Chapter 618: I Am Not Human
When he fell out of the crack in the iron plate, Luo Jinyou's world was only wind.
The gale tore at his clothing, blasted into his ears, his body plummeted wildly, and the Aberrant Species beside him had already separated, tilting and falling in another direction.
A gray, misty cloud layer, like a thin veil, was pulled away before his eyes, revealing the ground world below.
The vast, flat land illuminated by artificial lights, already dim under today's overcast sky, grew even darker as Tianmian City blocked the remaining white light; the world became extremely dim, and every household lit a lamp.
Those lights were not emitted by Runes; the bright lights were arranged neatly in grids or lines, and the silhouettes of skyscrapers rose from between the points, their glass curtain walls reflecting each other's glow.
There were no ruins, no Aberrant Species, no broken city walls or charred fields here.
Only an ordinary, intact city.
The kind that only appears in Old World history books......
Luo Jinyou was stunned.
His body was descending at a terrifying speed, yet everything before him felt as if he had fallen into a unique illusion.
Luo Jinyou's pupils contracted sharply; he withdrew his scattered gaze, curled his body in the air, adjusted his angle, and scanned the ground quickly with his extraordinary eyes.
The Aberrant Species he had heavily damaged lagged a fraction behind, but hadn't fallen far; Luo Jinyou didn't hesitate, stepped onto the nearby Cannon Barrel relay and lunged toward the Aberrant Species.
He and the Aberrant Species crashed hard onto the ground; even with the creature as a buffer, his vision went black, the massive impact left him dazed, his whole body screamed in pain, yet he had indeed fallen from the Floating City and survived.
His hand rested inside the fully concave corpse of the Aberrant Species, he turned over, facing upward.
His whole body ached, but he gasped heavily, frantically absorbing the mutation factor from the Aberrant Species' corpse to heal himself, then looked toward this world where the mutation factor was nearly nonexistent.
"Heh......"
He tugged at the corner of his mouth, roughly a smile.
In this world so clean it made one want to cry, Luo Jinyou felt a slight moisture before his eyes.
The mutation factor drifted in like dark green mist, thread by thread seeping into Luo Jinyou's wounds.
The broken bones slowly repaired beneath skin and flesh, itching and a deep, aching soreness, but Luo Jinyou had grown accustomed to it.
The Aberrant Species' rapid regeneration propelled him within the team to a level comparable to the Life Divine Oracle Xie Jingyan; as long as the mutation factor is sufficient, even severe injuries can be healed, though sometimes he must busy himself reassembling his shattered self back into human form.
He lay for about three or four minutes, tried to wiggle the fingers of his right hand; his left shoulder still throbed dullly, but the bone had settled back into place.
He propped himself up with his arms and sat, perched inside the concave chest cavity of the Aberrant Species, surrounded by a wrecked plaza.
"What is that thing!"
"Call the police quickly!"
"That thing isn't dead yet; a monster crawled out of it!"
People hiding in the mall witnessed Luo Jinyou sit up from the monster's body with their own eyes; this scene, no matter how you look at it, shouldn't happen in reality, but rather in a horror film.
Those who had originally gathered out of curiosity to film with their phones immediately stepped back, yet some still rushed forward heedless of death; the Security Team's voices were drowned in the cacophony, and they formed a trembling human wall with arms and bodies, pushing the crowd backward while shouting.
"Step back! Everyone step back! Don't crowd the doorway!"
Luo Jinyou, separated by the glass, watched it all; his body hadn't fully recovered, yet he could hear the commotion clearly on that side.
The eyes, whose pupils bore dark‑gold patterns deep within, calmly watched the panicked people; he lifted his arm, wiped his face, clearing the bloodstain from half his visage, revealing the youthful, weary countenance beneath.
Luo Jinyou knew he must have frightened them, but how could he show his harmlessness?
He didn't even dare approach those overly clean people, fearing his own mutation might entangle them.
Luo Jinyou had changed a lot.
Yang Yixie stood behind the glass wall, separated from Luo Jinyou by only a glass door and most of the plaza.
Although Yang Yixie had never seen the still‑young Luo Jinyou in the game with his own eyes, when he appeared bearing a Blood Bar and his name descending, Yang Yixie felt somewhat dazed.
A chaotic view can blur many things, but that first‑impression aura and the feeling it gives are hard to alter.
Luo Jinyou had matured greatly; even counting time, after two years he was still only sixteen.
Yet that seasoned, battle‑worn aura made him far from the frightened youngster he once was.
Yang Yixie watched Luo Jinyou, seated in the Aberrant Species' corpse, frozen there not knowing what to do, his eyes slightly darkened.
Some progress, but not much.
Luo Jinyou stared across at the crowd from afar, not knowing what to do.
He had followed Shen Zexi and others, dealing with all sorts of people.
Refugees, soldiers, bishops, merchants, the scavengers roaming the ruins' edges; he had even fought Aberrant Species for countless days and nights.
But this crowd was different; their clothes were too clean, their eyes pure terror, like a mirror reflecting everything on him that shouldn't belong in this world.
Luo Jinyou's very existence was a contamination of this world.
"I won't go over," he sensed those people were frightened, "Don't be afraid; I'll just sit here and stay still."
He hadn't realized that the image of him choosing to sit inside the monster's body was even more terrifying.
The Security Team leader, drenched in sweat, stood at the front, one hand blocking the crowd, the other gripping a radio, his eyes unblinking as they stared at the white‑haired youth sitting in the corpse outside.
His voice trembled, but mustering courage he asked, "You... are you human?"
The youth before him looked not old, yet bore an unnaturally white hair as if born with it, his eyes beast‑like.
If his entrance hadn't been so bizarre, he would have thought Luo Jinyou was just a child who liked role‑playing.
Luo Jinyou was silent for two seconds; this question might be the hardest for him to answer.
He looked down at his hand, then lifted his gaze.
"Strictly speaking, I'm not human..."
"But you can trust me; I will never harm you."
