Chapter 633: High-Risk Individuals List

~7 min read 1,305 words

Yang Yixie got a rough grasp of Night Travel, which took him about three days.

It wasn't that Night Travel's materials were overly complicated; mainly, those people were too simple-minded, which instead made him wonder if he had missed something, or perhaps the organization simply didn't need his extra attention.

Night Travel really isn't an ambitious organization.

Their core members numbered fewer than twenty, most of them ordinary people—teachers, couriers, and at most small business owners...

The "important people" they mentioned had no special status either—just their relatives, friends, or comrades who fought side by side in the game until the very end.

They couldn't even be called bad people; they were just a group of ordinary folks with nowhere else to turn, doing everything they could to drag the people they cared about out of the mire, even if their own hands were rubbed raw.

Night Travel showed no abnormality—so who exactly was the person monitoring them...

Yang Yixie rubbed his temples, glanced at the time, and got ready to get up and wash up.

Without realizing it, he'd pulled another all-nighter; he often gets so excited he forgets to sleep. Previously, Ying Duo's body was essentially an energy form he could abuse, but his own body still needs more care.

As usual, he made breakfast. When he came out, his mother Zhiruo was already leaning against the sofa with a soft cushion, her complexion much paler than usual. Seeing Yang Yixie emerge, she instinctively smiled at him.

"I'm fine; maybe I just didn't sleep well last night."

But when she stood up, she still leaned on and held the sofa's armrest, because even with effort her palms sank into the armrest; even so, the motion of rising was quite strenuous for her.

Yang Yixie didn't say much more; he simply walked over and reached out to feel his mother's forehead.

Not hot, not a fever, but it was unnaturally cold.

"To the hospital." Yang Yixie made a snap decision.

He said he felt like he'd missed something; his mother's body was already weak, so if the mutation factor spiked and caused environmental changes, it could very well affect her.

Zhiruo wanted to say it wasn't necessary, but Yang Yixie had already started looking for his medical insurance card and such, so she could only ask him to be gentle and not wake Yang Yichen.

Yang Yichen's work hours had actually become healthier, which reassured his mother, but he still often worked late and came home very late, and Zhiruo didn't want to disturb his rest.

Yang Yixie didn't think he could rely on Yang Yichen either; he immediately woke up next-door neighbor Bai Mu Yun, pretended to bump into them on the way out, and drove them to the hospital.

Bai Mu Yun was suddenly jolted awake by the message; he had originally wanted to scold Yang Yixie roundly, but upon seeing that Zhiruo had met with an accident, he could only swallow his morning grumpiness, reluctantly putting on his pajamas and pretending to go out to take out the trash, thus giving them a plausible reason to be taken to the hospital.

Even though it was still early, the hospital was crowded.

The news of the mutation factor's spread hadn't been announced by the authorities, because for ordinary people it actually wouldn't have much effect—at most dizziness—and reporting it might instead cause panic.

Faced with this situation, more people simply assumed it was due to the season change, leading to frequent colds.

Yang Yixie had Zhiruo sit in a chair in the waiting area, then he went to queue and register, accompanying her back and forth several times.

Zhiruo was scheduled for a series of routine checks—blood, heart rate, and mutation value.

The last item was added only recently by the authorities; the instrument for measuring mutation value, now that the Dome provides a stable source, has been rapidly rolled out in hospitals.

Fortunately, Zhiruo's mutation value had risen only to "2"; it was just because her body was relatively weak that the abnormality appeared more noticeable.

The doctor's advice was simply to rest well, not to be overly anxious or overthink, and to go out for walks to relax.

Yang Yixie had already started tallying how much holy water remained in his game backpack, planning to go back and make some food infused with holy water for Zhiruo to suppress the mutation.

Since they were already there, Yang Yixie simply asked the doctor to prescribe some mild tonics for his mother; price wasn't an issue, since he'd be handling payment and pickup, and he could keep it from her.

Yang Yixie had his mother sit in the waiting area for a while while he went to handle payment and pick up the medicine.

There were quite a few people in the waiting area; a health program was playing on the nearby TV, and Zhiruo watched it for a bit before her attention was drawn to someone on the phone nearby.

A woman with a canvas bag answered a call; her voice wasn't loud, but because she was only one seat away, Zhiruo could catch some fragmented snippets:

"... Hmm, I got my report, nothing serious... By the way, did you see yesterday's news? That is, the 'High-Risk Individuals List' compiled by the authorities."

"... They say those people from the game have started gradually entering our society—things like the Church, the Dome... and that some folks with questionable backgrounds are tagging along."

Zhiruo heard the commotion on the other end and slightly turned her ear.

It seemed the person on the other end had said something, and the woman with the canvas bag lowered her voice a bit.

"... No wonder, really—although I know the two worlds will soon be interacting, I've heard those people are pretty dangerous, after all they were fighting a war over there!"

"... But those who are allowed in should all have proper identification; the worry is that some might sneak across."

"... Didn't the authorities compile a list? I think the traits of those on it are pretty obvious."

She paused for a moment, as if listening to the response from the other end of the call.

"... Besides, there's no need to worry too much—I saw reports saying the authorities also have many powerful aberrant arts practitioners, all returned from that game, and they're quite capable... Anyway, it's not up to us to fret; we just need to live our own lives well."

After chatting a few more words with the person on the other end, she finally reluctantly hung up, and the woman stowed her phone and the report together back into her canvas bag.

Zhiruo, however, had her interest piqued by what the woman had just said.

"What is the 'High-Risk Individuals List'?"

She immediately pulled out her phone to search; it had apparently been released around eight p. m. the previous night, but because she felt unwell she had gone to bed early and hadn't noticed.

Surely whoever the authorities put on this list must be dangerous people—why would they let such individuals enter the city?

Zhiruo pressed her lips; she hadn't missed a single report about those matters these past few days, so she naturally knew what extraordinary abilities the people from that game possessed.

Ordinary people might be fine, but ability users couldn't possibly be stuck on the Floating City forever.

But...... isn't this pace a bit too fast? And why go to the trouble of creating such a list...

Zhiruo still opened the official list; at first glance she saw a conspicuously arrogant yet unusually quiet young man.

He looked only a few years older than her son; although he had a head of vivid red hair, his ink‑black eyes were as empty as a pool of dead water.
