The function of the Heavenly Court, the existence of the Heavenly Court, to them, are all where they are most concerned with their own interests; therefore, if war truly occurs, they will necessarily sacrifice themselves for the Heavenly Court, forgetting self.
For the Wasteland, the heavenly gods and earthly deities are the true core of its operation; the weight of authority lies precisely here.
Divine beings are among the Three Powers of the divine Dao, where the human destiny manifests; heaven and earth are eternal, humans endure within them, following the four seasons—thus it is so.
You see in this hall, the heavenly gods and earthly deities have long since returned to the Heavenly Court; what remains are merely divine beings.
Only when people think of change does someone like the Eastern King Duke arise, rashly attempting to disturb the existing order of heaven and earth, for under the Heavenly Court, all things move according to time, unchanging in their nature.
Otherwise, given his origins, if he were of the heavenly gods and earthly deities, he would long ago have accepted the Dao Ancestor's words, entered the Heavenly Court, and become a regional emperor.
Thus, look again within this hall—how many more can you befriend in the name of the Heavenly Court?
Ziwei remained silent for a long time before speaking.
There is no one in the hall.
Qi nodded, drank a cup of wine, then said: 'I previously said that the innate gods born under the Great Dao are different from you innate gods born under the Heavenly Dao.'
The difference lies in that you possess more humanity and less aspiration for the Dao compared to us; to oneself, this is a drawback.
However, for the beings of the Wasteland and for the Heavenly Court, this is your advantage.
If it were me, or Di Jun and Taiyi, Fuxi and Nüwa, faced with the opportunity to attain the Dao, what harm would there be in abandoning the Heavenly Court and the Wasteland?
But you are different; we, like the Heavenly Dao, see the myriad things undergo reincarnation, the lives of beings rise and fall like straw dogs, feeling that all things operate by their own principle, that all beings under heaven and earth are equal, with no need for excessive calculation.
But you possess an extra measure of compassion and pity; just as I may disdain Pingyi's current dissolute appearance, it cannot be denied that he is more merciful than I.
You are likewise, only you are more mature and steadfast than Pingyi, your resolve to seek the Dao stronger; you have found the path you wish to follow, whereas Pingyi has not.
If you harbor this compassion and pity, as you gaze upon the hall, could there be someone who, after we retreat, could join you in governing the Wasteland?
Ziwei fell into contemplation, his gaze continually sweeping the hall, then slowly focusing on Taiyi, and said: 'Many thanks for your instruction, Your Majesty Qi; I understand.'
Qi, seeing this, smiled and said:
This person I have long taken note of; among the innate gods born under the Heavenly Dao, his resolve to seek the Dao is firm, with few peers.
Moreover, he is similar to you, also possessing compassion and pity, often expounding the Dao at the foot of Kunlun Mountain, seeking only to liberate beings from the sea of suffering.
He bears great merit and great perseverance; go and acquaint yourself with him—perhaps you will gain something, and furthermore he presently faces adversity, which is exactly your opportunity to step forward.
Ziwei bowed and said: 'I understand, Your Majesty; such a marvelous person—how could I possibly miss him?'
Qi waved his hand, dismissing him; Ziwei complied readily and left.
Only after distancing himself from Qi and company did he sigh helplessly: 'I had thought that, while wandering the Wasteland, I had met a pearl lost in the sea, but I never expected that he had already caught the eyes of several Majesties.'
Now upon reflection, I realize my own shallowness, yet this is only natural; in heaven and earth, the affairs of the Wasteland—how could anything be hidden from the Heavenly Court?
Having said that, Ziwei gave a self‑mocking laugh, then went to see when his friend had fallen into the gaze of those Majesties.
On the other side, Taiyi, seeing Ziwei arrive, was not surprised; instead, he smiled and introduced him to those around:
Fellow Daoists, this is a good friend I made while wandering the Wasteland; his learning is profound, he knows astronomy above and geography below, his mastery of formations and divine abilities is unmatched—I am inferior to him.
Now that the Heavenly Court convenes, we can finally meet; we are in the midst of joy, and with a friend joining us, we should fill our cups.
After everyone drank the wine, they then turned their gaze to Ziwei, secretly shocked.
Taiyi is already among the most outstanding deities of Kunlun Mountain, usually held in high esteem, yet he never expected that this person could make him sigh in admiration.
Now that we have met, we naturally ought to cultivate a good relationship.
The Heavenly Court's conclave is seldom convened, and outsiders are usually restricted; to have the rare chance to attend such a grand gathering, one should move about frequently.
Ziwei did not expect Taiyi to introduce him in this way; he hurriedly said:
Taiyi Dao‑friend, you overpraise me; I merely have some modest skills, unworthy of such acclaim—you all are the true heroes among men.
