Chapter 1760: Mermaid Taming Guide 32

~7 min read 1,307 words

The night was deep and the dew heavy.

The headquarters base's sky-shielding protection blocked the moonlight; the surroundings were eerily silent, with not even a sound of wind.

Lin Juan stood at the edge of the rooftop railing of the No. 3 Research Building, his expression slightly dazed, with blood-soaked gauze that had just been applied to his wound scattered on the ground beside him.

The base had better medicine that could heal wounds, but Lin Juan had been unwilling to use it these past few days, as if he wanted to remember something by doing so.

In the evening he dodged all surgeries this month, under pressure handing them over to other researchers and the lead surgeon, and Edmond took the opportunity to criticize him again.

For a moment Lin Juan actually didn't understand what he was really looking for by coming back here.

But his subconscious told him that the headquarters was what he had been seeking for years—perhaps some meaningless truth, or perhaps lost fragments of memory.

After a long while, Lin Juan's wristwatch vibrated slightly; he lowered his eyes, pondered for a few moments, then dragged his weary body downstairs.

Edmond's private laboratory.

Xu Yi racked his brains but still couldn't figure out why the Mermaid Boss knew the layout of this place so well, and dared to come all the way here almost without avoiding surveillance.

And how did you just barge into the final boss's laboratory as soon as you arrived! Boss, speak frankly—are you planning to quit after this job?

"Keep up."

Jin Chen didn't know what the protagonist's uke was complaining about, and almost unimpeded entered the laboratory, turning on the light source.

Apart from Edmond, hardly anyone ever comes in here; the various devices and potions are dazzling, and cold air is constantly pumped in.

"Search the experiment reports and gather more." Jin Chen instructed, and in an instant went to search for experimental data from ten years ago.

"Okay!" Xu Yi simply focused on gathering data, hoping to finish the task quickly; this time he was determined to take You Zhuoran away no matter what.

Following the Boss, no problem!

The next second, the left and right rows of metal racks were moved aside, and after a booming sound a secret door appeared.

"Boom—, indicating a huge sound."

"Xu Yi: "……""

Jin Chen silently withdrew his hand, not expecting this thing to make such a noise.

That old thing certainly doesn't know how to make a secret door.

Xu Yi hoped it was just his hallucination, "The commotion just now……shouldn't be too big, right?"

Jin Chen was rather impatient, "Whatever, you stand guard outside."

Xu Yi nodded, feeling that the Boss's impatience was meant to hide his guilt, but he didn't dare point it out.

It was obvious that everything inside was Edmond's secrets.

Jin Chen couldn't be bothered to examine details; anything related to ten years ago he just shoved into his space for Ling Gun Gun to digest and sort out.

From the outside it didn't look like gathering data; it looked more like a robbery.

Xu Yi grew more alarmed the more he looked, taking a deep breath.

He simply stopped looking.

Then Xu Yi saw something else.

"Mom! There are two shadows outside the window!"

"Xu Yi is in there again?" Lin Juan's steps halted; he wasn't too surprised to see You Zhuoran.

"You Zhuoran: "…No.""

"Lin Juan: "Move aside.""

"No." You Zhuoran said stubbornly, "There's no one inside."

"I placed a tracker on Jin Chen."

"You Zhuoran: "……" Your speed is still quite fast!"

After Jin Chen finished sweeping through, he saw Xu Yi shivering behind a rack, looking up in confusion.

"Is there a ghost here?"

"This world shouldn't have such a setting, right?"

Xu Yi didn't dare look back, pointing behind himself.

Jin Chen happened to see the laboratory's Main Gate open.

The four of them stared at each other.

"Oh… leak." Xu Yi closed his eyes completely.

"Would be better if it were a ghost."

A ripple seemed to pass through Jin Chen's eyes; he showed no embarrassment at being caught red-handed, leisurely leaning against the rack and saying, "Doctor Lin, you're also here for a stroll?"

Lin Juan raised his brows, also looking at the secret door behind Jin Chen that was still open, and said hoarsely, "You shouldn't be here."

Jin Chen snorted coldly, his tone edged.

"What, Doctor Lin wants to stab me again to give me a lesson?"

Lin Juan's breath caught, a layer of sorrow filling his eyes.

The other two people hearing this had varied expressions.

Xu Yi looked back and forth between them, surprised, not understanding how they had fallen out.

You Zhuoran wanted to speak but held back, thinking of how Lin Juan had shoved Jin Chen into the sea and then stabbed him without hesitation.

After a few seconds of silence, Lin Juan spoke in a clear, cold voice tinged with hoarseness: "This place isn't safe; let's go outside to talk."

Perhaps to confirm Lin Juan's words, as soon as the four reached the door they heard the Patrol Team's footsteps.

"Run!" You Zhuoran decided decisively, "The Patrol Team isn't under my command; they must have discovered something."

But Edmond's laboratory is on the top floor, with only one side of the stairs also occupied by the Patrol Team, so they could only run toward the Rooftop.

That way, being chased would be like catching a turtle in a jar.

Jin Chen climbed onto the Rooftop's peak, looking down and considering the possibility of jumping straight down.

Lin Juan's eyebrows twitched, his body reacted faster than his mind, and he grabbed Jin Chen's hand directly, "What are you doing!"

Afterwards Lin Juan visibly stiffened, wanting to let go casually, but instead Jin Chen grabbed his shoulder and suddenly pressed him against the railing.

"Doctor Lin, are you overstepping a bit?"

Jin Chen leaned over him and asked, his expression indifferent yet intriguing.

The familiar scent once again wrapped around him, and the various warm memories from Mermaid City almost instantly flooded back, occupying everything.

Lin Juan's shoulders and neck twitched slightly; he tightly gripped the cold railing behind him, restraining the urge to embrace.

"It's dangerous."

No matter how he tried to stay calm with reason, when the words left his mouth, the almost off-key tone still revealed Lin Juan's emotional fluctuations and sorrow.

Jin Chen's brows slightly furrowed, his averted gaze softened a bit, no longer as icy as before.

But Lin Juan didn't see it.

"Not all dangers can harm me." Jin Chen stood up, stepped back a few steps, his lips curling in an ambiguous smile, "Besides, one needs favorable timing, advantageous location, and harmonious people."

Lin Juan seemed frozen by those words, head bowed like someone who made a mistake, and he no longer dared to look at Jin Chen's eyes.

Xu Yi at the Rooftop entrance simply didn't understand what was meant; instead, he was grabbed by You Zhuoran and given a good scolding.

He nodded with a bitter smile, saying he definitely wouldn't do it next time, then suddenly noticed the Patrol Team had already left, "We can go now!"

As soon as his words fell, Jin Chen left like a gust of wind, his steps swift.

He looked furious.

Why not explain? Why not say sweet words to coax?

Jin Chen wondered, "Am I really some kind of hard-to-please fish!"

After a moment, You Zhuoran asked Lin Juan, "Why didn't you tell him? Your injuries aren't healed yet, are they?"

Lin Juan: "……No need."

Originally we weren't on the same path.

Jin Chen felt disheartened; after rescuing the little red fish, he would leave this place and never return.

Lin Juan's eyes grew slightly dim, his pupils filled with an unfathomable, rich sorrow.
