Chapter 2183: You Are My Only Color 18

~7 min read 1,297 words

Wen Jin only belatedly realized, after mechanically finishing his last work, that Jin Chen had just come in.

The conversation surfaced in his mind, and he felt inexplicably anxious.

Jin Chen… will he leave here?

Wen Jin suddenly stood up, but his vision went dark all at once.

His pupils dilated like a needle prick, bloodshot threads spreading across his eyeballs.

He staggered and grabbed the edge of the desk.

"Sir!" the assistant rushed in to support him, but his flung hand hit the wall lamp switch.

In the suddenly darkened room, Wen Jin held the desk edge for a while, his eyeballs feeling like they were on fire, before realizing he had entered temporary blindness again.

"Xiao Chen… Xiao Chen?" Wen Jin asked.

The assistant froze for a moment, "... Young Master Jin seems to have just left the main residence."

After all, the Zhuang Yuan is so large, he truly didn't know where Jin Chen had gone for a moment.

Wen Jin's anxiety instantly peaked, to the point he couldn't tell whether nervousness or anger was stronger.

He gripped the desk tightly, his bloodshot eyes somewhat unfocused, his voice tinged with rare panic: "Check his location!"

The assistant hesitated at the door: "Sir, your eyes……"

"Go now."

Wen Jin's temples throbbed; in the darkness he seemed to see Jin Chen standing at the doorway again, the richest pigment blooming at his fingertips, like the sole color dripping into his black-and-white world.

But this time, even that hint of color vanished.

The study fell into dead silence, only the wall clock's second hand ticking out a palpitation-inducing rhythm beside his ear.

Wen Jin held the desk edge, his fingertips gouging deep grooves into the wood grain.

"Did he really leave?" Wen Jin muttered, his palm groping the desktop and knocking over the desk lamp.

The sound of the glass cover shattering silenced him for a few seconds, recalling how Jin Chen had broken that paint bottle in the studio last night, then boastfully claimed he was startled and needed to work overtime to fix it.

The servant who rushed forward tried to support him, but was shoved away, then scolded out, and he ordered the bodyguards to come in.

When Wen Jin fell into blindness, he deemed himself pathetic and would not allow any unsafe person near him.

He staggered toward the door, his knee hitting the swivel chair, and he fell heavily to the ground.

Habitually feeling his way up, his fingertips touched the scattered documents on the carpet, inevitably recalling that Jin Chen had sat here a few days ago, accompanying him as he reviewed documents into the night.

Weak light filtered through the floor-to-ceiling window at the end of the hallway, but Wen Jin could only see a blur of gray.

"Mr. Wen!" the medical team's voice came from the stairs, but Wen Jin ignored it.

He continued feeling his way forward, and the instant his fingertips touched the door handle, he suddenly heard familiar footsteps.

"Wen Jin?" Jin Chen's voice carried helplessness and heartache, his footsteps drawing nearer.

Wen Jin froze in place, his breathing quickening.

He felt a warm palm cover his eyes, smelling of antiseptic.

Wen Jin fiercely grabbed Jin Chen's hand, "You…"

"I didn't leave; I just went to get medicine from your team." Jin Chen sighed, his other arm wrapping around his waist, "You won't listen to me—how can your eyes get better?"

Who would have thought that just as he brought the medicine back, he saw the assistant hastily leading people to search the Zhuang Yuan.

Wen Jin suddenly turned, pulling Jin Chen tightly into his embrace.

He couldn't see Jin Chen's expression, but he could feel his heartbeat through the shirt, gradually syncing with his own chaotic, startled pulse.

"I thought you had left."

Wen Jin's voice trembled slightly, his fingertips probing Jin Chen's back, as if confirming this wasn't an illusion.

Jin Chen lowered his head to hold him, his breath brushing his ear: "If I truly wanted to leave, I wouldn't still be here waiting for you to send people to search."

He gently pried Wen Jin's hand open, then scooped him up in a horizontal hold, "Let's go back to the room to check your eyes."

——

"Mr. Wen, we've seen this condition before—it's temporary blindness caused by overfatigue."

The attending doctor pushed up his glasses, looking at Jin Chen standing by the bed: "You must remind him to take his medicine on time."

Jin Chen nodded, taking the medicine bag the doctor handed over.

His fingertips touched the cool glass bottle; he lowered his eyes to read the label carefully and noted it down.

"Based on past experience, this will likely last about half a month."

The doctor packed up his equipment, adding, "Remember to let him rest more."

After the doctors left, the room fell into brief silence.

Wen Jin sat on the bed edge, his fingers unconsciously rubbing the corner of the blanket, trying to catch Jin Chen's scent from the air.

But the room was so quiet it seemed only his own breathing remained.

"Jin Chen?" he called out tentatively, his voice sounding abrupt in the empty room.

No response.

Wen Jin's heart sank sharply, his fingers clutching the sheet.

He raised his voice again and shouted: "Jin Chen?"

His tone carried obvious anxiety and unease.

Still no response.

Wen Jin's breathing quickened, his throat tightened, as if something were blocking it.

That familiar feeling of helplessness surged again, like a heavy black fog pressing down, making it hard for him to breathe.

Just then, warm fingers suddenly gripped his palm.

Wen Jin's body stiffened for an instant, then relaxed, his hand gripping back tightly, as if clutching the sole lifeline.

"Why aren't you speaking?" he asked in a low voice, somewhat angry, his grip making Jin Chen's hand ache slightly.

Jin Chen let out a soft hum, his tone tinged with teasing and dissatisfaction: "Don't you find me annoying?"

Wen Jin pressed his lips together, his throat feeling as if a stone were lodged in it.

"Has the doctor left?" he asked in a low voice, his tone tinged with guilt.

"He's gone."

Jin Chen gently tugged his hand, as if trying to break free.

Wen Jin, however, gripped tighter, as if afraid he might suddenly disappear.

"Don't go." he said in a low voice, with an almost imperceptible plea. "... I can't see now, so I can't coax you."

The next second, Jin Chen's arms wrapped around his shoulders, gently pulling him into an embrace.

Wen Jin's body trembled slightly, like a taut string finally relaxing.

He leaned against Jin Chen's chest, listening to that steady, powerful heartbeat, as if the whole world had fallen silent.

"I'm not annoyed by you." he said in a low voice, his voice muffled against Jin Chen's clothing, "I'm just... too anxious."

Finally he got the chance to pull Wen Zhong off his horse, and he really didn't dare to let this opportunity slip away easily.

Jin Chen merely stroked his back lightly, as if soothing a startled cat.

Wen Jin's heart gradually calmed, his fingers unconsciously rubbing Jin Chen's back, over and over.

"Don't ignore me, Xiao Chen." he said in a low voice, "When I can't see, all I can hear is your voice."

Jin Chen immediately lowered his head, lightly kissing his forehead, "All right, I'll apply some medicine for you."

Jin Chen twisted open the glass bottle of eye drops, the cotton swab dipped in coolness brushing over Wen Jin's trembling eyelashes.

"From now on, you're not allowed to complain that I meddle too much."

Wen Jin, still uneasy, let out a soft sigh, "Fine, a bit more meddling is good."
