Chapter 3129: My Wife and I Enact Daily Life 14
Their spiritual power intertwined in the air, seven-colored flowing light and frost-white vigorous energy weaving into a net that shot toward the opposing Duan Shan. The corpse soul let out a sharp hiss, its black corpse qi colliding with the spiritual power.
The air surge rolled, flying sand and rocks in the courtyard. The new disciples were shaken sideways, hastily dropping to the ground to dodge.
Jin Chen and Chenshu each stepped back a few paces, steadied their stances, and their faces grew somewhat solemn.
This corpse soul's cultivation was far deeper than they had imagined.
Its soul power seemed inexhaustible, at least a thousand years of cultivation. With their current strength in this small world, a head‑on clash was no match. Even using ordinary methods, fighting until dawn might not expel the corpse soul from within Duan Shan, and would instead injure Duan Shan's mortal body. But recklessly revealing origin spiritual power would surely arouse suspicion.
It must be settled quietly. Jin Chen and Chenshu thought the same.
But Chenshu moved faster, turning and slapping a palm onto Jin Chen's shoulder, shoving him back. Once Jin Chen steadied himself, he saw Chenshu already turned and grabbed the corpse soul's arm.
The corpse soul let out a frightened shriek, clearly unwilling to enter its own illusion, for that was where its deepest obsession lay; once intruded, it would be exposing its weakness to the enemy. But Chenshu's power was too great, and it could not break free.
A black vortex opened in the air, swallowing both Chenshu and the corpse soul together.
"Chenshu!!"
Jin Chen's face changed instantly; seeing the vortex rapidly shrinking, about to close.
He knew that was the corpse soul's illusion, and he knew how dangerous it would be for Chenshu, at his current strength, to face that thousand‑year corpse soul alone. Without time to think, his body lunged forward, his hands thrust into the shrinking vortex's crack, trying to tear it open again. Spiritual power surged madly from his palms, opposing the vortex's repelling force. His Dharma robe snapped in the air blast, his hair flying wildly in the wind.
But with a cultivator's physique, forcibly tearing the illusion's rift was beyond what he could endure.
"We're here!" a united shout came from behind.
Shen Guiyan's sword qi slashed out, forcibly cleaving an opening in the vortex; Ye XiaoMan quickly drew a formation on the ground, slowing the vortex's contraction; Qian Duoduo tossed a stack of talismans, pasting them around the crack to reinforce it… Finally, Jin Chen forcibly split the vortex open, shouting, "Go!"
The inner disciples pooled their strength, and just before the vortex closed, they all rushed in together, the vortex booming shut behind them.
The guard teams stood in place, staring at the empty courtyard; the new disciples climbed up from the ground, looking around blankly, and discovered that all their senior brothers and sisters had vanished.
"Hurry, hurry and report to the Sect Leader!" the guard captain finally reacted, turning to sprint toward the main peak.
"No need." a gentle voice sounded behind him.
The guard captain turned his head and saw only the Lofty Heavens Immortal Venerable standing at the gate of the Moon Cultivation Institute, with the Sword Peak Peak Master Gu QingShang behind him.
The Lofty Heavens Immortal Venerable strolled into the courtyard, glanced at the residual formation marks on the ground, then nodded and said, "That too is their fortune. That corpse soul… is not simple at all."
His tone carried a hint of deep meaning, yet his expression was completely relaxed, showing no worry at all.
The guard captain breathed a sigh of relief, about to ask what to do next, when the Lofty Heavens Immortal Venerable spoke again, "By the way, I heard there's a bet between those two junior disciples—what exactly is it? Tell the sect in detail."
Guard captain: "…Oh dear."
——
Jin Chen opened his eyes to see gray‑tiled eaves and half a patch of clear blue sky. Stalls lined both sides of the street; in the distance children chased and played, their laughter ringing clear.
Had he not known he was in an illusion, Jin Chen would almost have believed he'd truly crossed over to an ordinary mortal town, sensing no trace of spiritual or corpse aura.
He casually asked a vegetable‑selling old man for directions; when he asked where he was, the old man said Yunzhong Town. He then asked what big event was happening in town today; the old man shifted his vegetable basket onto his shoulder, jerked his chin toward the street's end, and said, "The Chu family is marrying off a daughter today—look, those lanterns and banners over there, the bride is the Chu family's Huan Niang."
The Chu family marries off a daughter. They are getting married.
"Could this be the illusion's focal point…?" Jin Chen muttered to himself. If so, that would also be the obsession of the corpse soul controlling the illusion. To break the illusion, one must find the core of that obsession.
But he had no mind to worry about obsessions or not; he only wanted to find Chenshu quickly. Sigh, truly a source of anxiety for him.
Jin Chen asked a passerby for the Chu family's location, then hurried over.
The Chu family manor was easy to spot—the most imposing residence on the street, its gate hung with lanterns and banners, red silk fluttering, guests coming and going, a festive atmosphere.
Jin Chen slipped in among the guests; the doorman saw his unfamiliar face, gave him a second look, but Jin Chen's countenance didn't look like a freeloader, so the doorman merely nodded, smiled, and stepped aside to let him in.
Having entered openly, Jin Chen then sneaked around to the back courtyard, dodging servants and guests all the way, jumped down from the wall, and as he landed he steadied himself by holding the flowerpot beside the wall, so it wouldn't fall and make a noise.
The back courtyard was quieter than the front; Jin Chen turned a corner and suddenly heard someone speaking.
He poked his head out and saw a maid‑like young lady talking to a person wearing a bright red wedding robe.
"Son‑in‑law, the young lady's side is ready; the auspicious time is approaching—please get ready."
That person had his back to Jin Chen, so his face was unseen, but that silhouette… was wrong.
Jin Chen's eyes widened in shock—why was his wife dressed as a groom standing here?!
The maid bowed, turned and left; the one in groom's attire, Chenshu, turned around, seeming to ponder something.
Jin Chen stepped out from behind the pillar, strode up angrily, and confronted him: "What are you doing? How did you become the groom?!"
Chenshu looked at him, his eyes showing a hint of bewilderment and also a dazed astonishment.
He looked Jin Chen up and down, then hesitated and said, "Sir, may I ask who you are…?"
Jin Chen froze, "…You don't recognize me?"
Chenshu frowned slightly, as if trying to recall something, but ultimately shook his head and said, "I seem never to have met this sir. May I ask your esteemed name? Are you here to attend the Chu family's wedding banquet?"
This illusion actually wiped Chenshu's memory—who allowed that?!
Jin Chen gritted his teeth in anger, stared into Chenshu's eyes, and asked word by word, "Who are you going to marry?"
Chenshu, feeling a bit embarrassed under his gaze, turned his head slightly, as if daydreaming about something wonderful, and said, "Naturally, Huan Niang."
"Although Huan Niang and I are betrothed by parental order, I've just arrived in Yunzhong Town and haven't yet seen her… but I believe Huan Niang must be exceedingly beautiful and excellent."
Jin Chen fell silent for a moment; his emotional management peaked at this instant, and he murmured, "…Is that so?"
Just who is this Huan Niang? That corpse soul must be some lonely ghost who's spent a thousand years alone, its obsession being marriage—hence this illusion.
Chenshu, what a poor devil.
