Chapter 3237: Saving the Loser Bai Ze Love Story 39
A bombing sound suddenly came from outside the building; even the top floor could feel it swaying, on the verge of collapse.
Bai Ze glanced warily at the floor-to-ceiling window, quickly walked over, stepped past obstacles and looked outside, his pupils slightly contracting.
In the distance, a huge gap was blasted in the outer wall of Mamen Institute, thick smoke billowed up, and the firelight was especially glaring against the twilight sky.
Further away, rows of armed off-road vehicles advanced along the road, their bodies sprayed with the insignia of Region Ten.
Bai Ze's gaze swept over the rubble and landed on the leading person.
At the base's outskirts, Selina, who had just left the top floor, jumped down from the top of an armored vehicle in combat gear, her red curls blown back by the wind; she held a machine gun with one hand, pulled a cigarette from her pocket with the other, clenched it in her mouth, and lifted her chin toward the interior of the base from afar.
Behind her stood a fully organized armed force, while the Mamen Institute assassins before her seemed, in her eyes, no different from weeds in a field.
Selina took a drag of her cigarette, raised the machine gun, turned and sprayed fire toward the Mamen Institute's main gate; muzzle flames shot out, forcing the few assassins trying to make a last stand to retreat repeatedly.
Explosion sounds kept coming from afar; buildings at the base's edge collapsed one after another, vibrations traveled from the ground up to the upper floors, and window glass hummed.
Chenshu walked up behind him, completely lacking any tension about joining the dangerous battle, glanced out the window, and said relaxedly: "Oh right, I promised Selina I'd help him blow up Mamen Institute."
Chenshu patted Bai Ze's shoulder, meaning to watch the fun without caring about the scale.
"Think about what you did in Region Four; if you want Selina to calm down, you'd better cooperate."
"A hot-tempered stepmother is hard to deal with."
Bai Ze fell silent for a few seconds, then nodded solemnly.
He didn't waste more time, turned and strode out; as he left, he bent over and grabbed the back of the Dean's corpse, half-dragging it outward. The corpse slid across the floor, making an unpleasant scraping sound.
Chenshu watched his retreating back, feeling relieved, hands in pockets, followed him out at a leisurely pace.
Bai Ze appeared in the first-floor lobby dragging the Dean's corpse; Mamen Institute assassins were still organizing a counterattack, they saw Bai Ze, first stunned, then their faces lit up with delight.
Although this group had never really welcomed Bai Ze, had excluded him, tripped him up, and even last year in Region Thirteen followed the Dean's orders to act against him, what of it?
Bai Ze was ultimately someone the Dean personally cultivated; at this life-or-death juncture, could he possibly stand on anyone else's side?
One assassin even shouted at the top of his lungs, "Bai Ze! You came just in time! Quick…"
Before he could finish, his voice choked with fear in his throat.
Because he saw that the corpse Bai Ze was dragging, although beaten beyond recognition, still had that build and those clothes… it was the Dean!
Bai Ze flung the Dean's corpse to his feet; the body rolled twice on the ground, ending face up, its face turned toward all the Mamen Institute people.
The assassin who had just been shouting: "……"
"Bai Ze! You're a traitor!"
Bai Ze charged toward that group.
The Mamen Institute assassins, having followed the Dean these years, had hardly received any proper training, relying mostly on underhanded tactics—a major reason Bai Ze chose to leave.
Meanwhile, the Dean's mind had long been wholly on researching the X potion, conducting experiment after experiment, with losses year after year; to raise money he looted everywhere, but these people under him had grown rusty from his patronage, their reactions and skills nowhere near what they once were. Bai Ze passed through them, encountering hardly any notable resistance.
Chenshu followed behind Bai Ze, swaying leisurely downstairs, detouring around the fiercest fighting.
Occasionally a clueless assassin would fixate on him; he would politely smile at them, then walk away with a smile, turning his head.
The firepower Selina brought was truly overwhelming; she seemed to have been holding in a foul breath, which had built up until now and poured all onto Mamen Institute.
Coincidentally, Chenshu had already released the news of Mamen Institute being besieged before the battle started. Various forces in Region Nine that had long been oppressed by Mamen Institute heard the news and almost without hesitation joined the melee.
Whether looting amid the fire or taking revenge, it was basically beating a drowning dog; anyone who didn't come was a fool.
In just half a day, Mamen Institute, which had once run rampant in Region Nine, was breached; the last few buildings burned, outer walls peeled off, and the ground was littered with rubble and shell casings.
The bombs Selina brought almost blew this place to smithereens; the air reeked of gunpowder and burntness.
At dusk, even the roof of the final building caught fire; the thick smoke of the blaze could not hide the heavy fire‑clouds on the horizon, spreading in vast sheets, orange‑red and dark‑red overlapping, casting the whole sky as if it too were ablaze.
Selina tossed her machine gun to the ground, squatted beside the rubble to finish half a cigarette, then stood, took a few steps to Bai Ze, hooked his shoulder and pressed down.
"Come on, come on." Her tone was like picking cabbage at a street stall.
"That day I didn't get my fix; let this old lady see what you're really capable of, so our Ai Li Nuo can like you that much!"
Bai Ze was jerked by her into a stumble; just as he steadied himself, he saw Selina's fist already coming his way.
He instinctively sidestepped to dodge; Selina closed the distance and threw a backhand blow, the impact of the two punches numbing Bai Ze's forearm, only then realizing that when she had fought him in the private booth in Region Four earlier… she had indeed been pulling her punches.
His parents had indeed died in the car accident arranged by Selina, but Selina was not his enemy; that was the only way they could escape the Dean's control, the last freedom they won for themselves before being turned completely into puppets.
Thinking of this, Bai Ze's tense shoulder‑back muscles suddenly loosened, his guard hesitating a fraction; Selina didn't let this opening pass, threw a punch, Bai Ze hastily raised his arm to block, and was shaken back two steps by her.
Before those complicated emotions in his heart could be digested, Selina's next punch came already, merciless; Bai Ze was chased and struck by her for over ten minutes, panting, sweat covering his forehead.
Finally Selina threw a punch that stopped two inches in front of Bai Ze, holding back; she turned her palm and slapped his shoulder.
"If I keep going, Ai Li Nuo will feel bad again." She said, "Scram, kid."
Bai Ze was drenched in sweat, a sorry sight, yet that heavy feeling in his chest inexplicably lightened considerably.
Chenshu stood nearby smiling, snapped a photo of the horizon's fire‑clouds, then turned and took a selfie of Bai Ze and Selina, opened Jin Chen's chat window and hit send.
"Done!"
Jin Chen Manor.
Yi Qi sat on the living‑room sofa, eyes unblinking on Jin Chen's phone screen; the worry that had hung over him all day finally eased a little.
He stared at the screen for a while, made sure there were no bloodstains, then muttered softly, "Why did Selina strike so hard… hope she didn't cause any internal injury."
Jin Chen practically wanted to applaud; truly, filial piety breeds strength.
He snatched the phone back from Yi Qi's hands, "Give it back."
"You and Bai Ze haven't reconciled; don't interfere with my wife chatting with me."
Yi Qi: "……" So annoying!
