Chapter 406: Handsome Overseer
When the bright moon hung high, Jin Chen faintly sensed a trace of power beyond this world appearing.
He rose warily and lifted the tent flap.
The night-watch eunuch immediately asked if something was wrong.
"It's fine, you may go rest." Jin Chen's expression remained blank.
The feeling just now vanished instantly, like an illusion, yet he could be certain that the person possessing system consciousness was definitely inside the camp.
After the night-watch eunuch left, Jin Chen turned to look at his lover still asleep on the bed, and cast a strand of his Spiritual Power at the head of the bed.
Unless someone with greater Spiritual Power appears, or Xuanche himself comes out, no one can enter the tent tonight.
Having done everything, he turned and vanished into the night.
Jin Chen appeared at a place following that faint sensation just now.
Looking around, it turned out to be Xuan Changyou's tent quarters again.
He hid in the shadows, growing more certain of his suspicion, even regretting having let him go so easily during the day.
A flash of bloodthirsty killing intent passed through his peach-blossom eyes; Jin Chen avoided the night-watch and entered Xuan Changyou's tent.
Xuan Changyou lay on the bed resting, eyes tightly shut, his sleeping face extremely uneasy.
He raised his fingertip and probed with Spiritual Power.
After a moment, a puzzled expression appeared on his face.
Xuan Changyou's body lacked that trace of power—why?
Again, the same.
Every time I start to suspect him, I can never find evidence.
Jin Chen tilted his head slightly, brows furrowed, handsome face tense; the other hand behind his back lifted, and he swiftly cast a spell, sending it into Xuan Changyou's body.
Still, there was no problem at all.
Damn it, this person is too weird.
Jin Chen clicked his tongue in displeasure, quite annoyed,
or perhaps just kill him once and for all.
As he pondered, his peripheral vision caught the table beside Xuan Changyou's bed.
Two meals were laid out there, presumably brought by attendants.
Jin Chen suddenly recalled seeing Xuan Changyou earlier that day, his pitiful, miserable appearance, pleading that he was exhausted and hungry, only wanting to return to camp to eat.
He hadn't fainted, so why, upon returning, did he not eat?
This doubt eased Jin Chen's furrowed brows, and his mind caught all the previously strange points.
The reason I suspect Xuan Changyou is that he is too fragmented; his actions could not possibly be the work of a single soul.
Two souls!
Jin Chen's eyes glimmered; if there were two souls, everything would make sense.
Each time I and my wife try to catch Xuan Changyou's weakness, the one who appears is the real him, while the one committing those series of acts is another soul.
That is, the true possessor of the strange system power.
Thinking of this, Jin Chen took from the System Space the puppet he had once collected and never used again.
A black shadow instantly appeared before Jin Chen, transforming, per his request, into a terrifying assassin's guise.
He slightly lifted his chin toward Xuan Changyou on the bed.
The puppet immediately lunged toward the bedside.
Jin Chen hid in the darkness, casting a barrier inside the tent and observing everything.
"Ah——"
Xuan Changyou was shaken awake by the bed's movement, turned his head, and saw a burly man standing beside him, the raised blade almost stabbing his face.
He shouted, scrambling and crawling into the blanket, as if that could give him a sense of safety.
"Huh……
The puppet began to move, holding back no strength, merely needing to force the other soul out.
Punch after punch, Xuan Changyou's cries grew louder and more shrill, yet no one outside the tent could hear.
Damn it, even like this the other soul still won't come out.
Jin Chen hid behind, utterly bewildered.
Doesn't he fear his flesh being destroyed?
"Help……
Xuan Changyou had completely lost the strength to shout, feeling he would die here today.
His blood‑stained fingers could not grip the ground ahead; after a final struggle, blood trickled from the corner of his mouth and he fainted.
Jin Chen: "……
He looked at the innocent‑standing puppet and helplessly covered his forehead.
Forget it, what does a puppet know about pulling punches?
Jin Chen walked over, took the knife from the puppet's hand, and used the tip to lift Xuan Changyou's waistband—where a jade bead should have been placed, now empty.
He drew the jade bead from his bosom and examined it closely.
Suddenly, a loud boom came from outside the tent.
That strange power appeared again, not far from the tent.
Jin Chen lowered his head to glance at the fainted Xuan Changyou.
Soul fleeing?
He had no time to think further; his heart was set on quickly seizing the person with the bizarre system to avenge his wife.
The puppet lost consciousness after Jin Chen left, standing upright with its head bowed.
A few seconds later, Jin Changyou's fingertip twitched.
Chasing out of the tent, Jin Chen followed that force to the drill ground where people were selected during the day.
His nostrils flared as he slowed his pursuit.
How could there be such a strong smell of blood.
Only upon approaching did he see that the ground was littered with the corpses of guards whose vital souls had been sucked out and whose bodies had been dismembered.
Just then, a torch flared up nearby, and suddenly a series of hurried footsteps echoed.
Jin Chen looked over and saw it was the group of soldiers from earlier that day.
Here we go again.
He rolled his eyes, originally intending to leave, but suddenly thought of a method, so he simply stood there holding his sword, expression calm as he waited for them to approach.
Since they want to play tricks, let's see whose tricks are deeper.
Third Prince, Your Highness! It's you again!
General Liu's voice was already tinged with anger: "You dare say again that these soldiers turned into monsters?"
Jin Chen: "Right, who knows? It wasn't me who killed them."
Your Highness!
General Liu suddenly roared, "Do you know that those you killed are the pillars of my Jin Kingdom? Even as a prince, you cannot wantonly slaughter soldiers! How can the millions of soldiers of my Jin Kingdom bear this?"
Jin Chen frowned and pulled at his ear.
What are you yelling about? I already said it wasn't this palace that did it!
Because Jin Chen was so self-righteous, General Liu nearly fainted from anger and declared he would go report to His Majesty.
Jin Chen thought, "What's the rush? There's still an actor who hasn't taken the stage."
As he had expected, Jin Changyou, who should have already passed out unconscious, limped over with the support of a eunuch.
Fifth Prince! What's wrong with you?
General Liu and the other soldiers were frightened by his blood-soaked appearance.
Third Imperial Brother... why did you send someone to kill me?
Jin Changyou's voice was weak, as if he had suffered a great blow.
But Jin Chen knew that the one now controlling the body was a soul possessing a strange power.
He could even see the mockery in the other's eyes.
Interesting.
Jin Chen retrieved the puppet from the tent and asked suspiciously, "Are you sick? Your tent is hundreds of thousands of miles away—who sent someone to kill you? Where's the evidence?"
The evidence... is right in my tent; he's standing there.
Jin Changyou answered, seeming afraid as he leaned toward General Liu.
I can give up the position of crown prince... please, Imperial Brother, spare me—I don't want to become like the eldest imperial brother.
Third Prince, you're really going too far; your humble servant thinks you should still go see His Majesty.
General Liu wanted to take Jin Chen to Emperor Qian Yong.
This seat sees who dares.
A clear, cold, and soft voice came from not far away.
