Chapter 258: A Car Approaches the Small Courtyard in the Darkness
Inside the car, Sheng Yu was as steady as Mount Tai, his black eyes fixed on those motorcades, his curled lips carrying a cold, biting chill.
They finally couldn't hold back anymore.
At the same time, more and more cars surrounded them, their target aimed directly at the car Shen Yijing was sitting in.
Chu Xin held a gun in one hand and gripped Shen Yijing's arm tightly with the other; Sheng Yu had just shot her in the knee, and the wound was still bleeding, the smell of blood inside the car thick and nauseating.
Hearing the commotion outside, the overwhelming roar of engines and the sound of gunfire made Shen Yijing's eyes light up, and she eagerly scrambled up from her seat.
Had he come to save her?
He would only appear in Fengcheng if he were worried about her, afraid that something might happen to her.
She crawled to the car window, clutching the door with both hands, peering out expectantly; the night was deep and dark, and while she could see countless headlights, she could not see who exactly was in the approaching cars.
But her intuition told her that it was him!
Just as she wanted to see more clearly, she was grabbed by Chu Xin and thrown back onto the seat, "Behave yourself!"
Shen Yijing gritted her teeth, but forced herself to calm down; he would definitely find a way to save her, she just needed to wait patiently.
The focus of those cars was entirely on the vehicle Shen Yijing was in.
More and more firepower was concentrated on that car; Situ pressed his lips into a thin line, his expression exceptionally cold and grim, yet he gripped the steering wheel tightly, unable to act rashly without Sheng Yu's orders.
A continuous stream of bullets fired at the middle car; one bullet struck a tire, and the car instantly veered off its original path, swerving sharply on the road.
Shen Yijing took the opportunity to break free from Chu Xin's grip.
But the moment the car lost control, her body, already weak from excessive blood loss, slammed into the car door, her head hitting the door handle hard, and her vision went black as she lost consciousness.
And that car also stopped on the road, instantly becoming a target.
Amidst the hail of bullets, in the dark of night, killers wove through the air, closing in on that car.
Sheng Yu narrowed his eyes slightly, a sharp glint appearing in their depths; this did not look like a rescue.
It looked like a silencing.
For a matter this important, the person behind the scenes must have come in person.
"Encircle them."
The man said these two words in a calm voice.
Almost at the same time, Situ grabbed the frequency-synced walkie-talkie to relay Sheng Yu's order and drew his pistol, about to push open the car door, but reason returned in an instant, making him realize where his duty lay.
He clenched his fists, but in the next second, Sheng Yu's cold voice came from the back seat: "If you want to go, then go; you've already kissed her, do you intend not to take responsibility for her?"
"I don't," Situ denied quickly, without a second of hesitation, pushing open the car door and rushing toward that car.
On the national highway leading to the Airport, countless headlights flickered, illuminating the world as if it were broad daylight.
Inside the car, the middle-aged man wearing a black mask said coldly: "Retreat!"
He hadn't expected Sheng Yu to have a backup plan.
Was it because he was afraid Shen Yijing had prepared an escape route, or had he long suspected that there was someone behind Shen Yijing?
If it were the former, he had no need to worry.
But if it were the latter...
A shadow seemed to fall over the man's face; then he could not wait.
Upon receiving the man's order, the Bodyguard immediately turned the car around, yet the road ahead was blocked by Sheng Yu's men, and the perimeter of the encirclement was constantly shrinking.
"Head to Licheng!"
The Bodyguard quickly changed direction, slammed on the accelerator, and under the cover of other cars and bodyguards, broke through the encirclement from the breakthrough point.
The middle-aged man looked back through the windshield.
Watching his own men being crushed by Sheng Yu's forces with overwhelming superiority, suffering total annihilation, his clenched knuckles creaked, and monstrous rage surged in his eyes.
"It's bad, Boss, they're catching up!"
The Bodyguard's expression changed.
The man quickly turned to look behind him, and sure enough, after their car had broken through the encirclement and escaped, a black sedan followed closely behind.
Like a leopard hunting in the night, its movements were swift and agile; once it pounced, it would tear out a throat and shatter bones.
Although the night was deep and there was no moonlight, his intuition told him that the person in that car was Sheng Yu!
"Drive faster, I'll have someone arrange for a few people to meet us in Licheng, we need to shake them off quickly!"
A piercing roar echoed along the national highway.
Ahead lay the territory of Licheng; this section of the road was under maintenance and subject to traffic control, half-closed for construction and half-open for alternating traffic.
Although construction was not underway in the dead of night, the newly laid cement on that section had not yet fully dried and remained blocked; they would have to wait for the cars in the opposite lane to pass before their car could proceed.
However, the key problem now was that Sheng Yu's men were pursuing ever more tightly; with a time difference of only a dozen seconds, once their car stopped, they would be caught by Sheng Yu in no time.
The middle-aged man said sharply: "Charge through!"
On a night without moonlight, several cars sped along.
Before long, the rain grew heavier, bean-sized raindrops pelting the car windows, and thunder rumbled incessantly across the sky.
Zhu Yuan was startled awake by the thunder; she opened her eyes and discovered the window was not closed. She got up and walked to the window in her slippers; the window frame was soaked by the rain.
She couldn't help but look toward the courtyard.
With the rain this heavy, wouldn't that grapevine be washed away?
Although it had grown quite a bit over the past month, she had never planted such things and didn't know if its root system was stable.
Unable to set her mind at ease, Zhu Yuan walked out of the room; as the motion-sensor light in the hallway turned on, a Bodyguard rushed up from downstairs, looked at Zhu Yuan holding an umbrella, and asked, "Miss Zhu, what's wrong?"
"I'm going to check on the grapevine."
"The rain is so heavy, and you are pregnant; I'll go check it instead. Don't worry, we will protect the grapes planted by the Second Master."
As the Bodyguard spoke, he hurried down the stairs.
Zhu Yuan returned to her room and walked to the window; the lights in the courtyard turned on, and she saw the Bodyguard walk to the spot where the grapevine was planted while holding an umbrella, bend down to check something, and a moment later, he looked up, nodded at her, and made a gesture indicating everything was fine.
Zhu Yuan smiled slightly and closed the window.
She did not notice a car in the darkness approaching the small path near the courtyard.
Inside the car, the Bodyguard said solemnly, "With bodyguards guarding it, it must be a wealthy person's private residence."
The middle-aged man frowned; since it was a residence guarded by bodyguards, he could not hide inside. They had managed to shake off Sheng Yu's car halfway there thanks to the coincidental cover of a truck, and if he could hide in a nearby house, he would be able to escape successfully.
However, Licheng was on the border, and the forces at the border were intricate and complex; one could not easily provoke any side.
"Detour!"
After their car bypassed it, the car that had been tailing them closely also followed.
Sheng Yu gripped the steering wheel tightly, and through the gaps in the courtyard wall, he saw the small courtyard with its lights on; he shifted his gaze away expressionlessly and slammed his foot down on the accelerator.
The cold wind whistled through the cracks in the window, carrying with it the faint, lingering scent of snow.
