Chapter 294: I Will Take Her and Fly Far Away

~8 min read 1,561 words

Pei Ling stood outside the door for a while; when Zhu Yuan came out, her eyes were still red.

She was surprised to see Pei Ling at the doorway.

"Softened your heart?"

Pei Ling stood before her.

After saying this, he tugged at the corner of his mouth again, "Wrong, you never let him go, so where does this talk of a soft heart come from? Do you believe what he said?"

"I don't know." Zhu Yuan's heart was in chaos, but her mind was clear.

The public opinion that evening was overwhelming; it was impossible for Sheng Yu to have made no preparations.

After analyzing what he said even a little, she knew it was true.

She said in a muffled voice, "I'm going back to my room to take a shower first."

Her dress had been stained with his blood when Sheng Yu held her.

"Alright."

As they brushed past each other, she stopped and said, "Go eat first, you must eat."

Her attitude never changed; the moment she spoke, it was the tone of a long-time friend.

Pei Ling smiled slightly, "Why do you worry so much? Don't you get tired?"

"If you eat properly, I won't have to worry about you," Zhu Yuan said, walking toward the stairs.

Pei Ling watched her back quietly until she went upstairs and disappeared around the corner; only then did he withdraw his gaze, turn, and enter the room.

Sheng Yu thought it was Zhu Yuan returning, and his eyes lit up, but upon seeing Pei Ling walk in at the doorway, his gaze darkened and his thin lips pressed tightly together.

"Here to see if I'm dead?"

"If this little injury could take your life, you truly wouldn't have the face to live in this world." Pei Ling walked over and opened the other window as well.

He was exceptionally sensitive to the smell of blood, even more so than the pregnant Zhu Yuan.

However, what surprised him was that in normal times, if he had said such a thing, Sheng Yu would definitely have retorted twice as hard; neither would have spared the other their sharp tongues, yet Sheng Yu was silent this time.

"Thank you."

Pei Ling's hand gripping the window frame paused slightly; his broad, rough palm pressed against the smooth, delicate wooden edge, his jaw tightening, "Thanking me for what?"

If the people in Jingdu City saw these two, who were at daggers drawn just before, suddenly being so polite, they would absolutely be shocked.

Guessing what he was talking about, Pei Ling still hoped he didn't know.

But things always went against his wishes; he had experienced this from childhood to adulthood.

Following Sheng Yu's words, "My child with Yuanyuan," Pei Ling sneered, "Outsiders all know I am Yuanyuan's husband and know that is my child; what does it have to do with you?"

Sheng Yu's expression sank, coldness overflowing in his eyes, "Don't force me to take action."

"Can you even beat me right now?" Pei Ling scoffed.

Sheng Yu looked deeply at his figure, which was thinner than before, "If it were your previous state, I certainly couldn't beat you, but now you are ill, and although I am injured, the worst case is that we both end up defeated."

"What do you know?" Pei Ling turned back, his eyes sharp as blades.

"Why aren't you having surgery?"

Back when Yuanyuan was taken away by Pei Ling, he had already had Situ conduct an in-depth investigation into Pei Ling.

He had known two months ago that Pei Ling was suffering from a serious illness.

Pei Ling chuckled softly, turning to look out the window at the grape trellis in the courtyard; the vines had already covered the entire frame, the leaves oily green, but the grapes wouldn't make it this year, as the flowers hadn't even bloomed yet, and the natural growing season for grapes would soon be over.

"I don't trust her, and I don't trust you."

Sheng Yu's fingers clenched, but there was no anger on his face, only calm, waveless stillness.

"I won't let her have any more accidents. You can also rest assured and go get treatment."

Pei Ling's knuckles pressed white marks into the window frame, and he said meaningfully, "Sheng Yu, you just have better luck than me; if it were just a little bit different, I could have guarded her forever too."

Smart as Sheng Yu was, his gaze stiffened slightly upon hearing these words; just as he was about to say something, both heard footsteps approaching—not light, not heavy—it was the sound of Zhu Yuan's footsteps.

Pei Ling turned and walked toward the bed, kicking the bed frame.

"If you dare say it, I will take her and fly far away."

This iron-frame bed had been set up temporarily and wasn't particularly stable; when Pei Ling kicked it, the bed swayed several times, causing Sheng Yu's body to sway and pull at the wound on his waist and abdomen.

He suddenly bit down on his back molars and cursed, "Fuck," under his breath.

Both looked simultaneously toward the doorway at Zhu Yuan, who had changed into a clean dress.

Zhu Yuan was actually worried they would fight, and since Pei Li was injured, no one dared to pull them apart; she just came over to take a look, and if they really started fighting, she would sit at the door and watch until they felt embarrassed.

But in fact, they were not fighting.

They had both matured.

Seeing them safe and sound, Zhu Yuan turned and walked toward the dining room; after that, she didn't go back to the room to see Sheng Yu.

In the afternoon, Sheng Yu received a call from Situ.

The phone in the Chairman's Office was being bombarded by major media outlets, and Sheng Hongyao was being surrounded by reporters and interviewed on the scene.

In the interview video, Sheng Hongyao expressed his affection for Youyou, saying that the relationship between grandfather and grandson was becoming closer and closer, that Youyou was a very sensible and cute child, and that he was looking forward to Youyou returning to the Sheng Family.

Seeing the news, Pei Ling laughed, "Calling a son a grandson, you people in the Sheng Family have so many strange habits."

"He is him, I am me; I don't have this habit." Sheng Yu said while putting on his clothes and fastening the buttons.

The black shirt was Pei Ling's; the two were of similar height, and over a month ago, Pei Ling had a similar build to him; the unworn clothes fit Sheng Yu perfectly.

After Sheng Yu finished dressing, he walked out of the room; he looked around but didn't see Zhu Yuan's figure.

"Don't think about it, she doesn't want to see you right now." Pei Ling leaned against the door frame, arms crossed.

Sheng Yu wanted to go find her, but he knew she needed peace and quiet now and couldn't have such large emotional swings like at noon.

He only looked toward the stairs leading to the second floor, withdrawing his gaze with lingering reluctance.

"I will remember your kindness."

Pei Ling said slowly, "I treat the woman I love well, what business is it of yours?"

Sheng Yu's hand, which was buttoning his sleeve, paused; he raised his eyes to glare coldly at him, "You had better recover soon, so I can beat you to death again."

"Boastful," Pei Ling said leisurely, "I could take you on with one hand."

Pei Ling assigned a Bodyguard to drive for Sheng Yu, for no other reason than the fear that he might die halfway there.

Zhu Yuan stood in front of the second-floor window; this position was just right for seeing outside the small courtyard's gate.

Watching the tall and upright man get into the car, she clenched her fingers and withdrew her gaze with a complicated expression.

As soon as she turned her head, she saw Pei Ling standing outside the door, his eyes deep, not knowing how long he had been watching her.

Zhu Yuan feigned a yawn, "So sleepy, it's time for a nap."

"I asked him how he found this place; do you want to know?"

"Not interested." Zhu Yuan walked over to close the door.

Pei Ling, however, braced one hand against the door and looked down into her eyes, "He said he was chasing someone that day, and when he passed by here, he saw the couplets outside the gate; the characters on the couplets were uniquely ugly."

A flush visibly climbed onto Zhu Yuan's face.

Pei Ling was relentless, his brows and eyes smiling, "I told you long ago that those characters were ugly, but you wouldn't believe me; look, you've been exposed."

Zhu Yuan was embarrassed and angry, "It wasn't written for you to see!"

With a bang, she slammed the door shut with force.

How were her characters ugly?

One after another, they insisted on saying her characters were ugly!

Looking at the slammed door, Pei Ling let out a low laugh; this was more like her.

And Sheng Yu, who had just left the borders of Licheng, received another call from Situ.

"Young Master Yu, the initial DNA Sequence of Youyou provided by Zhu Jingyao has successfully matched the father-son relationship with Sheng Hongyao."
