Chapter 57: You Can Consider Your Death Worthy

~8 min read 1,533 words

"Ding—"

Seeing the transfer notification that had just arrived on her phone, Zhu Yuan nodded, "I have received the money."

"Then when are you going to save An'an?" Zhu Chaoqin asked her impatiently.

Zhu Yuan glanced out the window; the sky had already turned dark.

She said with a sincere expression, "If I set off for the Pei Family Bank now, it will be pitch black by the time I arrive. It's so dangerous for a girl like me to go to a place like that late at night; I'll be scared."

After a pause, she added with an expression that seemed to be looking out for the Zhu Family, "If someone happens to take photos, wouldn't my previous clarification be in vain? For the sake of the Zhu Family's reputation, I'll go in broad daylight tomorrow."

Hearing her use the same words he had previously used to scold her, Zhu Chaoqin had no time to dwell on it, his heart filled with worry, "Then what about your sister? An'an has never suffered since she was a child; how can she endure this?"

"I was also raised like a princess by my father, mother, brother, and grandfather in the Zhu Family, and I have never suffered either. Zhu An'an is the older sister, so she should yield to her younger sister for once. I'm afraid she'll just have to be wronged and stay there for one more night."

Zhu An'an had tried to frame her more than once or twice; letting her stay at the Pei Family Bank for one more night was already letting her off easy.

Seeing that she was about to leave, Feng Mingyue hurriedly stopped her, coaxing her, "Yuanyuan, be a good girl and go bring your sister back now."

"Tomorrow morning." Zhu Yuan gave them no room for negotiation.

Zhu Chaoqin's face darkened, "Go now."

Zhu Yuan said in a slow, leisurely tone, "Tomorrow afternoon."

"How could you..." Feng Mingyue was so angry she couldn't speak, her eyes red.

"The day after tomorrow morning." Zhu Yuan raised an eyebrow.

Zhu Chaoqin suppressed the urge to slam the table and lowered his anger, "Don't go too far."

"Zhu An'an framed me so badly; the only reason I'm willing to save her is for the sake of the five hundred thousand. Since you are all so anxious..."

Zhu Yuan made a gesture of swiping her phone screen and opened her mobile banking app, "Then I don't dare to accept this money. You had better hire someone else."

"No!" Feng Mingyue pressed down on her hand and shook her head at Zhu Chaoqin.

Zhu Chaoqin took a deep breath and finally compromised, staring at Zhu Yuan's face.

"Tomorrow morning it is. You must keep your word."

"Of course."

Early the next morning, Zhu Yuan took care of Zhu Qi after breakfast, gave the caregiver a few instructions, and said she was going to the Theater.

When she reached the downstairs of the inpatient department, the Zhu Family's car was already waiting there.

Sitting in the back seat were an exhausted-looking Zhu Chaoqin and Feng Mingyue with red, puffy eyes; they must not have slept all night.

As soon as they saw Zhu Yuan, they looked at her as if she were a savior, their eyes filled with resentment.

But Zhu Yuan's gaze swept over them, and instead of choosing to sit with them, she pulled open the front passenger door and got in.

On the way to the Pei Family Bank, no one spoke.

Finally, they arrived at the Pei Family Bank.

The car stopped, and Zhu Yuan was the first to open the door and get out.

Just as she was about to walk forward, a warm hand suddenly gripped her wrist.

At that temperature, she thought for a moment that her mother had returned.

When she turned her head, what she saw was Feng Mingyue's worried expression, "You must bring An'an out."

Zhu Yuan's eyes felt a little hot, and she lowered her head, smiling at herself mockingly.

"You touched the bracelet my mother gave me."

Feng Mingyue looked down and saw that Zhu Yuan's wrist indeed had a red agate bracelet. It probably wasn't any rare treasure, as Zhu Yuan said it was a gift from her mother, and the Zhu Family was just a family slightly wealthier than the average person.

Zhu Yuan's right hand rested on it, gently stroking it.

This was something she had worn since she was ten years old, after she had suffered from a high fever for several days and Mother Zhu had gone to the temple, bowing every three steps and kneeling every five, to pray for it for her.

She had always worn it on her hand.

Feng Mingyue didn't know what it meant to Zhu Yuan and didn't look at it for long.

"Go in quickly." Zhu Chaoqin spoke up.

Zhu Yuan didn't look at them again.

Suddenly, Feng Mingyue's voice came from behind: "You be careful yourself, too."

Zhu Yuan's footsteps paused slightly, but she walked to the entrance of the Pei Family Bank without looking back.

She said politely to the Bodyguard, "Hello, please pass on a message for me. I am Zhu Yuan, and I am here to see the Second Master of the Pei Family."

In the cold and damp room.

Hearing the sound of the door opening, Zhu An'an, who was lying on the ground, began to tremble as if by reflex.

A beam of light shone into the dark room.

As the footsteps slowly approached, she tried hard to open her eyes and look toward the light source, when suddenly the pair of feet stopped in front of her.

Immediately after, the man's enchanting face appeared before her eyes.

This was a face that made countless women both fearful and yearning.

The Second Master of the Pei Family, the man whom so many girls in Jingdu City had secretly fantasized about in their dreams.

Yet when Zhu An'an saw him, her eyes were filled with nothing but terror.

"Second Master of the Pei Family..."

"Shh, you talk too much."

Pei Ling stood up, toying with a remote control in his hand, and said in a merciful tone: "I can't keep starving you."

A glimmer of light lit up in the depths of Zhu An'an's eyes; had he tortured her enough and was he going to let her go?

But the next second, the man's words made her fall into a cold abyss.

"Otherwise, the meat won't taste good."

As his voice fell, the remote control in his hand emitted a sensor sound, and immediately after, Zhu An'an heard movement from the wall on the right.

She looked over vigilantly; Pei Ling had plenty of ways to torture people, and she was terrified.

That wall slowly moved to the side.

As the wall moved away, five massive iron cages appeared before her eyes.

Zhu An'an's blood ran cold; she saw that inside the cages... were wolves!

"Ah—"

Zhu An'an screamed!

She struggled to crawl toward the corner, having long since lost her usual dignified and gentle demeanor.

In an instant, the wolves in the cages let out roars, baring their fangs and claws as they slammed against the cage doors.

Pei Ling sat on a black high-backed chair, his long legs spread casually, not a shred of pity in his eyes.

He whistled, and the pack of wolves gradually quieted down.

Looking at the ashen-faced Zhu An'an on the floor, he said coldly, "My friends haven't eaten meat for several days; you can consider this a death for a worthy cause."

Just then, his phone rang.

He answered the call and heard the Bodyguard report, "Second Master, someone named Zhu Yuan says she wants to see you."

Heh.

She had come.

"Let her in."

Zhu An'an could not hear what the person on the other end of the phone said; she seemed unable to hear anything now, with only the sound of wolves howling in her ears.

Until a graceful figure appeared at the doorway.

Zhu An'an was stunned, her eyes turning red, "Zhu Yuan..."

As fresh air poured in, the pack of wolves that had originally quieted down suddenly began slamming against the cages as if they had gone mad.

The low growls of the wolves and the sounds of impact rose and fell one after another.

The custom-made, heavy iron cages seemed as if they could barely hold up.

Pei Ling leaned back, watching this scene with indifference.

Zhu An'an was so frightened she fainted.

Zhu Yuan stood at the doorway, and the moment she saw the scene before her, she was also stunned.

Yet, the next second, she calmly raised her right hand, pinched her thumb and index finger together to her lips, and swept a sharp gaze over those wolves.

A sharp, long whistle rang out!

The pack of wolves that had been active in the cages suddenly stopped slamming, let out low growls, and retreated one after another.

Witnessing all of this, a flash of astonishment crossed Pei Ling's eyes; he narrowed his eyes and looked at Zhu Yuan standing at the doorway with a scrutinizing gaze.

This woman...
