Chapter 95: Sleep with Me
Zhu Yuan suppressed the urge to throw the cake in his face and began to sing the English version of the birthday song.
It had to be said that Zhu Yuan's voice was truly pleasant when she sang.
Yuan Fengye listened with growing enthusiasm, clapping along, the corners of his mouth turned up as he hummed along too.
Suddenly, he felt a chill creeping up the back of his neck; he immediately stopped humming and looked around—where on earth was there a draft in Yu Ge's house!
In the crowd, Dong Shu clapped along.
Looking across the crowd at Zhu Yuan, and then at Sheng Yu, her eyes couldn't help but grow moist.
She blinked, quickly composing her emotions, and a smile tugged at the corners of her mouth.
In the flickering candlelight, Sheng Yu stared at Zhu Yuan's face.
Finally, Zhu Yuan finished the song.
Sheng Yu held the knife and said reluctantly, "Passable."
Yuan Fengye walked to Zhu Yuan's side and whispered, "Little sister-in-law, Yu Ge means it's very good; if it were bad, he would have started scolding directly."
Zhu Yuan returned him a smile.
Sheng Yu's hand holding the knife paused.
She returned to Dong Shu's side, and Dong Shu gently bumped her shoulder, "I didn't know you sang so well. Yu Ge is someone who doesn't like listening to birthday songs, yet he actually let you sing the whole English version."
"He probably just felt bored and had nothing to do," Zhu Yuan said.
Dong Shu just smiled and said nothing.
She had known Sheng Yu for over ten years; she knew exactly what kind of person Sheng Yu was.
He had taken an interest in Zhu Yuan.
She looked at Zhu Yuan's profile, her smile deepening.
The servants helped divide the cut cake into individual portions.
Except for Sheng Yu and Qi Jing, who didn't eat sweets, no one else dared not to give Sheng Yu face.
Just then, Situ walked in carrying a box, "Young Master Yu, someone delivered this to the villa entrance."
Sheng Yu's gaze shifted from the face of Zhu Yuan, who was sitting diagonally across from him eating cake, and he glanced casually at the box that was large enough for Situ to hold in both arms.
"Who sent it?"
Situ was cryptic, "It was sent by Shen Yijing."
As soon as his words fell, the entire living room instantly went quiet.
Shen Yijing, Sheng Hongyao's confidante.
The woman Sheng Hongyao had an affair with back when Sheng Yu's mother was still alive.
Everyone knew that in front of Sheng Yu, Shen Yijing was a forbidden word.
Zhu Yuan gripped the fork in her hand tightly, looking with complex eyes at the expressionless man sitting diagonally across from her.
Dong Shu, who was sitting beside her, stood up and said sternly to Situ, "Throw it out!"
Qi Jing frowned.
Situ had been by Sheng Yu's side for so many years; it was impossible for him not to be able to handle such a small matter. He knew that Shen Yijing's name could not be mentioned, yet he had brought the box she sent inside.
"Young Master Yu, why don't you take a look at what's inside first."
Situ carried the box over, placed it at Sheng Yu's feet, and then opened it.
What came into view were some photo frames, albums, and some old items, but one look told you they were of great value.
When he saw a photo frame showing a beautiful, gentle woman holding a cold-faced little boy, Sheng Yu's expression stiffened.
This is...
Qi Jing was stunned and instinctively looked at Sheng Yu.
It was Sheng Yu as a child with his mother.
He knew that after Sheng Yu's mother, Yu Lan, passed away, Sheng Hongyao had locked away everything related to her, including photos, to prevent Sheng Yu from coming into contact with them.
And the photos of Yu Lan from before she married had all been brought by her to the Sheng Family, and had also been locked away by Sheng Hongyao.
From the age of twelve until today, his twenty-sixth birthday, Sheng Yu had not seen a single photo of his mother.
"Yu Ge..." The usually grinning Yuan Fengye's expression was heavy.
Sheng Yu lowered his eyes to look at the items in the box, not touching them, nor telling anyone to throw them out.
Even the few people close to him could hardly see the expression in his eyes.
"Everyone out." The man's cold voice had not a trace of warmth.
Qi Jing knew he needed to be alone to be quiet now, so he was the first to stand up, signaling the others with his eyes.
The men and women left one after another.
The once lively living room had few people left; Qi Jing and Yuan Fengye waited until everyone else had left before heading out.
"Dong Shu," Yuan Fengye reminded her.
Dong Shu looked at Sheng Yu over by the sofa, not daring to show obvious heartache, but she wanted to stay and accompany him.
"Miss Dong," Situ walked up to her and made a gesture of invitation.
Dong Shu looked at Sheng Yu, then at Situ, and gritted her teeth as she walked out.
She looked back inside every few steps.
She saw that when Zhu Yuan was about to leave, Situ made a gesture for her to stay.
If it were in the past, she would have found it hard to notice these anomalies, but now that she knew the truth, every little detail seemed magnified.
After leaving Villa No. 1, Dong Shu's car kept watch outside the villa area, but she never saw Zhu Yuan come out.
Yu Ge wanted Zhu Yuan to stay with him.
Even though she was the one who understood him better.
Dong Shu leaned against the back of the chair and lit a cigarette.
After finishing the cigarette, she touched her face, which was covered in icy tears.
She took out her phone, dialed a number, and said expressionlessly, "Dad, tell Old Madam Sheng on my behalf that I am willing to marry into the Sheng Family."
……
Zhu Yuan sat motionless on the sofa, looking at the man opposite her.
Everyone else had left, the servants had also withdrawn, and besides the two of them, only Situ was in the living room.
Finally, the man on the sofa moved, picked up the box, and walked toward the stairs without saying a word.
"Miss Zhu."
Situ reminded Zhu Yuan.
Zhu Yuan sat where she was and clenched her fingers; Situ did not know what she was thinking during those two seconds of hesitation, and then she stood up and followed him.
Situ was taken aback.
He had not expected that Miss Zhu would really stay.
Situ did not follow them upstairs, and the entire villa was so quiet that it seemed as if only the two of them were left.
The room had no lights on, and the door was open.
Zhu Yuan only took one look before sitting on the floor outside the room.
Time passed in silence.
A cold wind rose outside the window, blowing down the few remaining withered leaves on the branches, and the leaves hit the glass with a crisp sound.
The man's hand gripped the edge of the photo frame tightly, the wooden frame creaking in his grip as if it would shatter the next second.
In his ears was the woman's crazed and desperate laughter amidst the great fire.
Sheng Yu threw the photo frame aside and stood up; darkness shrouded him, but it could not hide the bone-chilling coldness on him.
He stepped out of the room and almost kicked the person sitting outside the door.
When he saw the figure curled up by the door who had already fallen asleep, his heart felt as if it had been fiercely squeezed by a hand.
The baleful aura shrouding him seemed to crack at this moment and gradually dissipated.
The light was soft, and the person who had fallen asleep had let down her guard, completely devoid of the restraint and fear she showed when facing him.
He had thought that she had already left after Situ conveyed his meaning.
Having not slept all night and not having slept soundly during the day, sleepiness washed over Zhu Yuan not long after she sat on the floor.
She did not know how long she had been asleep when her body suddenly lifted into the air.
She woke up with a start from her dream, meeting those deep, quiet black eyes of his.
Her body stiffened and trembled almost instinctively.
The hands holding her slowly tightened, and Sheng Yu carried her to the bed and lay down without a word.
The quilt covered both of them, and Sheng Yu's warm, large palm pressed down on the top of her head, preventing her from resisting.
His voice was hoarse, "Sleep with me, and I will send you back tomorrow."
