Chapter 97: Yu Ge, I Want to Make You Happy

~9 min read 1,720 words

Seeing Sheng Yu, Dong Shu stood up immediately, "Yu Ge."

He had only just returned now, having spent the entire night with Zhu Yuan.

Her mind recalled the scene she had stumbled upon outside the door: the gasps, the veins bulging on his hands, and him pulling Zhu Yuan completely into his embrace to kiss her wantonly.

Such intense possessiveness—the man she had loved for ten years had given it to someone else.

Knowing that almost no woman could enter his circle, she had cut off her favorite long hair, put on neutral clothing, and adopted a carefree, uninhibited demeanor, living as a tomboy in the eyes of others, all just to fit into his circle.

After all these years, was she content?

Dong Shu clenched her fingers.

Sheng Yu glanced at her, strode over the threshold, and looking at the atmosphere in the room, asked nonchalantly, "What is the meaning of this?"

At the head of the table, Sheng Hongyao was accustomed to his arrogant manner, especially since he never showed a pleasant face to him, his own father.

However, he did not care in the slightest how Sheng Yu viewed him.

What he wanted was for the power in Sheng Yu's hands to be returned to him.

He took a sip of tea and said in a steady tone, "A marriage arrangement your grandmother found for you. Dong Shu is a friend from your circle; you know her roots and are familiar with her. It couldn't be better."

After Sheng Hongyao spoke, Dong Shu stared unblinkingly at Sheng Yu, until the cold sneer on the man's lips froze and he looked at her with a dark face.

Her expression changed, and she appeared to be in a hurry to explain: "Yu Ge..."

Sheng Yu's gaze was icy, and Dong Shu swallowed her words back down.

"Arranging a marriage for me?"

Sheng Yu withdrew his gaze, glanced at Sheng Hongyao and Old Madam Sheng, then walked over and sat on the sofa, his posture languid, yet his eyes revealing a ruthlessness that made one afraid to look directly at him.

"Dong Shu has already agreed; what more does a grown man like you have to say?" Sheng Hongyao said in a deep voice.

Sheng Yu did not look at Dong Shu, but sneered, "What, you can't make decisions about your own marriage, so you want to impose it on me? Wait until you've married Shen Yijing into the Sheng Family gates before you try to manage my affairs."

Sheng Yu knew exactly how to light a fire.

After he finished speaking, Sheng Hongyao endured it for a few seconds, his face turning livid, the veins on the back of the hand holding the teacup straining.

"Housekeeper, take the guests to the side parlor to rest."

Sheng Hongyao suppressed his anger.

The housekeeper immediately stepped forward and walked to the Dong couple and Dong Shu, "Mr. Dong, Mrs. Dong, Miss Dong, please follow me to the side parlor."

Mrs. Dong clutched her daughter's hand in distress and led her toward the side parlor; the couple had wanted to take their daughter and leave, but the Sheng Family's status was laid out before them, and they dared not offend them.

But what did Sheng Yu mean?

Could it be that their Dong Family daughter wasn't good enough for him?

Their Dong Family was now one of the Five Great Families; looking across the country, among the eligible women who could match him, their daughter was the best choice.

Dong Shu, being led away, looked back at Sheng Yu sitting on the sofa.

Unfortunately, Sheng Yu did not look in this direction even once.

After the Dong family members went to the side parlor, the servants also left one after another, leaving only Old Madam Sheng, Sheng Hongyao, and Sheng Yu in the reception hall.

Sheng Hongyao stared coldly at Sheng Yu; he had wanted to marry Shen Yijing for more than a year or two.

But Sheng Yu had made a fierce vow: as long as he lived for one day, Shen Yijing would never enter the Sheng Family gates.

Even when he wanted to bring Shen Yijing to live at the Sheng residence, Sheng Yu would cause a huge scene, and in the end, it could only be dropped.

Sheng Yu had no bottom line; when he went crazy, there was nothing he wouldn't do.

Although Sheng Hongyao hated him, he also feared him.

Although he was the head of the Sheng Family and Chairman of the Sheng Group, Sheng Yu's wings had gradually grown full in recent years, and he had a premonition that Sheng Yu would soon surpass him and ride above him.

He absolutely could not let such a thing happen.

Therefore, he had to weaken his power as soon as possible.

The Dong Family was able to rank among the Kyoto Five Great Families because he had single-handedly supported them; the Dong Family was under his control, and if Dong Shu became his daughter-in-law, things would be much easier.

Old Madam Sheng waited until the guests had left before asking Sheng Yu in a heavy tone: "Didn't your father say you agreed?"

"I said it was up to you, I didn't say I would agree. You can find as many as you want, what does it have to do with me?"

Sheng Yu lit a cigarette, gave a scoff, and lazily raised his eyes.

Old Madam Sheng looked displeased, but she dared not be too aggressive, "What is wrong with Dong Shu? She is beautiful and has a good personality, she is open and generous, and the Dong Family's status is worthy of the Sheng Family."

"What is worthy is the Sheng Family, not me, Sheng Yu."

"Without the Sheng Family, would you have today!" Sheng Hongyao said angrily.

A mocking arc hooked at the corners of Sheng Yu's lips, "It seems Chairman Sheng has forgotten completely over time how I got this position of President. This position was not given to me by the Sheng Family; it is something I obtained myself."

Sheng Hongyao's hand on the armrest clenched, his face gloomy.

Since childhood, Sheng Yu had been so intelligent he was nearly demonic; whether it was learning ability or business acumen, everything came easily to him.

He was Sheng Hongyao's only bloodline; entering the Sheng Group was not something Sheng Hongyao alone could control—with the Board of Directors there, he could not stop it.

He passed every test along the way to become a qualified successor to the group.

But for Sheng Yu to become the group's President, Sheng Hongyao had veto power.

Sheng Yu was born to the woman he loathed, and in the year Sheng Yu turned eighteen, he had killed his and Yijing's child; he wished he could kill Sheng Yu, so naturally, he would not let Sheng Yu get his wish.

Yet his veto power had been suppressed by Sheng Yu's maternal grandfather using Yu Lan's shares, ultimately pushing Sheng Yu into the position.

Old Madam Sheng lowered her eyes, remaining silent.

The reception hall suddenly fell quiet.

"After you marry Dong Shu, I will return everything that belonged to your mother to you."

As soon as Sheng Hongyao's voice fell, Old Madam Sheng hurriedly pressed his hand, "Hongyao!"

How could he casually use Sheng Yu's mother's things as a threat? Was the relationship between father and son not bad enough already?

A cold sneer.

Sheng Yu's icy gaze stared straight at Sheng Hongyao, "So this is what you were waiting for."

"First you had your mistress send me some things to make me think of my mother, and then you made me agree to your demands."

From the age of twelve until yesterday, he had not seen a single photograph of his mother.

Sheng Hongyao had intentionally hidden the items away under lock and key, making them impossible for him to find, not to mention that Sheng Hongyao had threatened back then that if he kept looking, he would burn all of his mother's belongings to the ground.

People are always greedy.

Once they see something, they only want more.

He crushed the cigarette in his hand, stood up, and walked out, "If you want to threaten me, then go ahead and try."

Suddenly, Sheng Hongyao's gloomy voice came from behind: "Sheng Yu, you are my son; you hate me, yet you know I understand you best. You don't want to marry Dong Shu—is it because that woman has captured your heart?"

A chill spread through the depths of Sheng Yu's eyes, but his footsteps did not falter in the slightest.

Dong Shu had not gone to wait in the side hall but stayed outside the reception room; finally seeing Sheng Yu come out, she quickened her pace to follow him.

"Yu Ge."

Sheng Yu did not look at her, turning instead to walk toward the garden.

Dong Shu followed behind him; winter had already arrived in Kyoto, and only the flowers in the greenhouse were still in bloom, while the garden was desolate.

Dong Shu just watched as Sheng Yu stood before her and lit a cigarette.

Just as a gust of wind blew by, the lighter Sheng Yu had today was not windproof, and the flame flickered in the wind; Dong Shu instinctively reached out her hand to help him shield the flame.

Sheng Yu, however, shifted his body to dodge her hand.

He flicked out the flame, bit down on the cigarette, and gave her a cold look, "Why did you agree?"

Dong Shu stiffly withdrew her hand, "Because I want to help you."

"Help me?"

A strong sense of oppression washed over her; Dong Shu steadied her nerves and spoke with difficulty: "Last night outside your room, I saw you kiss Zhu Yuan."

Sheng Yu narrowed his eyes, a faint chill gathering in their depths.

"You and I both know very well what Sheng would do if he found out about Zhu Yuan's existence; he would not let Zhu Yuan be."

Dong Shu took a deep breath and summoned her courage.

"Last night you wanted to hear Zhu Yuan sing a birthday song, I helped you; you want to be with Zhu Yuan, I will help you. Yu Ge, I want you to be happy."
