Chapter 27: A Quick Change Into a Rich Lady!

~8 min read 1,404 words

She took two deep breaths, steadied her emotions, dished out the dumplings and set them aside covered, waiting for her daughter to finish before eating.

Taking advantage of the elders and sisters eating, Cheng Qiuyun dished out another big bowl of dumplings and carried it toward a corner.

Cheng Old Madam glanced over, then lowered her eyes without a word.

Meanwhile, on a lush, leafy big tree elsewhere, Cheng Xin and Cheng Sen were gnawing on wild fruits.

The two whispered back and forth.

"What do you think the Old Madam and the others are eating? Smells pretty good."

Suddenly, the two shut up at once, even slowing their breathing, and stared tensely down at the base of the tree.

Cheng Qiuyun set the bowl of dumplings on a large stone beside the tree roots.

As if by chance, she glanced upward, then casually looked away and turned back to her family.

The two in the tree: "!!!"

The two communicated frantically with their eyes, eyebrows nearly flying off, blinking so hard they were about to cramp.

Cheng Sen: What's going on? Did she bring us food?

Cheng Xin: I... guess? But how does the Eldest Miss know we're here?

So, when exactly had they been exposed?!

In the end, the two jumped down from the tree—since they'd been spotted, might as well eat!

Cheng Qiuyun hadn't left; she was hiding behind a clump of bushes not far ahead.

Seeing this, seeing those two familiar faces, she clamped her hand hard over her mouth to keep from sobbing.

So at least, Shengxuan was still alive...

And on the Modern Era side, after An Luo had a cloud-based meal with Zaituan.

She headed out with four gold ingots. Yesterday she went to a gold shop; today she decided to check out a pawnshop.

Her first stop was the biggest pawnshop in the city.

The moment she walked in, there were plenty of customers inside, so she found a window with no one at it.

"Hello, what's today's gold price?"

Behind the counter sat a girl in uniform, with permed woolly curls and delicate makeup.

Hearing the voice, she shifted her gaze from her phone to An Luo, looked her up and down, didn't answer her question, and just irritably pointed at the window next door.

"Go queue up first!"

Seeing the phone in her hand, An Luo frowned.

"Don't you have no customers here?"

Hearing that, the girl grew even more impatient.

"Can't you see I'm busy?!"

Then she rolled her eyes and muttered under her breath.

"Looking at you, you don't seem like someone who'd have anything good—three grams, five grams of gold, not even worth my trouble."

Just then, the window next door finished up, and a girl with a bun hairstyle happened to overhear that remark.

She hurried to apologize to An Luo.

"Sorry about that, ma'am. You're looking to sell gold, right? Today's buyback price at our pawnshop is 550 yuan per gram."

Seeing her attitude was so good, An Luo couldn't bring herself to get angry, though her expression was still sour. She nodded.

"Yes."

Saying so, she pulled a plastic bag out of her bag and set it on the counter with a 'thud.'

The bun-hair girl sucked in a sharp breath.

Oh my god, where did this rich lady come from?

Such a huge lump of gold, just casually tossed in a plastic bag, and what's more...

It's a... garbage bag!

Are all you rich folks this plain and unpretentious, so unfussy about details?!

Seeing her still not reacting, An Luo looked over in confusion.

"Is there a problem?"

"Huh?"

The bun-hair girl came back to herself.

"N-no, nothing, let me verify it for you first."

Meanwhile, the curly-haired girl next door suddenly stood up, walked over and shoved her aside, smiling sweetly at An Luo, her attitude doing a complete 180.

"Dear customer, your gold is fine. Next, let's weigh it."

The bun-hair girl clenched her fists, angry but not daring to speak up.

Zhu Lin was the deputy manager's niece, while she was just a tiny intern—what could she say?

An Luo said coldly.

"No need, you go on being busy."

Then she looked at the girl who'd been shoved aside.

"Let this young lady help me."

The smile on the curly-haired girl's lips froze for a moment, then she smiled again.

"Xiao Ye is just an intern, not experienced enough. I'm afraid she can't provide you with quality service."

An Luo nearly laughed out of sheer annoyance—did she even hear what she was saying?

Buying back gold? What kind of service does that even need?!

An Luo ignored her and looked at the girl with the bun, asking.

"Can you do it?"

That girl glanced at Zhu Lin, clenched her teeth, and said loudly and firmly.

"I can!"

Zhu Lin turned her head and glared at her.

"You…"

"What's going on?!"

A middle-aged man in a black suit walked over.

The two quickly stood up straight.

"Hello, Manager Liu."

Manager Liu frowned.

"What's the matter?"

Zhu Lin stepped forward, squeezing Xiao Ye into a corner, and smiled at the newcomer.

"Manager Liu, this lady here came to inquire about the gold price. I'm attending to a customer right now."

Hearing this, An Luo was so angry she laughed.

Did she think that by telling the boss this and securing her position first, she could swallow the earlier unpleasantness and keep selling her the gold?

Then she had miscalculated!

She, An Luo, was not the type to keep her mouth shut and suffer for the sake of face—she would never wrong herself!

"Don't say that, just go ahead and keep busy. I wouldn't dare disturb you, you big busybody!"

Watching Zhu Lin's face turn awkward and embarrassed, An Luo felt wonderful.

"It was you who said you were busy and told me to come to this window."

A faint smile curled at An Luo's lips as she raised an eyebrow and looked at Zhu Lin.

"Could it be you've forgotten?"

"I, I wasn't…"

Zhu Lin was so anxious that sweat poured down her face.

One look, and how could Manager Liu not understand?

His face immediately went cold, and he questioned her sharply.

"What were you busy with just now?!"

As he spoke, his gaze fell on the phone on the desk.

Panic flashed across Zhu Lin's face, and she quickly picked up the phone and hid it behind her back.

"I was maintaining client relationships just now."

The anger in Manager Liu's voice grew even stronger.

"Contacting clients?"

"Fine, then unlock your phone."

Zhu Lin lowered her head and didn't move.

"Unlock it!"

Zhu Lin took the phone out from behind her back, reluctantly unlocked it, and a burst of cheerful music rang out—it was the background music of the short video she had been scrolling through.

Hearing that sound, Zhu Lin's head drooped heavily.

She's done for!

Manager Liu glared at her fiercely.

"I'll deal with your issue later!"

Then he turned to An Luo with a smile, his gaze landing on the pendant hanging around An Luo's neck, and the smile on his face deepened.

"This lady, I sincerely apologize for the unpleasant experience."

An Luo raised her hand and cut him off.

"Enough, let's check the gold first. I have other things to attend to."

"Alright."

"This lady, the gold ingot you've brought out weighs a total of 4,000 grams. Our pawnshop will buy it back at 553 yuan per gram. Is that acceptable to you?"

Hearing this, An Luo raised an eyebrow slightly.

Didn't they say 550 just now?

She looked at the man with a polite, faint smile on his face and sighed inwardly.

He really knows how to do business.

But since she could get a bit more money, of course she wouldn't refuse, and she nodded.

"Fine, let's go with the price you mentioned."

Ten-some minutes later, An Luo's phone received a text message.

【Huaya Bank】 Your account ending in 6688 received a transfer of. 00 yuan on July 10, 20xx. Current account balance:. 00 yuan.

Looking at that string of zeros, An Luo felt as if she were in a dream.

Who would understand? Before walking in, she was still a poor loser with only eight thousand yuan left in her account.

Half an hour later, she had transformed into a little rich lady worth a million!
