Chapter 56: Burst Into Tears with a Wail

~7 min read 1,358 words

Hearing the guard's words, the father and son of the Chen Family were greatly shocked.

"How could they not be there?!"

"When did they disappear?!"

Under the oppressive gazes of the father and son, beads of cold sweat instantly broke out all over the guard's forehead.

He spoke haltingly.

"The Young Master, and that little girl, are both not in the room."

"As for when they disappeared, this subordinate... this subordinate also doesn't know."

The guard's voice grew smaller and smaller, until it was almost inaudible.

Chen Delin glared fiercely at the two guards.

"Didn't I tell you to guard the doorway? How did they get out?!"

One of the guards lowered his head, wiped the beads of sweat from his brow, and replied in a small voice.

"It was the Young Master. The Young Master said you told us subordinates to feed the Horse some grass, so this subordinate stepped away for a moment."

"Really only a moment, just the time it takes to drink half a cup of tea."

Hearing that the two children were missing, the Cheng Family people were frantic with worry and hurried off to search.

Chen Delin also knew that being angry at this moment was useless, but that was the only heir of their old Chen Family.

The guards might indeed be innocent, but his fury could not be suppressed no matter what, and he immediately roared angrily at the guards.

"Then hurry up and go look!"

"Yes!"

Over here, everything was thrown into chaos looking for the children, but as for the two little rascals...

——

"Yi Jiang, let's go back. Grandmother said there are many wild beasts in the Mountain."

Yu'an pressed his lips together, tugged at Yi Jiang's sleeve, and pulled hard in the opposite direction.

Earlier, Yi Jiang had said he wanted to go look outside the courtyard, so he had followed him out.

He hadn't expected them to run into a little rabbit by the roadside. Yi Jiang had chased after it, running farther and farther, and by the time they came back to their senses, they had already reached the foot of the Mountain.

Suddenly, Yi Jiang held up his index finger to his lips.

"Shh!"

"Listen."

Yu'an tilted his head and listened carefully, and heard a childish "Chirp chirp chirp chirp..." sound.

"Look quick, there's a little bird over there!"

Yi Jiang pointed at a patch of weeds beneath a tree not far away. On top of it was a fledgling flapping its wings with great effort, clearly only just hatched not long before.

The two little rascals ran over and chased away a mouse that was trying to harm the little bird.

Yu'an looked up at the bird's nest on the tree branch.

"It can't get back home. What do we do?"

Yi Jiang stood up, thumped his little chest, his face full of confidence.

"Don't worry, I'll send it home!"

Having said that, he carefully placed the fledgling against his chest, rolled up his sleeves, and clambered up the tree using both hands and feet.

Yu'an watched from below, his heart in his mouth, his face full of worry.

"Be careful!"

Yi Jiang had already climbed up onto a tree branch. Now his two legs were wrapped around the thick branch, one arm hugging the trunk, sprawled on top like a little sloth, and he even smiled and waved at Yu'an.

"Don't worry, I've climbed trees taller than this one, I don't even know how many."

"This height is a piece of cake!"

Having said that, he carefully scooted over toward the bird's nest, inching along, inching along, now looking just like a little caterpillar.

Finally reaching the bird's nest, Yi Jiang gently placed the little bird in his arms back among its siblings, and helped patch up the somewhat damaged nest with twigs.

"Little fellow, don't be naughty again. Next time you won't be so lucky, you know. There are jackals and foxes under the tree, they'll eat you up!"

Having safely delivered the fledgling home, Yi Jiang began to slide back down.

"Careful!"

Yu'an let out a terrified shout.

A sudden 'Crack!' — the branch Yi Jiang was standing on snapped, and Yi Jiang...

Plunged straight down!

An Luo frantically swiped at the screen, but to no avail.

Yi Jiang squeezed his eyes shut and screamed at the top of his lungs.

"Ah—help—"

The next instant, someone had grabbed him by the clothes at his chest and was holding him firmly aloft.

Once the sensation of weightlessness passed, Yi Jiang blankly kicked his two legs.

The moment he opened his eyes, he saw a somewhat familiar-looking burly man.

"How is it you two again?"

The burly man's tone was a bit impatient, yet also seemed somewhat helpless.

Yu'an blinked his big round eyes and suddenly slapped his forehead.

"Oh, I remember now, you're the uncle who saved us before!"

"Uncle saved us again, thank you, uncle!"

The burly man set the little one he was carrying down on the ground.

She pressed her lips together and said nothing.

How come every time he ran into these two kids, he either had to save them or had already saved them?

It made it seem as if he were some great, kind person.

Yi Jiang had been scared out of her wits by what just happened; her little face was deathly pale, her eyes rimmed red and brimming with tears, and she stood rooted to the spot, at a loss.

Hearing Yu'an thank him, he finally came back to himself, sniffled, and spoke in a tear-choked voice.

"Thank you, Uncle."

The burly man looked around, appearing rather regretful.

"I'll take you two back first."

He'd just come back later and keep looking.

Just then, shouts came from not far away.

"Yu'an!"

"Yi Jiang!"

"Where are you?"

Hearing her mother and aunt's voices, Yu'an quickly stood on tiptoe and waved back.

"Mother, Aunt, I'm here!"

Tian Qin ran over following the sound, scooped the little one up in one go, and even smacked his bottom a couple of times.

Though her eyes were red from fear, she still put on an angry look.

"You child, running around like that?!"

"Last time you ran into that wild boar, how dangerous was that? Have you forgotten?!"

Seeing her expression as if she were about to cry, Yu'an's eyes reddened too. He pursed his little mouth, stretched out his arms to wrap them around his mother's neck, nuzzled up against her with his soft, chubby little cheek, and apologized in a milky, childish voice to comfort her.

"I'm sorry, Mother. Yu'an didn't mean to. I won't do it again."

Tian Qin buried her face in the little one's neck and let her tears slide down.

"You child, you scared me to death."

On the other side, seeing Yi Jiang standing there safe and sound, the Chen Family father and son finally set their worried hearts at rest.

Once the worry passed, the anger could no longer be held back.

Chen Delin stood with his hands on his hips and bellowed.

"Chen Yijiang! Get over here!"

Hearing her father's voice and recalling the dangerous moment just now, Yi Jiang could barely hold it together. She lifted her leg, wanting to throw herself into her father's arms, but...

Everyone only heard a thud, then watched helplessly as Yi Jiang dropped straight down onto her knees on the ground.

Everyone: "..."

An Luo, off-screen: "???"

Seeing his attitude in admitting his mistake was so good, and glancing at the ground covered in gravel and dead branches, Chen Delin was both angry and heartbroken.

He felt a breath stuck in his throat, unable to go down or come up, terribly uncomfortable.

Chen Ying quickly patted his father's back to soothe him, then gave two light coughs to cover his embarrassment.

"Um, Yi Jiang, knowing you were wrong and correcting it next time is enough. You don't have to perform such a grand ceremony."

Yi Jiang burst out crying with a wail, crying so very, very miserably.

"Wuwuwu..."

"My legs are weak, I can't walk!"

"Wuwu... my knees hurt so much!"
