Chapter 537: The Children Ran Away
Lu Cheng actually forgot about the two children; when he saw Xiao Qin bring them to the hospital again, he finally stood up.
"Wang Bureau Chief, these are two children who got lost coming from Ha City; I'll first go back to the squad to contact the Hasi Sub-bureau, and after I return I'll come over to see Captain Lei."
Anyway, Lei Zhan Ge hasn't woken up yet; Lu Cheng knows he's been waiting here all this time, and even if Lei Zhan Ge does wake up, he'll surely blame him for not putting work first.
Wang Fengshi told him to go take care of his business first; no need to worry about this place.
After leaving the hospital, Lu Cheng stopped and looked at the two children, then glanced at Xiao Qin, who kept yawning.
During the peak of Educated Youth returning to the city, and having not stayed long in Ha City, it was essentially a continuous shift; as a Train Staff, Xiao Qin was obviously exhausted.
Now that the train had arrived, he should have rested properly, but because of these two children, he couldn't return home.
"Xiao Qin, why don't you go back and rest first? I'll take the children back to the squad."
Xiao Qin yawned again: "Will that work?"
Lu Cheng looked at the two children and said, "It's fine; they're supposed to look for a police uncle, and if we don't help them find their father, they'll end up relying on me."
Xiao Qin smiled: "Alright, Chief Lu, I'm indeed too tired, I'll go back first. I'll leave these two kids with you; don't always be harsh with them, the children still need to be coaxed."
Lu Cheng waved his hand; Xiao Qin and the two children gave a few reminders to be well‑behaved, and then left.
Lu Cheng and the two children remained standing on the open area beneath the hospital, big eyes staring at the little ones.
After a moment of standoff, the little girl couldn't help but call out, "Uncle…"
Her voice was soft and milky, sounding more like "Zhu Zhu."
Lu Cheng thought of his niece Qing'er, equally cute and soft.
He wondered whether his older brother would bring the whole family back to the Capital City for the New Year this year, and decided to write a letter later to ask.
He pulled a bicycle over, and Lu Cheng lifted one with a single hand.
The little boy sat on the rear seat, while the little girl clung to the front crossbar.
Possibly worried about Captain Lei's illness, Lu Cheng rode the bicycle with a inevitably serious expression, and the two children, adept at reading moods, remained very quiet.
Until they were nearly back at Beijing Station, the area ahead was a plaza; due to the crowd, Lu Cheng reduced his speed, and the little girl finally asked.
"Uncle, are we going to look for dad?"
Lu Cheng replied offhand, "Still thinking about finding dad, huh? What's your father's name?"
The little girl suddenly fell silent, sitting on the crossbar with a bewildered expression, as if she were trying hard to remember.
After a long while, the little girl shook her head and said, "I don't know…"
After holding it in for so long just to say 'I don't know,' Lu Cheng found it rather amusing; it seemed the children's father truly hadn't spent much time with them.
Lu Cheng promptly said, "You see, you both don't even know your father's name, how can I take you to find him? So it's best to honestly wait for your family to come and pick you up; I'll now help you make a phone call…"
But before he could finish speaking, the handlebars jolted, and the little girl tumbled down.
"Sister, sister ran away…" the little boy shouted anxiously from behind.
Lu Cheng was angry; fortunately the crowd forced him to ride slowly, yet the crowd also made him uneasy.
If they were to get lost, he'd be held responsible; if the family arrived and demanded the children, and it turned out to be a difficult person, it would be a hassle.
Lu Cheng quickly stopped his bicycle and said, "You stay right there, don't run off…"
The little girl ignored him, darting into the most crowded places; Lu Cheng, angry, could only push his bicycle and pursue from behind.
He chased all the way to the department store entrance, and only then exhaled in relief, as the little girl had already slipped into the store.
As long as she was inside, it was among familiar people, and Lu Cheng no longer feared losing her.
"Hey hey hey, whose child is this? Why are they running around? Get them out quickly, what if they get hurt?"
It was Zhao Bin shouting, still dressed in those flashy Bell‑bottom Pants.
"Binzi, grab that child."
"Lu Cheng? You're back?" Zhao Bin had just reached to grab when, after saying an extra line, the little girl slipped beneath the shelf.
"Hey, whose child is this?"
Lu Cheng lifted the little boy down, secured his bicycle, and said, "Oh, I brought him back; where did he run off to?"
Zhao Bin pointed at the shelf: "He's down there… you brought him back? Where did you pick him up, so cheap! Could it be your out‑of‑wedding child? You really are just like that."
Lu Cheng had no time to explain, nor the leisure to make jokes.
He crouched under the shelf, reaching to grab the child, but the little girl, as if afraid her family would come to take her, stubbornly remained inside.
Lu Cheng couldn't reach; the little girl stayed hidden, and when he turned his head, the little boy had also slipped inside.
Lu Cheng was so angry he was about to overturn the shelf, when Lu Ying walked over.
"What are you doing, can't you see the shop is busy? You knocked over the shelf; how are we supposed to sell goods…"
"It's not, sis, there's a child…" Lu Cheng waved his hand: "Alright, alright, sis, could you watch them for a moment? These are two children who got lost on the train; I still have some matters back at the squad."
After saying that, Lu Cheng left. Lu Ying noticed the two children and said, "Hey, why are you dumping the kids on me? I'm busy."
"I'll be back in a moment," Lu Cheng replied, noting that with his sister looking after them, he needn't worry about them getting lost.
After returning to the squad, Lu Cheng went straight to the captain's office.
Director Tang Qiusheng was seated there, handling routine matters.
Seeing Lu Cheng enter, Tang Qiusheng waved his hand, set aside his work: "Xiao Lu, your return is timely; your Captain Lei is ill, you must know about it, and there are some matters I need to discuss with you thoroughly…"
Work matters are certainly important, but now we must first resolve the two children's issue before Lu Cheng can focus his energy on work.
"Director Tang, I'll make a call first…" Lu Cheng gave a brief account of the children's matter.
Tang Qiusheng then gestured for him to call immediately; even if work is urgent, nothing outweighs the children.
After dialing the Hasi Sub‑bureau, Director He answered.
"Hello, Director He, what exactly is being said over there? I'm almost dying of worry; you don't know how troublesome these two children are. Get their family to come and pick them up quickly; they're currently at our Beijing Station."
Director He laughed into the microphone: "Chief Lu, thank you for your effort. I asked; it's perfect that you brought them to Beijing Station, their family needs to go to the Capital City for business, and can pick them up on the way."
Lu Cheng furrowed his brows: "How many days will it take? The children are so young; they can't stay at the Railway Bureau forever."
"Ah, this isn't easy to say, but it'll definitely be done quickly; just be more careful."
Thinking about having to look after the child for a few more days, Lu Cheng nearly got a splitting headache; he wanted to say something, but found there was nothing to say.
Pushing now won't help; Ha City is so far away, and it takes time for the child's parents to rush over, so we can only wait.
