Chapter 560: Who Exactly Is the Children

~7 min read 1,266 words

The little girl sitting on the crossbar in front of the bicycle stuck out her head and recognized the vehicle at a glance.

"It's Grandpa's car, Guoguo… Grandpa's coming to pick me up…"

The little girl shouted, tumbled down from the bicycle, and ran toward the jeep.

At that moment, a young comrade stepped out of the driver's seat; Lu Cheng recognized him vaguely—it was the driver who had previously driven for Lin Zhenfeng.

The little girl clearly recognized him too, and with her short legs she leapt into the driver's arms.

"Uncle Gao…"

The driver surnamed Gao scooped the little girl up: "Ha ha, Yao Yao, you're really bold, even daring to climb onto a train, and you brought your brother to Capital City. When you get home, be ready to get a beating."

The little girl shook her head: "Hmm~ not me, not me…"

"You still won't admit it, huh? You're always the boldest; it wasn't your brother's idea anyway…"

Driver Gao gave the little girl's nose a quick pinch, and when Lu Cheng came over pushing his bicycle, the little girl tumbled down again.

"Uncle Gao, this is Uncle Lu, the one who takes care of me and Guoguo; you need to give him money…"

The little girl still remembered that.

"Uncle knows," Driver Gao said, scratching the little girl's head, then lifted the little boy off the bicycle.

"You two get in the car and wait."

After the two children climbed into the car, Driver Gao proactively shook hands with Lu Cheng.

"Lu Jingzhang, we've met before."

"Hello."

At that moment, another comrade stepped down from the passenger seat; Lu Cheng thought it might be Lin Zhenfeng or Lin Qingyan, but it wasn't.

With a brief introduction from Driver Gao, it turned out he was also a driver.

"Director Lin learned that the two children were with Lu Jingzhang, feared causing you trouble, and arranged for us to take turns driving them here around the clock."

So that's why they arrived so quickly; Lu Cheng had originally expected it would take two or three days under normal circumstances.

Lu Cheng parked his bicycle and went to open the door: "You've had a hard journey; come in, have some tea, rest for two days before heading back."

Seeing the children safe, Lu Cheng thought there was no need to rush back.

But Driver Gao hurriedly said, "No need to trouble you, Lu Jingzhang; Director Lin is quite worried about the two children, we need to head back immediately."

Speaking so, Driver Gao unloaded a pile of gifts from the car: "Lu Jingzhang, thank you for looking after the two children; Director Lin instructed us to make sure you accept them."

Lu Cheng wasn't interested in the gifts; he glanced at the car and, through the window, saw only the two drivers, no one from the Lin family.

Not even the children's mother, Lin Qingyan, was present.

"Lu Jingzhang…"

Lu Cheng lowered his gaze: "Oh, you don't need to be formal; those two children rode my train, that's my job. Take the items back with you."

"No, no, no, everything must be accounted for; if you don't take them, I won't be able to report back."

Seeing Driver Gao insist on leaving the gifts, even placing them at the doorway, Lu Cheng didn't want to entangle himself over this.

Right now there was a more important matter, the lingering question in Lu Cheng's mind these past days.

"Comrade, why did no one from the Lin family come? I'm hesitant to hand the children over to you to take away."

After setting the gifts down, Driver Gao stood in front of the car and smiled.

"Lu Jingzhang, you know me, the children know me; I've been driving for Director Lin, and you're a railway police officer—I couldn't abduct the children in front of a police officer, could I?"

Lu Cheng laughed along: "It's also because I'm afraid something might happen to the children; don't mind, I just thought the mother should have come."

Driver Gao added, "Oh, Miss Lin was supposed to come along, worried about the children, but the office has been too busy these days. I promised Miss Lin I'd safely bring the children back, so she didn't come."

He deliberately asked two questions; the driver's explanations were flawless, yet Lu Cheng still felt it was a bit forced.

Is it because the children are with him? He doesn't want to meet him, so he didn't come?

Or perhaps, the children are with him, Lin Qingyan wanted to come, but Yu Wanrong prevented her?

Lu Cheng leaned more toward the latter reason.

"Lu Jingzhang, I still need to thank you, these past days…"

Lu Cheng's mind was a mess and he didn't want to hear such politeness: "You don't need to be formal."

Driver Gao opened his mouth, paused, then said, "Alright, Lu Jingzhang, we have to rush back immediately, we won't stay longer here; we must set off now."

As Driver Gao prepared to board, that departure would close off any chance to ask his lingering question.

"Wait a moment, comrade…"

Driver Gao turned around: "Lu Jingzhang, any other instructions? Rest assured, knowing you're in charge, I'll take good care of the two children on the road, and once we arrive I'll report their safety to you."

Lu Cheng nodded and deliberately said, "These two children came to Capital City looking for their father; I can see they miss him a lot. Since they're here, won't you take them to see him?"

While speaking, Lu Cheng carefully observed the driver's expression.

His mother had once said that if the two children resembled him in his youth, he could pretend not to care outwardly and fool his mother, but deep down he still had this doubt.

Although no one from the Lin family had arrived, this comrade surnamed Gao was Lin Zhenfeng's dedicated driver, so he would certainly be aware of any Lin family matters.

But such a question couldn't be asked directly, so he deliberately hinted at it while watching the driver's reaction.

The driver, however, remained calm, replying without any hesitation just as before.

"Oh, we do want to bring them to see him, but we've already arranged in advance; the children's father is on a mission, he's a pilot, and it's hard to meet him normally…"

Having reached this point, there was no need to ask further.

What can be confirmed is that, contrary to his mother's assumption, the two children have no relation to him.

The children have a father, and indeed he is a pilot.

Somehow Lu Cheng felt a slight sense of loss, but overall he offered more blessings than anything.

"So Miss Lin married quite early," Lu Cheng muttered unconsciously, but Driver Gao replied seriously.

"Yes, Lu Jingzhang, after Director Lin was transferred to Ha City, we started looking for a son‑in‑law."

As if waiting for Lu Cheng to keep asking, Driver Gao stood there, his body perfectly straight.

Having asked all the questions, Lu Cheng saw the situation and could only say, "Alright, Comrade, since you don't wish to stay and rest, I won't stay either. Safe travels."

"Don't worry, Lu Jingzhang." Driver Gao finished speaking, about to get into the car, when the little girl suddenly ran down.

"Uncle Gao, we aren't leaving…"

Driver Gao, somewhat helpless, crouched down and coaxed, "Listen, Yao Yao, grandpa and grandma, and even your mother are all worried about you, waiting for you at home…"

Before he could finish speaking, the little girl ran straight to Lu Cheng.
