Chapter 83: The Past of Three Team Members
Lu Cheng stormed into the conference room, just as Wang Fengshi, who had just delivered the documents, walked out.
"Hey Group Leader Lu, are you done getting to know each other? How are the new members?"
Lu Cheng replied irritably, "Not great. I want to see Captain Lei and have the members swapped out."
Wang Fengshi's mind was crystal clear, but he still asked, "Huh, why replace them? Aren't the new members good?"
"What a load of crap. I thought Captain Lei left me some Elite Members, but it turned out to be this! All crooked melons and broken dates—either idiots or imbeciles, not a single normal person."
Wang Fengshi sighed, "In that case, just tell me here. You must never say it in front of Captain Lei, otherwise he might dare to shoot you dead with a gun, and no one could stop him."
Seeing Wang Fengshi's solemn face, Lu Cheng was startled and instantly realized that these three abnormal members seemed to have some connection with Captain Lei Zhan Ge.
"Director Wang, who exactly are those three? How can such members serve as Train Police? They're either too tall or too short, and one has a messed‑up mind; if passengers see them, they'll think our Railway Bureau is a shelter."
"Of course, finding people who meet my high standards is difficult, but we can't lower the standards that much either!"
Wang Fengshi smiled, "Group Leader Lu, don't be so anxious. Come, let me formally introduce them to you."
Standing in the corridor, Wang Fengshi first pointed at the tall figure not far away.
"His name is Zhao Jinzhu, his father once fought alongside Captain Lei. During a reconnaissance mission he was unfortunately captured alive by the enemy; even after enduring inhuman torture, he never revealed a single piece of our intelligence, and was finally brutally killed, his head tossed onto our position."
His mother was a country woman who fell ill and died.
Jin Zhu was still a child then, fostered by a kind relative.
Wang Fengshi then pointed at another person.
"That one is named Chang Jinbu, his father also served under Captain Lei and once rose to Platoon Leader, but he was unfortunately killed in a mission covering a large force's withdrawal."
His mother was a battlefield medic who was tragically killed by enemy machine‑gun fire during a relocation mission.
At the time she was eight months pregnant; the mad enemy slit open her belly and tossed it on the ground. The child was lucky—soldiers retrieved it and miraculously revived it, but being premature left it short‑statured.
Wang Fengshi pointed at the last person.
"There's also Niu Da Kui, whose father shielded Captain Lei from gunfire and was unfortunately killed."
When Da Kui was eight, he ran a high fever; a barefoot doctor gave the wrong medicine, causing Da Kui's brain development to halt, forever stuck at an eight‑year‑old IQ.
"All three are now orphans. After the war ended, life gradually improved. Captain Lei, after many twists and extensive inquiries over the years, finally located the three lost orphans and took them in to raise himself."
As Wang Fengshi slowly recounted those past events, the scenes of raging artillery seemed as fresh as if they had occurred yesterday.
Lu Cheng's chest rose and fell as he listened, his heart stirred so much that he was momentarily speechless.
It turned out the three were Children of Martyrs.
No wonder Captain Lei Zhan Ge, a Deputy Department-level officer, whose salary shouldn't be low, lives so frugally—he's used the same face‑washing towel for who knows how many years and can't bear to replace it.
So they are indeed the three children raised as comrades.
"Director Wang, they are Children of Martyrs; I respect them, but that's not why I want them. They are fundamentally unsuitable for Train Police work."
Wang Fengshi, as if not hearing him, muttered to himself, "Captain Lei has never given anyone a backdoor in his life, except for these three children."
"They are a bit abnormal, and precisely because of that, Captain Lei wants them to acquire a skill. Captain Lei is old; he can only support them for so many years, eventually they must survive on their own."
"Captain Lei has no great wish in life; he only hopes to see these three children marry and have children normally, so that when his time comes, he can close his eyes in peace."
Lu Cheng inhaled, "But…"
Wang Fengshi looked over, "These three children are unfortunate; because Captain Lei values and trusts you, he handed them over to you."
"You don't know, at first the three were doing odd jobs in the logistics department. When they were bullied, Captain Lei gave the bully a good beating. Captain Lei should have already held a Chief Hall-level position, but because of that incident he voluntarily demoted himself to become the Railway Bureau commander, to guard the railway lines."
Lu Cheng was speechless; that old man truly was a man of feeling.
Lu Cheng sighed, "Director Wang, you can't morally blackmail me. I don't have the ability to lead those three; you should have Captain Lei swap them for me."
Wang Fengshi instead laughed, "You do understand Captain Lei; his decisions are not easily changed."
Lu Cheng, who hates being threatened, said, "Then I'll return to the Xizhimen main office."
Wang Fengshi laughed even louder, "As I said, Captain Lei's decisions are not easily altered; you can't go back."
Lu Cheng, full of resentment, muttered, "Looks like I'm on a pirate ship."
"No, it's a thief's train, haha."
After laughing, Wang Fengshi patted Lu Cheng, "Don't be angry. I won't mention Liu Jian'an; the other three aren't without any merits. For example, Zhao Jinzhu has long legs and runs fast, so catching criminals will be a breeze for him."
"And Chang Jinbu—what a great name, always hoping for advancement every day."
Lu Cheng was speechless; he had no merits, and could hardly fabricate any, but the name did sound pleasant.
"As for Da Kui, although his mind has issues, he always follows orders. If you tell him to go east, he will never go west, even if it's wrong."
"Moreover, he has boundless strength. Let me tell you, once the locomotive malfunctioned near the platform; Da Kui stepped in, pulling carriage after carriage, hauling them for two kilometers, using his shoulders to pull them onto the platform."
Lu Cheng was astonished; a single carriage weighs at least twenty tons.
A normal adult male can sustain only about a hundred kilograms of pulling force, so Da Kui must be incredibly strong.
Lu Cheng shook his head; such a person is not suitable for taking a wife.
Wang Fengshi patted his shoulder, "So you see, you've hit the jackpot; Captain Lei definitely left you good members."
Lu Cheng, helpless, thought that at this point he had to accept it, even if he didn't want to.
"Alright, alright, Director Wang, you don't have to keep saying it. I can't lead them anyway; they're Children of Martyrs, what else can I do? Just be more patient."
Wang Fengshi brightened, "That's right. Also, since you've started work, the Small Group Assessment has already begun; tomorrow you'll lead your squad on a mission to the Jingguang Line."
"What, Jingguang Line?" Lu Cheng suddenly recalled the dream from yesterday; Jiang Mengmeng was on the Jingguang Line, so I have to ask her for leather shoes.
If she refuses, it won't be like in the dream where I'd slap her, right?
"Director Wang, could you assign me a different line?"
Wang Fengshi refused, "All other Train Service Lines have been scheduled and cannot be rearranged at short notice; that's the rule. Any squad that later fails to follow the regulations will be penalized with point deductions."
"What, point deductions?" Lu Cheng shook his head.
With only these few members, it seems the Police Chief Position is out of his reach.
From the conference room window, seeing Lu Cheng return to the Grand Courtyard, Lei Zhan Ge smoked a cigarette and, for once, managed a smile.
Lu Cheng stood in front of the squad, sometimes looking up at the big one, sometimes looking down at the monkey.
In just a moment, his neck went sour from being raised and shaken.
"All four have it, stand at attention! Da Kui, step forward!"
Lu Cheng flicked his wrist; today he wants to see how strong Niu Da Kui can be.
