Chapter 14: The Toy Bear Moved!

~6 min read 1,160 words

Saying this, Xiao Wan also lifted Zhang Yi up with both hands, looking utterly delighted.

Standing in front of Lin Xiaowan was a woman.

She wore a black dress, with a silver necklace hanging around her smooth, pale goose-neck, her movements elegant and beautiful.

She bent her back and waist, her long hair sliding down from her shoulders.

Hearing this, she examined Zhang Yi curiously—the toy bear's fur was glossy and crimson, exceedingly cute.

"By the way, Auntie, the toy bear sings songs for me too."

Xiao Wan stroked the toy bear, and without even pressing a button, Zhang Yi's childhood rhyme began to play.

"The stars in the sky shed tears, the roses on the ground wither, insects fly."

Though it was a childhood rhyme, at this moment it felt eerily mournful, as if a chilling, bone-deep wind had arrived with the song.

This woman was Lin Qing's close friend, her best friend.

Her name was Xu Jiajia, a livestreamer, and the only person Xiao Wan knew besides her mother and father.

It was strange—the system had brought them here.

How odd, this toy bear has no buttons at all—how did Xiao Wan make it sing? Xu Jiajia stood up and glanced around, curious: "Xiao Wan, why are you here alone? Are you waiting for me? Where's your mom?"

As she spoke, she pulled out her phone and called Lin Qing.

God knows how long Xiao Wan has been here.

As she dialed, she muttered: "That unreliable woman—leaving her daughter here and running off somewhere."

Didi-di—

The phone rang for a while, but no one answered.

"Where's your mom?" Xu Jiajia bent down and patted Xiao Wan's head.

Xiao Wan smiled and shook her head.

Seeing the child's expression, Xu Jiajia sighed, taking her hand: "Forget it, come with Auntie for now—your mom's probably gone looking for your dad again, such a flake!"

She knew Lin Xiaowan's situation all too well.

Including that damn Many—he'd advised Lin Qing to give up, saying she could easily find someone else given her looks and age.

But Lin Qing refused to listen, insisting on going back to him, and that's how Xiao Wan came to be.

After the child was born, he gave money only occasionally and never paid any attention to her.

This caused Lin Qing to develop depression; she recently returned from traveling abroad with Xu Jiajia.

Since returning, she's become like this.

But Xu Jiajia was used to it—Xiao Wan had once spent more time with her than with her mother.

Company colleagues nearly thought she was Xu Jiajia's own child.

Holding Xiao Wan's hand: "Xiao Wan, Auntie's going to the company—remember that place you went to before? Want to come with me?"

Xiao Wan paused, then looked down and asked seriously: "Toy Bear, are we going to the company—is that okay?"

Zhang Yi naturally welcomed this—the system's mission hadn't refreshed yet.

The only way to quickly gain Fear Value was surely through the internet, or Ghostly Killing.

The latter carried some risk and required waiting for an opportunity; the former was very simple.

Hmm? Xiao Wan was already over seven years old—she was a half-grown child.

She should have basic common sense—why would she ask a toy bear if it was okay? Could she have developed depression?

Thinking of this, Xu Jiajia couldn't help cursing: "That bastard Many really isn't human—when your mom comes back, I'll take you to the Hospital together."

Then, holding Xiao Wan and the toy bear, they went to the livestreaming company.

The company was large, located in a commercial building.

Their company spanned five or six floors.

After returning to the livestream room, Xiao Wan sat on the sofa behind, hugging the toy bear.

Xu Jiajia even ordered Xiao Wan a serving of fried chicken, while she prepared to begin livestreaming: "Hey Jiajia, why's there a little girl and a toy bear behind you? Is that your best friend's daughter?"

"Probably—last time I saw this little girl, she looked as cute as a Ceramic Doll."

"The little girl is so adorable, and the toy bear is well-behaved too—they look perfect sitting together."

"Look how cute the child is—she even feeds the toy bear!"

"Hahaha, little girl, the toy bear doesn't eat—it's dead, it can't eat anything."

After the livestream started, Xiao Wan and the toy bear behind her became a huge hit, bringing Xu Jiajia a surge of viewership.

But soon, someone noticed that the toy bear seemed familiar.

Xu Jiajia turned back to look at Xiao Wan behind her, then sighed: "Ah, the little girl probably has depression—she's imagining the toy bear as a living friend. After the stream ends, I'll ask her mom and take her to the Hospital."

"Poor child, stuck with such a deadbeat dad!"

She muttered this, then continued livestreaming.

After only a short while, the time reached eight o'clock in the evening.

Suddenly—

Crack—

The lights on the entire floor went out—power failure!

Xu Jiajia quickly turned on her backup phone and internet connection.

"Xiao Wan, don't be afraid—it's just a power outage, the electricity should come back soon."

Xiao Wan sat there as if nothing had happened, smiling and shaking her head.

Her expression was identical to the toy bear's—Xu Jiajia felt a chill of fear.

She shook her head—why was she afraid of Xiao Wan?!

She continued sitting in the livestream room; the stream used her data, and soon a staff member arrived.

The staff member briefly explained the situation, and since Xu Jiajia had about ten minutes left until her livestream mission, she simply picked up her phone and walked with them.

She livestreamed as she led them downstairs.

They were livestreaming on the fourth floor, so walking down wasn't too tiring.

At this hour, the company's employees were either still livestreaming and waiting for calls, or had already left.

So there was no one in the stairwell.

The corridor had green emergency lighting, and a light breeze blew through.

Instantly, goosebumps rose on Xu Jiajia's arms.

Normally, she would wait for someone or for a call, but today Xiao Wan was with her.

"Are you scared, Xiao Wan?" Xu Jiajia held Xiao Wan's hand and stepped down the stairs one by one.

Xiao Wan shook her head: "Little Bear says, don't be afraid—he's here!"

Hearing this, Xu Jiajia glanced at Little Bear.

Little Bear smiled, his expression so eerie it sent a shiver through her; she kept reassuring herself: it's just a teddy bear, it can't possibly talk—it's all Xiao Wan's imagination! She stepped down in her high heels, but after only a few steps, her foot missed the stair.

She tumbled straight down halfway down the stairs.

"Ah—"

Her phone crashed into chaos, its light barely visible.

The livestream audience panicked, frantically typing questions about what happened.

Then.

In the video, Xiao Wan's face appeared—she crouched before Xu Jiajia, hugging Little Bear.

Little Bear moved—slowly, it turned its head.
