Chapter 24

~7 min read 1,307 words

Section Chief Duan hurriedly stopped him: "Wait, Director Gao, there's still one day of pre-internship training—these interns won't go to departments until tomorrow."

Director Gao looked impatient: "Why wasn't this rule in place last year?"

He had one attending physician and one resident physician who suffered food poisoning from seafood barbecue and need to rest in Digestive Internal Medicine today and tomorrow.

Yang Fang walked up to him and smiled: "Director Gao, there's no way around it—it's a new hospital rule. Performance in the training lecture hall will be recorded in their final internship assessment."

Seeing Gao Cheng didn't respond, she continued: "Director Gao, your emergency department demands high hands-on skills."

She raised her eyebrows and glanced at Wang Chuan, smiling: "This student—I'm not targeting you. Director Gao, what if you encounter a rookie who can only recite textbooks and doesn't even know how to use a defibrillator? It'll only delay your emergency work."

Gao Cheng patted Wang Chuan's shoulder and turned to leave: "Kid, from the first glance, I like you. Work hard—don't let me down."

He thought to himself: All the other interns are assigned—only you're left. Even if you're terrible, at least you can write a case record.

"Follow me—gather in the Training Lecture Hall on the eleventh floor, next to the Medical Affairs Section."

Yang Fang said, gesturing for Wang Chuan to follow him.

After walking only a few steps, "Wang Chuan." Pei Nanli walked over. "Teacher Yang, hello, I'm Pei Nanli."

Yang Fang sized up the beautiful intern before him: "Pei Nanli, at last week's banquet, I met your father with Dean Yang. Your father praised your intelligence—you ranked in the top five in all four final exams."

Wang Chuan internally laughed: Top five for four years? Yang Fang's emotional intelligence is impressive.

I've been first place in three semesters and second place in five semesters over four years.

Five-Year Clinical Medicine requires studying over twenty million characters of textbooks—without near-photographic memory, I couldn't possibly work part-time at a bar.

But you, Yang Fang, we're enemies meeting again—fierce and bitter.

In my past life, Yang Fang sabotaged me, causing my internship assessment score to miss the top three—I didn't get assigned to Mingzhou First People's Hospital.

After I started working at Xinzhou People's Hospital, I learned that shortly after graduation, Yang Fang married Pei Nanli. Yang Fang's uncle, Vice Dean Yang Guohua, later became Dean smoothly.

More than a decade later, Wang Chuan treated former classmates to dinner and heard Pei Nanli's father had been arrested—Yang Fang applied for divorce the next day and married a leader's daughter a month later.

Now I see: back then, Yang Fang didn't just want Pei Nanli's beauty—he wanted her father's power in the health system.

Hearing Yang Fang ask Pei Nanli: "Are you classmates with this Wang Chuan?"

"Report, Teacher Yang Fang—she's my girlfriend!"

At these words, Yang Fang's face changed drastically, but he quickly regained composure: "Oh, during internship, studies must come first." He turned and left.

Pei Nanli lifted her gaze, her delicate eyebrows furrowed: "What are you talking about?!"

Wang Chuan watched Yang Fang's awkward expression and felt a quiet thrill.

This life, knowing Yang Fang is a scoundrel early lets me prepare in advance.

'Should I lure him into investing in futures? Make him lose everything.'

"Why are you grinning like an idiot? Don't leave yet—I need to talk to you."

Pei Nanli's cold voice interrupted Wang Chuan's daydream—he thought Wang Chuan was laughing at her.

"I don't have time." Wang Chuan walked away. Then, after a few steps, he remembered Yang Fang was supposed to marry Pei Nanli.

He turned back, looked at Pei Nanli: "I have time."

Training Lecture Hall, eleventh floor.

Wang Chuan noticed other seats held interns from Mingzhou Medical College—quite a few of them.

Yang Fang stood at the front podium, speaking confidently: "Quiet down. Now distributing the Internship Manual—each department requires a graduation assessment; those who fail cannot rotate to the next department."

"Also, this thin booklet—group leaders, distribute the Internship Syllabus. Internship lasts fifty-three weeks, covering overall clinical requirements, schedules, and rotation expectations for each department."

Wang Chuan took his copy and flipped through it: only after passing all rotation departments can you take the Final Internship Assessment—Learning Attitude counts for 25 points, Clinical Basic Skills for 30, Professional Assessment for 45.

Back then, Yang Fang tampered with his Learning Attitude score—so Wang Chuan raised his hand.

"Student Wang Chuan, what do you want to ask?"

"What exactly does 'Learning Attitude' mean? Who gives us the score?"

Yang Fang replied: "It includes Discipline, Medical Ethics and Style, Learning Initiative, etc. —scored by the Teaching Office under the Medical Affairs Section."

Wang Chuan felt the Learning Attitude scoring was too subjective—he hadn't noticed this last life; this time, he'd find out who ran the Teaching Office. Last time, they gave him only ten points.

"This afternoon, we'll watch the Clinical Basic Operation Video, then take an exam. Review Theoretical Knowledge in your dorms."

"What? We have to take an exam too?!"

A chorus of groans rose from the interns—clinical skills for medical students weren't emphasized as much as they'd be in ten years, mainly because resources weren't allocated to every student.

But medical students who graduated before 2005 were jokingly called the "old waves" who reaped all the benefits by today's students and young physicians.

Wang Chuan's cohort, after graduating with a bachelor's, could take the Practicing Physician Qualification Examination after working one year in the hospital to obtain the Physician Qualification Certificate.

After registration, they'd receive the Physician Practice Certificate and could begin practicing.

Ten years from now, the country will implement the Standardized Training system for resident physicians, requiring all new clinical physicians to complete Standardized Training.

Bachelor's graduates must complete thirty-six months of rotation at one of hundreds of state-approved training bases and pass the exit assessment to earn the Standardized Training Certificate.

Those who fail Standardized Training cannot register to practice in second-tier or higher hospitals—like Internal Medicine, Surgery—and their Title Promotion is restricted, such as applying for Attending Physician.

At that moment, Cao Ying, a teacher from the Medical Affairs Section beside Yang Fang, spoke: "Now, everyone come up to collect your Meal Cards—the hospital has recharged two hundred yuan per month for each intern. Interns, go to the canteen precisely at 11:30 for lunch."

A fat intern from Mingzhou Medical College raised his hand: "Teacher Yang, what if we're assisting in surgery and miss mealtime?"

"I don't eat, I get hypoglycemia—I'll faint, and then you might have to operate on me yourself!"

Laughter erupted. Wang Chuan loudly added: "Don't worry—if you get hypoglycemia, no surgery needed—the hospital has plenty of glucose, you'll bounce right back."

Cao Ying said: "If surgery runs past mealtime, someone will collect meals by headcount and deliver them to the rest area outside the Surgery Room."

"And there'll be more meat dishes—everyone knows surgery consumes huge energy."

Hospital Canteen.

Wang Chuan, Li Wei, and Wu De, the chubby intern from Mingzhou Medical College he'd just met, ate together.

"Wang Chuan, weren't you saying you had time?"

Pei Nanli walked over with her meal tray.

Suddenly, a sickeningly sweet voice rang out, "Wang Chuan, Wang Chuan, it's me, Lu Na."

Everyone looked up to see a pretty Nurse walking over carrying several lunch boxes, smiling to reveal two cute dimples.

"Wang Chuan, I'm in Pediatrics. Here, this Mobile Phone of yours is really nice; I'll treat you to a meal another day. I'm off to deliver the food first."

"Good luck!"

Pei Nanli saw the Sony Ericsson T618 in Lu Na's hand, with a small doll charm hanging from it.

His mindset exploded; had Wang Chuan sold the Sony Ericsson Phone he meant to give her to this little Nurse, or had he given it to her?!
