Chapter 36: I Am the Intern Wang Chuan
Li Wei grumbled, "Can't I go pee right now? Whoever doesn't believe me, come watch me use the toilet."
Nurse Shang Yan, who had just scolded Li Wei and had five or six years of experience, completely ignored his act, frowning and snapping, "Little corpse, you wanna die? So tiny, not worth a look."
This time, Li Wei didn't retaliate; he dashed out of Pediatrics, heading to the dorm to find Wang Chuan.
Shang Yan gave him a disdainful look, "I'm going to the rest room to find Head Nurse Wang—have her assign that intern to us as an assistant. If he's useless, at least he can be a pretty face."
Wang Chuan walked into the Pediatrics corridor and ran into Shang Yan. "Where's the office? Dr. Shen told me to wait for her there."
Shang Yan's eyes lit up—this handsome, sunlit male doctor must be from Surgery or Orthopedics.
She didn't recognize Wang Chuan; he wasn't wearing an Intern badge on his chest.
Dr. Shen Mianshuang was Mingzhou First Hospital's number-one beautiful doctor; many single male doctors often came looking for her.
Shang Yan was used to it.
So she gave a knowing smile and pointed, "There—the office is over there!"
She turned and walked toward the rest room, her mind churning: 'Today's the fifth one to come looking for Dr. Shen.'
In the Pediatrics office, Wang Chuan saw a female doctor. "Dr. Xu, hello. Dr. Shen told me to wait for her here."
Earlier, Dr. Shen Mianshuang had been taking Wang Chuan to Pediatrics when she received a call and told him to go ahead.
"Who are you?"
"I'm the intern, Wang Chuan."
Dr. Xu Ling was Wang Chuan's Mentor Teacher during his internship in Pediatrics in his past life. She was divorced; her child had failed the middle school entrance exam and she was desperately scrambling to get him into a key high school through connections, distracting her from her hospital duties.
"Aren't your interns Li Wei?"
"I'm an Intern from Emergency."
Xu Ling replied, "Oh," then buried her head in her work.
In Mingzhou First Hospital, 2004, Pediatrics Night Shift ran from 8 p. m. to 8 a. m. —one doctor assigned to Emergency, one to the wards. Today, Shen Mianshuang, on her first day in Pediatrics, was assigned the night shift.
During the day, Shen Mianshuang had accompanied Head Doctor Liu on rounds, familiarizing herself with every child in the ward.
She was then assigned to manage seven patients—one-third of the total. Head Doctor Liu said she learned quickly, was young and single, so she should take on more.
The phone rang. Dr. Xu answered, her voice excited: "Xiao Xiao, you want to watch TV? How many days until the exam? Mommy, as soon as I finish shift, I'll come right back..."
Dr. Xu covered the phone's mouthpiece and said to Wang Chuan, "Wang Chuan, go outside and check if Dr. Shen's back yet."
Wang Chuan walked out of the office, headed down the corridor, stood at the entrance for a while, saw no one, and realized he didn't have Dr. Shen's phone number.
On his way back, he met Shang Yan and Head Nurse Wang. "Excuse me, do you have Dr. Shen Mianshuang's phone number?"
Shang Yan didn't wait for Head Nurse Wang to ask. She whispered, "Fifth one today looking for Dr. Shen."
Head Nurse Wang's face instantly lit up with gossip. "Dr. Shen's phone? Wait a sec."
She pulled out her phone and recited the number to Wang Chuan.
She was about to ask his name and department, but Wang Chuan said "Thank you" and was already walking away.
Head Nurse Wang reached the nurses' station and asked Shang Yan, "What intern? I'm dead tired."
Shang Yan explained again: an intern from Emergency was being pushed around, rumored to be handsome—better to transfer him to Pediatrics.
Head Nurse Wang frowned. "Shang Yan, you're ridiculous."
Only because Shang Yan was a relative of Vice Dean Yang Guohua did she dare make such a ridiculous request.
"Sister Wang, isn't your husband the Teaching Office Director? Just swap him—no problem, right? She's not even here these two days."
Head Nurse Wang knew who Shang Yan meant—Lu Na. Since Lu Na arrived last year, her looks and age had overshadowed her completely.
Pediatrics had no single male doctors; whenever doctors from other departments came to Pediatrics, as long as Lu Na was there, she became a forgotten little nurse in the corner.
"You guys bring in an intern like Li Wei—useless to us, useless to Dr. Shen—they're no help. I'll think about it."
Head Nurse Wang was weighing whether to grant Shang Yan this favor—after all, Yang Guohua oversaw Medical Affairs, and under him was the Teaching Office.
If Shang Yan were like Yang Fang—a direct blood relative, nephew or niece—she'd have no hesitation telling her husband.
When Yang Guohua came to Pediatrics, he called Shang Yan by name directly; he didn't seem like some distant relative.
At that moment, Wang Chuan walked into the office. "Dr. Xu, Dr. Shen replied—she's coming right back. She was just with Dr. Han in Emergency Pediatrics."
Dr. Xu glanced at the time, irritated—it was already 8 p. m. The shift change had been completed half an hour ago, but Shen Mianshuang had asked her to stay late for half an hour to wait for Wang Chuan.
Suddenly, a cry echoed down the corridor: "Doctor! Doctor!"
They heard Shang Yan's voice: "Why are you screaming? This is a ward—why didn't you go to Emergency?"
Wang Chuan followed Dr. Xu to the nurses' station and saw an elderly woman holding a little girl.
Shang Yan said, "Dr. Xu, five-year-old girl, temperature just measured at 37.7°C."
The grandmother rushed to Dr. Xu. "Doctor, Emergency said it was just a common illness and sent us here. Doctor, please check my granddaughter—she's had a fever for three days. She says her head itches—look, she's scratched her scalp raw."
Wang Chuan saw Dr. Xu part the girl's hair and spot a dark mole. Suddenly, Dr. Xu's phone rang again.
Dr. Xu told the grandmother, "It's fine—just a summer chill from sleeping too cold."
She turned and walked back to the office. Wang Chuan heard her whisper, "Mom, what's wrong? What? If I don't let her watch TV, Xiao Xiao's gonna jump out the window."
Dr. Xu's child was in ninth grade and so rebellious—probably because after the divorce, Dr. Xu was too busy in Pediatrics to spend time with her. Though the grandmother cared for her, the generational gap meant little help with schoolwork.
"Doctor, should we prescribe any medicine?"
Dr. Xu walked into the office, still on the phone, asking for medical history: "Madam, I'll write the prescription right away."
"Thank you, Dr. Xu." The grandmother finally saw Xu Ling's badge.
The door creaked open—Dr. Shen Mianshuang walked in. "Dr. Xu, sorry—I was just helping Dr. Han in Emergency Pediatrics."
Dr. Xu pointed at the girl. "Dr. Shen, five-year-old girl, low fever for three days—I've already prescribed medicine. I've got family business—I have to leave right away."
She hurriedly shrugged off her White Coat and walked out.
"You're Dr. Shen, right? Where's the pharmacy?"
Shen Mianshuang took the unsigned prescription, parted the girl's hair again, then signed her name on it.
And she said to Wang Chuan, "Wang Chuan, the little girl has fallen asleep; you hold her for this old woman, and take her to the pharmacy to pick up the medicine while you're at it."
"Doctor Shen, I am so grateful to you, and also to that Doctor Xu from just now. Tomorrow, my son will be taking my granddaughter home; if she were to fall ill while under my care, I would have a hard time explaining myself."
Tears welled up in the old woman's eyes.
Ding! As Wang Chuan picked up the sleeping little girl, 【Clinical Medical Insight】 unexpectedly triggered.
