Chapter 43: It's Really So Annoying
"Mom, I'm going to take a shower and sleep."
Pei Nanli went to her bedroom, grabbed some clothes, and walked into the bathroom.
Ning Hui walked into Pei Nanli's bedroom and saw the Sony TR3C notebook computer on the desk.
After finishing her shower, Pei Nanli walked into the bedroom and froze in surprise.
"Nannan, why are you still in contact with Fang Yuan?"
Pei Nanli's face changed instantly. "Mom, how could you check my email? This is personal privacy! I'm an adult. And you're a law professor!"
Ning Hui paid no heed to Pei Nanli's rapid-fire words and said slowly, "You forgot to close your laptop. When I went to close it, I just happened to glance at the sender's name with my peripheral vision; I didn't read the content of the email."
"That doesn't count as invading privacy."
"Four years ago, I stopped you from going abroad to study with Fang Yuan, and today I won't let you be together either." Read novels smoothly every day at 𝚝𝚝𝚔𝚜. 𝚝𝚠 anytime.
Pei Nanli frowned tightly and replied, "Right, I know you've despised him since childhood because Fang Yuan had poor grades in middle and high school."
Looking at the angry Pei Nanli, Ning Hui sighed: "Yes, my daughter is so smart and so beautiful; how could Fang Yuan possibly be worthy of her?"
Not daring to raise her voice too much in front of Ning Hui, Pei Nanli said stubbornly, "The level of one's education is not the sole standard for evaluating whether a person has ability."
"But there are plenty of people who have both high education and great ability. Given a choice, why wouldn't I choose someone like that? Fang Yuan just happened to appear by your side at that specific moment in time."
"You saw a meteor flash by and thought it illuminated the path of your life."
"In reality, it was just a falling meteor, not the Sun."
Feeling there was no need to argue with her mother, Pei Nanli turned on the air conditioner, lay down on the bed, and stopped speaking.
Ning Hui thought that time would dilute Pei Nanli's feelings.
After all, Jiangcheng University had not only the Medical School but also other majors with many outstanding male students; as long as their family backgrounds were good and they looked decent.
If Pei Nanli dated someone like that, she would not object.
In the current situation, to protect her daughter from harm, she could only tell her the real reason.
"Nannan, something will inevitably happen to Fang Yuan's family sooner or later, at the earliest this year, at the latest next year."
Hearing her mother's words, Pei Nanli emerged from under the thin quilt, her face filled with shock.
Four years ago, Fang Yuan's mother, Liu Qin, was promoted from Mingzhou City to Jiangcheng City. Her specific position seemed to be related to land, but Pei Nanli had never bothered to find out.
Did 'something happening to Fang Yuan's family' mean something happening to his mother?
Ning Hui continued speaking: "Deeds done leave traces behind; there is no escaping them." She knew Liu Qin, a capable and strong woman who sometimes treated the law as nonexistent, and had felt back then that trouble was inevitable.
A while ago, a friend at the Procuratorate had told her privately that there were many, many letters reporting Liu Qin, which had already attracted the attention of higher authorities.
"I heard that Fang Yuan's living expenses while studying abroad are very high, far beyond what a normal family within the system could afford."
"Go to sleep early, and remember to drink the warm milk." Ning Hui adjusted her glasses, turned around, and went back to sleep.
Pei Nanli wondered internally: If Fang Yuan's mother gets arrested, Fang Yuan would likely be implicated as well; would I still stay with him?
Should I go warn Fang Yuan? But my mother just reminded me that 'geese leave traces,' meaning there is already evidence.
If I go warn Fang Yuan and let them flee abroad, would I abandon my father and mother to follow Fang Yuan overseas?
Her head hurt terribly; this was not the future she had imagined.
It's really so annoying!
Wang Chuan returned to the dormitory, lay on the bed, and saw several unread text messages.
"Wang Chuan, I've arrived at the hotel."
"Have you gone back?"
"Haven't you gone back yet?"
"Are you asleep?"
Wang Chuan thought to himself, Could it be that just one afternoon of simulated dating made Lin Weiwei fall in love? He had done these same things for Pei Nanli, constantly sending messages, wanting to know Pei Nanli's whereabouts every moment.
Could it be simply because during the journey to Mingzhou, he chatted with her about stocks and economic views, causing her to suddenly change her mind? That turn was too fast. Is Lin Weiwei also a Reborn Person? Is that why they feel such mutual appreciation?
The mobile phone screen lit up again: "Go to sleep early; you need energy for work tomorrow."
Wang Chuan thought for a moment and typed: "Your 3,000 yuan top-up is insufficient; unable to reply to messages! The owner is already asleep."
He was grateful that Lin Weiwei had paid his Driving School Tuition for him and had rushed to the Heshu Branch Bureau late at night.
The mutual teasing words between them were merely a form of communication and did not mean the two of them intended to develop their relationship further.
Wang Chuan decided to use a text message to kindly remind her again that the dating behavior at Mingzhou University that afternoon was simply the result of him being paid to do a job.
He had worked in her Bar for four years; four years ago, what had she been doing? She had never shown any intention of dating him, treating him merely as a little brother, just an Employee.
Wang Chuan assumed Lin Weiwei's enthusiasm would cool down as time approached midnight.
'Without knowing why Lin Weiwei's attitude toward me has changed so drastically, I cannot allow a relationship that is not yet lovers to advance further.'
In the hotel, Lin Weiwei received Wang Chuan's reply and felt somewhat angry; she threw her mobile phone onto the floor, but a moment later, she got out of bed and picked it back up.
She began to reflect as well: Did I really regard Wang Chuan as a romantic partner?
From Mingzhou University to the Heshu Branch Bureau, I had been treating Wang Chuan as my boyfriend.
He worked under my watch for four years; for him to change direction so suddenly today, if it were me, I would be stunned too.
Do I truly like him?
Or is this just an extreme rebellious reaction because my mother wanted me to return to Hong Kong for a blind date today?
Or is it that after more than four years of ups and downs in the business world, I'm a bit tired and just want someone to rely on, a shoulder to lean on when I return to bed at night, someone to play with?
She pondered for half the night but found no answer.
Lin Weiwei decided to temporarily lose contact with Wang Chuan for a while.
It's really so annoying.
The famous Guoqing Temple that I originally planned to visit, I'll just go tomorrow.
Perhaps Buddha will give me an answer.
Wang Chuan saw that half an hour had passed without further reply from Lin Weiwei; he breathed a sigh of relief. "Finally, I can sleep in peace."
The screen lit up again: "Wang Chuan, are you asleep? I haven't yet thanked you for what happened this evening. Thank you."
"(*^▽^*)"
Wang Chuan read Pei Nanli's message, closed his eyes, and fell asleep; had it been the Wang Chuan of his previous life, he would surely have been so excited that he would have tossed and turned until dawn.
June 3, 2004, 7:00 in the morning.
"Nan Nan, we've arrived at the Hospital."
At the entrance of Mingzhou First Hospital, Ning Hui glanced at her daughter in the rearview mirror; she had noticed during breakfast that morning that her daughter's eyes were swollen, likely from crying all night.
'I wonder if she has already broken things off with Fang Yuan.'
Pei Nanli silently opened the car door and walked into the Hospital.
"You're on the night shift today; I'll bring you a late-night snack this Evening," Ning Hui said, rolling down the front passenger window to remind her.
Pei Nanli knew her mother had, since childhood, done everything possible to wrap her in protection, not allowing her to suffer even the slightest harm; was this a good thing, or a bad one?
Or was it as the books wrote: a child who has never fallen will never learn to walk.
Several Nurses approached; upon seeing Pei Nanli, they paused for a moment. Once they had walked a little farther away, they could not help but begin discussing the matter with great enthusiasm.
"Have you heard? About what happened last night in Respiratory Medicine..."
"It caused such a huge commotion; who doesn't know that a handsome Intern played the hero and saved a beauty, specifically saving this Pei Nanli?"
"Pei Nanli's father is the Bureau Chief of the Health Bureau."
"Why aren't you all discussing Director Tao Tao? He took a blow from a stick..."
