Chapter 48

~7 min read 1,226 words

At this moment, Attending Physician Zhang Yang had just finished the surgery and, upon hearing the Dean had arrived, hurried over.

He encountered Vice Dean Yang Guohua exiting the surgery room: "Zhang Yang, you're just in time. Go check—how did the surgery go?"

Then he added to the others at the door: "Director Wei, please let everyone go home for now."

Some from the Medical Affairs Section and other department directors voiced questions about whether today's safety inspection had ended.

Yang Guohua snapped: "Go back and wait for instructions."

When he re-entered the surgery room, Yang Guohua saw Zhang Yang, already sterilized, seated at Wang Chuan's station, performing what appeared to be skin suture removal.

At this moment, Director Wei Xing's face was dark with anger; fearing the patient might hear, he said nothing, but signaled for Wang Chuan to come over.

"Wang Chuan, you're finished. Even saving a life can't offset the hospital being burdened with a medical accident."

Yang Guohua secretly rejoiced.

Director Tao Tao, seeing the operation completed, felt a pang of regret: "What a pity—this intern with such a strong sense of justice."

Most anxious of all was Sun Ke, fully awake now, his eyes fixed intently on Zhang Yang, then glancing several times at Yang Guohua, hoping Yang would speak up for him later.

Zhang Yang saw Wang Chuan's vascular anastomosis and nerve repair—his skill was better than Sun Ke's under normal conditions.

"Director Wei, the surgery was a success. Recommend transferring the patient to the orthopedic ward immediately."

Director Wei Xing's grim expression eased: "Doctor Sun, write the postoperative medical advice and transfer this patient to the ward."

After the patient was taken away, the Dean instructed: "Wang Chuan, this Lin Rui, right? And Zhang Yang—you three come with me to the Emergency Department office."

Nurse Chang Min brought several bottles of Wahaha Purified Water from the nursing station and placed them before Director Wei Xing.

Director Wei drank over a hundred milliliters, then said: "Lin Rui, you speak first."

Lin Rui had participated in every stage of the replantation of amputated finger surgery just now.

Upon hearing "studied before morning rounds and in the afternoon," Director Wei's right eyelid twitched visibly; Lin Rui kept speaking until the end, confirming that Wang Chuan had performed the wound suturing.

"Zhang Yang, explain—why was Sun Ke assigned today? Didn't you notice his condition was poor?"

Director Wei's tone toward Zhang Yang softened slightly.

"Director Wei, I am at fault. Today's replantation involved a married couple—the husband severed two fingers, the wife one. The husband's case was more urgent; I was focused on planning his surgery."

"I didn't pay special attention to Doctor Sun's condition. His complexion looked normal at the time—Doctor Wu Qinghua and Doctor Lin Rui can testify."

Only Lin Rui was in the office; upon hearing this, he immediately agreed with Zhang Yang's account.

"Now, Wang Chuan, speak. Last night you performed excellently—our hospital should write a praise letter to Jiangda Medical College on your behalf."

His tone shifted, his face turning stern: "Your finger replantation surgery—you learned it in less than a day?"

Wang Chuan met his gaze without flinching: "Report, Director—I have an exceptional memory. I memorized all of Teacher Zhang Yang's training textbook. This morning, I already familiarized myself with microscope operation, and during my time at medical school, I trained rigorously in suture technique daily."

"I have confidence in myself—and the outcome proves I was right."

Attending Physician Zhang Yang knew Wang Chuan had a good memory, but had never imagined it was this strong—so strong it had formed muscle memory, enabling actual surgical operation.

After all, he was the mentor teacher: "Report, Director—Wang Chuan's memory is indeed exceptional. This morning, I tested his theoretical knowledge—he answered every question correctly. He also mastered microscope operation quickly."

"I believe Wang Chuan may be exceptionally gifted."

Seeing Director Wei's expression soften considerably, he added further: "Of course, there was also luck involved. Finger injuries fall into categories: incision wound, electric saw wound, crush wound, avulsion wound, etc."

"A clean kitchen knife causes an incision wound—no tissue contusion, optimal finger condition—far simpler than the other types of injury."

Wang Chuan saw Zhang Yang defending him; he himself had trained in virtual space with severed finger surgeries, which were highly similar—so he had been confident then.

If he had encountered other types of injury, he might not have had 100% confidence to complete it.

"Report, Director—just as my mentor teacher said, there was some luck involved. I still need to keep learning."

Director Wei Xing was deeply shaken—this intern was unquestionably a born surgeon.

A good surgeon possesses knowledge in mind, coordinates hand and eye, and executes brain commands decisively.

Among surgeons, some spend their entire lives only able to remove appendices, never mastering more complex procedures.

Even if they learn the theory, their hands and eyes tell them: you haven't learned it.

Vice Dean Yang's words interrupted Director Wei's thoughts.

"Wang Chuan, did you study law in university? Your status permits participation in clinical practice activities only under the guidance of a licensed physician—strictly forbidden to perform independent diagnosis and treatment."

Wang Chuan did not hesitate: "Report, Vice Dean Yang—I studied law in university."

"At that moment, the patient was about to lose his index finger; Attending Physician Sun Ke could not continue, Teacher Zhang Yang was already in surgery, and there were no other options—plus, I had full confidence in my operational ability."

"Most importantly, Attending Physician Sun Ke told me he would supervise from the side—I was not performing independent diagnosis and treatment."

"Nonsense—wasn't Sun Ke dozing on a chair outside the surgery room?" Yang Guohua did not say this aloud; Sun Ke had done his bidding, so he counted as one of his own.

Director Wei Xing's inner thoughts: this kind of talent must be nurtured carefully—future backbone doctors of Mingzhou First Hospital must be protected.

He glanced toward Tao Tao.

Director Tao Tao understood immediately: "Director, when we entered the surgery room, the operation was already complete. Doctor Sun Ke had only left to rest after finishing the relatively simple wound suturing."

"In short, this replantation of amputated finger surgery fully complies with legal regulations."

"What do you say, Vice Dean Yang?"

After hearing this, Yang Guohua thought: Looks like Wei Xing is determined to protect Wang Chuan. Fine—I'll let it slide. Wang Chuan will be interning here for a full year; next time, I'm sure I'll find his mistake.

Director Wei Xing glanced at Yang Guohua and ordered: "Write an investigation report on this surgery. Attending Physician Sun Ke was the chief surgeon; assistants were Lin Rui and Wang Chuan. Conclusion: legal and compliant. Myself and Vice Dean Yang will sign it."

"All of you are witness testimonies. Combine them with the medical records—attach them all as evidence to the investigation report."

"Damn it, Lao Wei, you've got guts."

Yang Guohua cursed inwardly—dragging him into signing meant that any future attack on Wei Xing over this would be an attack on himself.

"Lin Rui, go invite the Section Chief of Medical Affairs and several department directors in," Director Wei instructed.

Seeing the Emergency Department office now packed, Director Wei cleared his throat: "Today's replantation of amputated finger surgery—Chief Surgeon Sun Ke, assistants Lin Rui and Wang Chuan—performed excellently."

"Especially this intern—Wang Chuan, you're amazing!"
