Chapter 8: You Are Not My Treasure; It's None of Your Damn Business

~8 min read 1,587 words

Wang Chuan, Li Wei, and Xiao Yuchu sat in order on a long bench, each holding a boxed meal.

Xiao Yuchu even soaked her chopsticks in hot water for at least one minute before she started eating.

Though it tasted a bit bad, the teenagers at nine in the evening couldn't withstand the protest of an empty stomach.

Suddenly, Xiao Yuchu stood up; she wanted to sit beside Wang Chuan.

Wang Chuan and Li Wei were about the same height; Wang Chuan looked clean, with good looks and intelligence on point.

Li Wei was cool when helping classmates with hot-blooded enthusiasm, but he carried a smell of smoke, so he lost points.

People who smoke are "social people," and social people are bad people; that driver Da Shun and the restaurant boss Tie Long both smoked.

When Xiao Yuchu stood up, Wang Chuan took a careful look; Xiao Yuchu was now about 1.58 meters tall; the first time he saw her ten years later in his past life, she was 1.67 meters.

Li Wei felt he was being despised. "Brother Chuan, we helped her, and she still gives us the cold shoulder."

The corners of Wang Chuan's mouth curled up slightly: "She's giving you the cold shoulder, not me. Right? Little sister, I forgot to ask, what's your name?"

"You!" Li Wei pinched Wang Chuan's waist and whispered, "Good brother, you really saved my face."

Xiao Yuchu looked at the clear, handsome face. "Big brother, thank you. My name is Yu Yue; Yu as in 'surplus,' Yue as in 'pleasant.'"

Wang Chuan chuckled inwardly, 'Xiao Yuchu, impulsive just now, now she's being smart again. Meeting a stranger, she knows to make up a name.'

"Wang Chuan, a student at Jiangcheng University School of Medicine. He is my classmate, Li Wei."

"Show me your student ID again," Xiao Yuchu requested, wanting to confirm if it was real.

Li Wei retorted, "Didn't you see Brother Chuan's student ID on the mountain road just now? You don't trust us! Show us your student ID too."

"What! I'm in ninth grade; where would I get a student ID?" Xiao Yuchu furrowed her brows, pouted, and pretended to be aggrieved.

Even if she had one, she couldn't give it; she was now called Yu Yue.

Wang Chuan didn't hesitate; he handed both Li Wei's student ID and his own to Xiao Yuchu.

He knew Xiao Yuchu too well: fastidious, straightforward yet cunning, impulsive and immediately regretful, then becoming very cautious.

"No, Brother Chuan, at least ask which school in Jiangcheng she goes to? Who is her homeroom teacher?"

Li Wei wouldn't let it go; he thought it was very strange for a middle schooler to take an inter-provincial bus late at night.

"With your height, you don't look like a middle schooler; you're almost 1.6 meters."

Xiao Yuchu ignored Li Wei and looked at Wang Chuan.

Wang Chuan said, "Sister, it's good to be cautious; don't mind Li Wei."

After carefully examining the student IDs, Xiao Yuchu suddenly became shy and asked in a low voice, "Is the men's restroom over there clean?"

Li Wei burst out laughing. "Yu Yue, you're fastidious; the women's restroom is too dirty, so you're holding your urine, right?"

Xiao Yuchu's cheeks turned slightly red as she lowered her head.

Wang Chuan sighed. "The men's restroom is that bamboo grove you just passed. I'll go with you; I'll stand at the entrance and wait for you. Let's go."

After returning from the bamboo grove, everyone got back on the bus.

The three of them sat together at the back of the bus. Xiao Yuchu took a brand-new hundred-yuan bill from her backpack, handed it to Wang Chuan, and said slowly, "They gave us the boxed meals for free; we didn't pay. This hundred is for you, as a fee for your help."

Li Wei snatched it and said, "What's the meaning of this? A hundred yuan as a help fee? Who do you think you're looking down on! Who's short of a hundred?"

He pulled out more than ten hundred-yuan bills from his pocket, then thought again, threw the hundred back to Xiao Yuchu, and said, "We don't want the money. Just send a banner to our school; a Praise Letter works too."

Xiao Yuchu's eyes widened. "The money is thanks to Brother Wang Chuan for stepping in and stopping me from being beaten."

She paused, then lowered her head and said, "Brother Wang Chuan treating the black-hearted boss and the driver is aiding the wicked! He doesn't deserve a thank-you letter from me."

"Doesn't deserve it!" Li Wei shot up in anger, but Wang Chuan pressed him back into his seat.

"Ungrateful wolf! I'm so angry, Brother Chuan, ignore this kind of person!"

Wang Chuan reached out and took the hundred-yuan bill very decisively.

For teenagers, hating evil as much as loving good is one of the sources of their bursting vitality.

"Very good, we are even now." Wang Chuan didn't want to explain things like a doctor's benevolence.

He had already memorized the license plate number and the approximate location of the black-market shop; after getting off the bus, he would find time to report them.

These black-market shops will improve once the high-speed rail and highway network become dense in the future, but they won't be eradicated.

"Good."

Xiao Yuchu looked up, not expecting Wang Chuan to be so straightforward; she thought Wang Chuan would scold her like Li Wei did. What a strange big brother.

Suddenly, a thought occurred to Wang Chuan: he had helped once just now; would there be a second time? Fate was always unpredictable.

His act of rebirth had already altered the course of some things.

He asked with a bit of worry, "Xinzhou is my hometown; I know it very well. If you need help, just say so. Sister, is there an adult picking you up at the station?"

In his past life, Xiao Yuchu seemed never to have told him; she had even gone to Xinzhou when she was in ninth grade.

As soon as he finished speaking, Wang Chuan saw a wary look appear in Xiao Yuchu's eyes.

A normal little sister would think, "Oh, this college student brother has such a good heart; he's even worrying about my safety."

What Xiao Yuchu was thinking now was, "There are wolves in sheep's clothing in this world; could this Brother Wang Chuan be one?"

Xiao Yuchu didn't answer verbally; she only nodded, pulled her backpack backward with both hands, and leaned against the window to listen to music.

'Brother Xiao Rongyue; could he also be coerced, calling to demand money?'

'Let me go directly to Xinzhou People's Hospital for the handover.'

Three hours later, the bus arrived at Xinzhou Bus Station.

"Doctor Wang, wait!"

Driver Da Shun called out to Wang Chuan and handed him a mobile phone: "My boss's phone!"

Wang Chuan took it and signaled for Li Wei to follow Xiao Yuchu.

He heard Tie Long's voice coming from the phone: "Doctor Wang, thank you. The hospital examination here preliminarily confirms liver fluke-induced liver damage. The doctor also said the worms can survive in the body for 20 or 30 years."

Ding. Wang Chuan saw a light screen before his eyes: Peak Medical Technique Experience Activation progress: Received patient gratitude, cumulative 3/100.

Driver Da Shun took out five hundred yuan, "The Boss said, this is for your medical fees."

Wang Chuan waved his hand, thinking, Tomorrow I will go report you.

He spoke up: "I cannot take this money; I haven't graduated yet. Accepting money would count as practicing medicine illegally!"

"If you don't accept it, I won't have a good explanation. How about you take back the two hundred and twenty-five yuan in taxi fare for the three of you?"

Da Shun's face showed difficulty.

Wang Chuan had to take back the taxi fare, walked to the main gate of the station, didn't see Xiao Yuchu, "Xiao... where is Sister Yu Yue? Did an adult come to pick her up?"

Li Wei replied: "No, she took a taxi by herself."

"What?" Wang Chuan's heart sank; a minor, late at night, just took a taxi by herself.

"I heard her tell the driver to go to Xinzhou People's Hospital; it was a legitimate taxi. Chuan, wait, you will receive a call..."

Li Wei stammered out.

Suddenly, a mobile phone ringtone sounded; Wang Chuan looked at the name: Goddess Pei.

He pressed the answer button and heard a cold, questioning voice on the other end: "Wang Chuan, how could you sell the Sony Ericsson T618 I gave you!"

It was Pei Nanli.

Wang Chuan looked at Li Wei, understanding that Li Wei had told her.

He coughed, then called out in a very gentle voice: "Baby, Baby Pei."

Pei Nanli over there panicked: "Who is your baby? Wang Chuan, are you sick?"

"Oh, you're not my baby. I bought the mobile phone, I sold it; what business is it of yours!"

Wang Chuan gave Pei Nanli no chance to reply and directly hung up the mobile phone.

Li Wei, standing nearby, gave Wang Chuan a thumbs-up.

The mobile phone ringtone sounded again; Wang Chuan didn't look, answered directly, and said: "Are you never going to stop?"

"Chuan, it's me, Nephew. Grandma is hospitalized; if you have time, come back and take a look. She wouldn't let me tell you... she's staying at Xinzhou People's Hospital."

Wang Chuan's heart gave a thud, and his expression changed abruptly.
