Chapter 7: The Reason for Becoming a Saint
Kong Xuan returned to Jinao Island and immediately walked toward Biyou Palace, preparing to meet his Grandmaster to tell him that he had returned, and intending to speak with his Grandmaster about the Hongmeng Purple Qi to ask about the secret to attaining the Dao.
Suddenly someone shouted, "Fourth Senior Brother, you're back! I haven't seen you for several thousand years; what have you been doing?" At that time, Kong Xuan was the fourth disciple, Zhao Gongming was the fifth, and the three Qiongxiao were ranked by age.
Kong Xuan looked back and saw it was Qiongxiao. He replied, "I have been in seclusion all these years, so I haven't been out. Junior Sister, your cultivation has progressed very quickly over these years." Kong Xuan saw that Qiongxiao had already reached the early stage of Great Luo Golden Immortal, hence his remark.
"But I still can't see through your cultivation, Senior Brother. You must be very powerful after being in seclusion for several thousand years," Qiongxiao said playfully.
"It's nothing. I am also at the early stage of Great Luo Golden Immortal now, but since I am a body cultivator, you can't tell if you don't look closely. If you don't believe me, look again." Kong Xuan hid his strength at the early stage of Great Luo Golden Immortal; he had a purpose for doing this—the lower the strength, the less attention one attracts, and it would be very satisfying to play the pig to eat the tiger later.
"Oh, so you're at the same level as me, Senior Brother. But you practice the Mysterious Technique, so you must be much stronger than me." Seeing that he was indeed at the early stage of Great Luo Golden Immortal, Qiongxiao feared Kong Xuan might feel depressed, as he had previously been a level higher than her, so she spoke to comfort him.
"Alright, let's not talk about that. What has happened in these few thousand years? Tell your Senior Brother; I don't know anything," Kong Xuan asked.
"Senior Brother, major events have happened in these few thousand years. It's a pity you were in seclusion," Qiongxiao said with regret.
"Oh, what happened? Tell me quickly," Kong Xuan said, sensing that something major must have occurred.
It turned out that the world had undergone tremendous changes.
First, Nuwa created humans and became a Saint, the first to do so besides the Dao Ancestor. It is said the scene was magnificent; merit descended from heaven, all things bowed in worship, and everything was peaceful.
Then, Houtu, one of the twelve Ancestral Witches, saw that after living beings died, they became wandering ghosts, and if not careful, their bodies and spirits would be destroyed. Filled with compassion, under the operation of the Heavenly Dao, she sacrificed herself to transform into the Six Paths of Reincarnation, allowing the lonely souls of the world to be reincarnated.
After seeing the Human Race, Laojun was lost in thought; he founded the Human Teachings and became a Saint.
Following Laojun, the Primordial established the Chan Sect and became a Saint.
Tongtian established the Jie Sect and became a Saint.
Jieyin and Zhunti also established the Western Teachings, but their merit was insufficient, so they made fifty great vows before becoming Saints.
The Demon Clan and the Witch Clan finally clashed. The cause was that the ten princes of the Celestial Emperor snuck out to play together, scorching the earth and causing misery for all living things. The Great Witch Kuafu of the Witch Clan chased the Golden Crows until he died of exhaustion. His good brother, the Great Witch Houyi, in order to avenge him, used his bow and arrows to shoot down nine Golden Crows, letting the last one escape. It returned to report to Dijun, and Dijun was greatly enraged, so the Witch and Demon clans inevitably fought.
Both clans were the strongest in heaven and earth. In the end, they fought until the heavens crumbled and the earth split. Neither side could do anything to the other; except for a few Demon Great Sages who survived, all other experts of the Demon Clan died in battle. The Witch Clan did not fare well either; except for Chiyou and a few other notable Great Witches who survived, all others died in battle.
From then on, both clans declined and withdrew from the stage of history.
Because the final eleven Ancestral Witches perished together with Dijun and Donghuang Taiyi, the energy was too great, ultimately crashing into and breaking Pangu's spine, Mount Buzhou.
The sky leaked, and finally, six Saints including Nuwa, the Three Pure Ones, Jieyin, and Zhunti joined forces to patch the sky.
Finally, the Dao Ancestor Hongjun appeared, saying this was necessary for the operation of the Heavenly Dao. Now that the Witch and Demon clans had withdrawn, the Heavenly Court could not be without a master, so he appointed his two attendants, Haotian to serve as the Celestial Emperor and Wangmu to serve as the Queen Mother, and from then on, the structure of the world changed.
When Kong Xuan heard these things from Qiongxiao, he was truly shocked. Damn it, why did he choose to cultivate inside a pill furnace? In the novels he read before, the protagonist would always warn Nuwa when she was becoming a Saint, help her, and then gain merit, or help the Demon Clan or Witch Clan fight and end up with many benefits. Why did he miss out? He was so regretful.
Thinking of his Hongmeng Purple Qi, he felt more balanced. What magic treasure or merit could compare to the chance to become a Saint? He should still ask his Grandmaster how to become a Saint.
He entered Biyou Palace and saw the Tongtian Sect Leader.
"Greetings, Grandmaster. Congratulations on becoming a Saint," Kong Xuan said respectfully.
"Your cultivation has progressed very quickly over these years; you have already reached the peak of Great Luo Golden Immortal. I wonder what turn your Mysterious Technique has reached," the Tongtian Sect Leader looked at Kong Xuan and said.
"Reporting to Grandmaster, I have reached the peak of the Fifth Turn. I am only lacking battle; I believe that through battle, I will definitely be able to reach the Sixth Turn. By then, even an ordinary Quasi-Saint will not be my match. Currently, I can barely fight to a draw with a Quasi-Saint of the early stage," Kong Xuan knew his strength could not be hidden from a Saint, and he did not intend to hide it, so he reported his strength truthfully.
"En, not bad. I believe that among the disciples of the Three Pure Ones, only the disciple of the Eldest Senior Brother, Xuandu, can fight you; other disciples have some gaps compared to you," Tongtian said happily, seeing his disciple was so promising.
"Grandmaster, I want to ask about the issue of attaining the Dao; please enlighten me," Kong Xuan asked.
"Oh, you are thinking of becoming a Saint before even reaching the Quasi-Saint stage? You are worthy of being my, Tongtian's, disciple. You have ambition. Your teacher will explain it to you," Tongtian said happily.
"Grandmaster, wait a moment. Look at what this is." Saying this, Kong Xuan took out the Hongmeng Purple Qi and handed it to Tongtian.
"En? Hongmeng Purple Qi? How could it be with you? Isn't it with Hongyun?" Tongtian said in surprise.
Kong Xuan then told Tongtian the process of obtaining the Hongmeng Purple Qi.
"You are indeed a person of great fortune. This thing has actually fallen into your hands; it seems your predestined opportunity is very deep," Tongtian said with pleasant surprise.
"Grandmaster, what exactly is the relationship between this Hongmeng Purple Qi and attaining the Dao?" Kong Xuan asked in confusion.
"Let your teacher first tell you what attaining the Dao is all about. There are seven basic laws in the world: Wind Law, Water, Fire, Earth, Thunder Law, Light Law, and Darkness Law, as well as three special laws: time, space, and speed. When you reach the late stage of Quasi-Saint, you will comprehend one of these laws. The difficulty of comprehending various laws is very high. Of course, the comprehension of laws is basically divided into: initial comprehension, basic comprehension, medium comprehension, high comprehension, and ultimate comprehension. Then, by comprehending further, you can entrust your true spirit into the comprehended law to become a Saint," Tongtian explained in detail.
"Then what does the Hongmeng Purple Qi have to do with this?" Kong Xuan asked even more confusedly.
"The Hongmeng Purple Qi contains a law. I don't know exactly which law it is, but one thing is certain: with the Hongmeng Purple Qi, the difficulty of you becoming a Saint will at the very least be much, much simpler," Tongtian continued.
