Chapter 30: Normal people can't share the same view as lunatics

~7 min read 1,339 words

In the field of artillery, Bu'er Boshi is absolutely a genius, but in other aspects he is very childish.

This may be related to his childhood; his family had ten brothers, he was the ninth, and at age three his mother died, his father was a lawyer, supposedly wealthy, but his father ran away! Thus Bu'er Boshi could only be raised by his uncle and aunt.

From childhood on, he had a solitary personality and was easily angered, but his mind was sharp; at just 22 he became the youngest PhD at the University of Toronto, then became a professor at McGill University in Montreal, and by 1964, at age 36, he was the director of that university's Institute of Universe Research.

The following year, a German woman quietly found him and brought a Paris Cannon; from then on Bu'er Boshi became obsessed with this kind of cannon, his dream being to use cannons to realize his space dream!

At that time, the militaries of the United States and Canada were very interested in his project and even funded his experiments on Barbados Island in the Caribbean Sea.

Unfortunately, when his project made good progress and even gained the ability to launch small satellites into space, the project was terminated! Some say it was because rocket technology advanced rapidly and eliminated the super cannon, but actually the key was that this guy was antisocial and cursed out his clients.

After being abandoned, Bu'er Boshi decided to go it alone; at this point the lack of money became an issue, so he started working on 155mm howitzers, this project purely for profit—anyone would sell as long as they were paid, for example, South Africa, which was sanctioned due to apartheid.

Later, this old guy went on to design cannons for Sha Damu, but ended up being killed by the Squid Special Agents.

Looking at his life, one can only say, personality determines fate!

Such a person is hard to get along with, not to mention that if I proposed the 52-caliber being most suitable and went there, wouldn't we end up arguing? This guy is extremely stubborn, basically never listening to others' opinions.

Better not stir up trouble for myself!

"Why? This is a rare opportunity for exchange!" Zhu Lao didn't quite understand; he had contacted the bigwigs of the domestic arms industry in advance, which would also be a great help for Qin Miao's future development.

"I can't get out! Not only do I have to go to school, I'm also taking five computer science courses, with classes from Monday to Friday."

Taking on courses?

Zhu Lao and the others were stunned: "You're teaching college students?"

"Mm-hmm."

"Ah, this is really a hassle... how about we hold the meeting on Saturday and Sunday?"

For my own sake, would you rather change the meeting time?

Qin Miao kept shaking his head: "No, that won't work either—I still have to make up missed coursework on weekends, plus a few other research projects... Zhu Lao, I really can't get away, and besides, that comment just now was just my personal opinion; there's no need to say it to Bu'er Boshi's face."

That guy is single‑minded; if he heard I'd badmouthed the 45‑caliber and showed up at my door, what would I do? Know that internationally there's talk of a 45‑caliber revolution in artillery history! We're normal people—no need to argue with a lunatic…

Just then, the machine tool stopped.

"All right! The shell has finally been machined!" Professor Yuan said: "Old Zhu, you can take this warhead away; study it well, and maybe you can improve it further."

"Hmm, we'll take it away to study; as for improvements, that's hard to say." Zhu Lao said.

It just… left?

Watching the other party carry away that warhead, Qin Miao inexplicably felt uneasy.

Forget it!

Qin Miao yawned, then climbed onto the bare desk; a few seconds later, his snoring thundered.

Oh oh oh… the sound of a rooster crowing woke Qin Miao; he curiously looked out the window—hey, there's actually a rooster, and an old one at that!

Several minutes later.

A ball of fire burned at the doorway of the experimental workshop, with a large mud ball burning on it; soon the mud ball was baked dry.

Before I wasn't acquainted with this big rooster at all, but now I finally am!

Qin Miao brought the mud ball back to the experimental workshop, then picked up a hammer—clang, clang, clang!

The mud clump split open, and a fragrant aroma wafted out.

The simplest cooking methods often yield the tastiest food—well, the chicken of this era is still the most delicious!

The exterior is fragrant and charred, the meat tender and juicy—just looking at it makes you drool! First, tear off a drumstick to eat!

Qin Miao gave a strong tug, and the drumstick came off—then…

Wait, is someone at the doorway?

Seeing that familiar figure, Qin Miao felt somewhat helpless: "How old are you? Never mind, whoever sees gets a share—come in and eat together."

"I… I… I just brought you some porridge from the cafeteria and a meat bun…" Chu Miaomiao put down her lunchbox, about to leave, but then the drumstick was held up to her mouth.

"No, you have to eat; once you do, we're accomplices—otherwise you might report us, and then Lin Chong mounting Mount Liang would also have to submit a token of allegiance."

The aroma was overwhelming—Chu Miaomiao really couldn't resist.

"Okay." She carefully took it with both hands, gently placed it in her mouth, then took a bite—crisp, fragrant, delicious!

"Come, here's another chicken wing for you—by the way, thanks to you coming, otherwise I really couldn't finish this whole beggar's chicken."

"Qin Miao, aren't you going to class today?"

"Ah, what can I do? I'm busy all day with endless things."

Qin Miao looked out the window with a blank expression, and then… he saw a head: "Zhao Wanli? Why do you like eavesdropping? Come on in! Good luck, let's eat chicken together!"

Chu Miaomiao's expression instantly turned unnatural.

"It's nothing, I just… went to the classroom this morning for morning reading, heard Wang Fang say that Chu Miaomiao hadn't returned to the dorm last night, so I went around looking."

"You seem quite concerned about Chu Miaomiao." Qin Miao said: "But… do you know what to say when you go back?"

Zhao Wanli's mind was in a turmoil—what do you mean by that?

"Chu Miaomiao, you were doing R&D together here last night, right?"

"Exactly." Chu Miaomiao said firmly: "This is a state‑key secret project; you'd better not talk nonsense, or you'll end up arrested like that little thug who occupied the school building."

Zhao Wanli's face looked even worse.

Qin Miao… was speechless. Well, saying Chu Miaomiao slept at his place wouldn't be appropriate; better to say she helped out in the experimental workshop. As for why it was her? Classified!

"Come, eat chicken!" Qin Miao tore off a piece of chicken head and neck: "See if it's familiar? This is what pecked you…"

"I… I'm full."

Zhao Wanli didn't dare accept, turned and left.

"Qin Miao, I'm leaving too." Chu Miaomiao stood up, took a deep breath, and then revealed a bright smile again.

Hey, wait—there's so much left, if I eat it all by myself I'll burst!

Qin Miao rushed to the doorway, then saw Professor Yuan standing there, his gaze full of meaning.

Professor Yuan, great luck and great profit, let's eat chicken together?

I made you your favorite staff canteen breakfast, but looking at this, you don't need this old man to worry about you anymore!

Professor Yuan, don't make wild guesses, there's nothing between me and Chu Miaomiao; it's purely a normal classmate relationship.

Wait, is this the kind of thing that gets darker the more you describe it?

Professor Yuan, you came over this early morning, is there something?

Hmm, if I go apply for Cannon Steel, can you make a 155mm howitzer? The 52-caliber kind.
