Chapter 404: Emotion Is the Greatest Weakness

~8 min read 1,445 words

*Crack. *

The bullet struck the man beneath his ribs.

He let out a muffled grunt but didn't fall, still pressing his body down on Ye Lin.

Just as Yu Dazhang was about to fire a second shot, Ye Lin broke free from the man's hands and drove an elbow squarely into his neck.

Afraid of hitting Ye Lin, he had no choice but to stop firing, while watching the reactions of the others in the room.

"Everyone hands up!"

Yu Dazhang shouted.

Four men quickly raised their hands high, while one man raised his noticeably slower than the rest.

The man leaning against the far right simply didn't move at all.

"Yes, you—hands up!"

Yu Dazhang immediately swung the muzzle toward the man who hadn't moved.

But the instant his words fell, the man who'd only half-raised his hands suddenly bent forward and charged at him.

Is this guy insane? Way too brave… Yu Dazhang stepped back, but kept the muzzle trained on the man on the far right.

Sure enough, that man seized the opening and pulled a handgun from his pocket.

*Bang. *

Before he could even raise the muzzle, Yu Dazhang put a bullet into his chest.

Seeing he still clung to the gun and refused to let go, Yu Dazhang didn't hesitate for a second—he squeezed the trigger again and again.

*Bang bang*—one to the chest, one to the head.

The gun finally slipped from the man's hand and clattered to the floor.

And the one who'd charged in had just reached Yu Dazhang at close range.

His footsteps slowed; looking at the fat man before him, he froze for a moment.

Yu Dazhang didn't dare take him lightly and swung the muzzle around…

*Crack*—a shot square in the chest.

That bullet pinned the man in place; he didn't take another half-step forward.

Sorry, you're just too close to me… Yu Dazhang showed no mercy at all and fired one more shot into him.

*Bang*—still the chest.

The man finally dropped.

It wasn't that Yu Dazhang was cruel—it was that their teamwork was just too seamless.

One man charges in to draw attention, the other waits for the chance to draw and ambush.

Swap in someone without real combat experience and they'd fall for it in a heartbeat.

Yu Dazhang knew all too well that in a life-or-death moment like this, the slightest hesitation would put him on the back foot.

So he didn't dare hesitate for even an instant—he had to strike decisively, without the slightest mercy.

If he couldn't be resolute when things happened, he wouldn't have lived to see today.

"Ahh!!"

A scream rang out, and immediately the hostesses in the room burst into shrieks.

"Shut up!"

Yu Dazhang, driven to distraction by the noise, barked an angry rebuke.

The bullets didn't hit you—what the hell are you screaming for.

He then let his gaze fall on the man who'd been pinning Ye Lin at the start.

Look at this guy—not even a grunt after all that, he's a tough one… Yu Dazhang sized him up inwardly.

By then the burly man was also staring at him.

The man's eyes were complex, as if to say: Do I even know you? You walk in and the first thing you do is put a bullet in me.

Even cops don't handle things like this.

Everyone else gets told to put their hands up—me, you can't even be bothered to speak, just go straight for the ribs.

What did I do to make you this worked up?

Yu Dazhang read the accusation and grievance in those resentful eyes, but didn't pay it much mind.

He went over to the man on the right and first reached out to feel the carotid artery.

Dead.

Then he picked up the gun from the floor, tucked it into his waist, and ordered the people in the room:

"Everyone up, hands on your heads, squat against the wall—men on one side, women on the other."

By then Ye Lin had also drawn a handgun from her thigh and come to Yu Dazhang's side, watching the men in the room warily.

Hiding a gun there—doesn't it chafe? … Yu Dazhang watched her pull the gun from the inside of her thigh and couldn't help swallowing.

"Where are your people?"

As he asked, his eyes stayed fixed on the people squatting in the corner.

"Should be here soon." After Ye Lin answered, she asked curiously:

"Why are you here? Didn't I tell you to leave?"

Hearing that, Yu Dazhang immediately objected and reminded her:

"Forgot already? You gave me a hand signal at the time, asking me to help you."

Ye Lin thought for a moment and immediately saw where the problem lay.

She said, her face stern:

"That gesture of mine meant for you to ignore me and leave this place as quickly as possible."

After saying that, she smiled again:

"It's also thanks to you misunderstanding my meaning—otherwise my situation right now would definitely be terrible."

While the two were talking, the door to the private room was pushed open, and two men in black suits walked in.

Yu Dazhang immediately pointed his gun at them.

"Friendly."

Ye Lin raised her hand and gave his wrist two light pats.

The two men who entered didn't mind, and went separately to check on the wounded.

Before long, three more men in suits came in, and accompanying them were medical personnel.

By this point Yu Dazhang and Ye Lin had already stepped out of the private room, leaving the space to them.

"Thanks for your help this time." Ye Lin said gratefully.

Yu Dazhang smiled:

"It's only right."

Working with the National Security Bureau meant he didn't have to worry about anyone coming after him later, and he didn't even have to write a report—Ye Lin and her people would naturally cover for him.

"The man who was riding you—that was the target, right?"

Given Ye Lin's skills, an ordinary person couldn't have restrained her.

He had noticed earlier that the other people in the room weren't the trained sort.

Even the two who tried to attack him performed very amateurishly.

So he concluded that only that man in the room was the National Security target; the others were probably his friends or underlings or the like.

"What do you mean 'riding you'—watch your wording." Ye Lin shot him a glare:

"That's him. I just checked his wounds, they're not fatal, which is why I said you did a big favor. If he'd died, this whole operation would've been for nothing."

After saying that, she took out her phone and dialed.

Once the call connected, she didn't bother to hide it from Yu Dazhang standing beside her, and said directly:

"Target's in custody. Your side, stand down."

After hanging up, seeing Yu Dazhang's curious expression, she gave a slight smile and explained casually:

"According to intelligence, this man is a famously devoted son, so we also planted watchers at his parents' home."

She paused briefly, then continued:

"You're an expert at cracking cases, so you should know very well that for criminals, emotions often become the weakness and flaw they're most easily broken through."

Anyone who'd studied criminal investigation would know… in Yu Dazhang's view, this was the most basic of basics.

Her intelligence is pretty impressive—not only did they know the suspect was lecherous, they also knew he was a devoted son.

That informant couldn't possibly be the suspect's wife, could he.

Soon the wounded were carried out by the medical personnel, among them that solidly-built man.

It had to be said, his physique was really something—taking a bullet under the ribs, he was still conscious and clear-headed.

If it had been an ordinary person, even if they didn't pass out, they'd be dazed.

As the stretcher passed Yu Dazhang, the man glared at him fiercely, as if to say: just you wait.

It was that very look that made Yu Dazhang freeze.

Looking at the man before him, the words Ye Lin had just spoken surfaced again in his mind…

Emotions are the weakness and flaw criminals are most easily broken through.

Right—emotions!

Yang Jieru and the others have that same weakness.

It's just that they hid that weakness deeper, which is why no one noticed it.

Sins deep as mountains, locked behind bars, it seemed their lives held no hope.

But if you factor in emotion, they still have something they're tied to.

The continuation of emotion…

Children!

I know what they're planning now… at this moment, Yu Dazhang suddenly saw it clearly.

They want to give their children a beautiful future.
