Chapter 466
Twenty minutes later.
Yu Dazhang entered a room without windows.
As soon as he stepped in, a stifling air rushed at him, making it hard to breathe.
Wang Ze sat on a worn-out chair in the center of the room, his hands cuffed to the armrests, looking utterly drained.
It seemed all interrogation rooms shared one common trait: no sunlight.
This temporary interrogation site had achieved that too.
The windows in this room had clearly been bricked up later; the thick walls blocked all external light.
As a result, the entire room became a sealed cage, inducing oppression and despair.
As a police detective, Yu Dazhang naturally understood the logic behind it.
Sunlight gives psychological comfort, helps people stay alert and rational, and thus hinders interrogation.
"Name?"
Yu Dazhang habitually started with basic information.
"Just ask directly," Wang Ze replied weakly.
What had the State Security done to him? Yu Dazhang found no obvious external injuries on him.
From Wang Ze's expression, he didn't look ill either.
Yet he was inexplicably weak, and appeared utterly hopeless.
After staring at him for a moment, Yu Dazhang asked his first question:
"Why did you choose that location as your observation point?"
He asked this to test whether Wang Ze would try to deceive him.
If the man told the truth, he would explain why he included the small forest below in his observation.
Otherwise, he was deliberately avoiding the issue.
"I picked the observation point at random."
Wang Ze answered quickly, as if he hadn't thought at all:
"During the three days of surveillance, I changed three locations—all chosen randomly."
Still not truthful… Yu Dazhang looked at Wang Ze across from him and shook his head helplessly.
The shorter the gap between question and answer, the more likely the answer is a premeditated lie.
Just now, Wang Ze not only answered quickly but showed no facial change—he'd clearly prepared his response in advance.
Talking to someone trained is troublesome.
Yu Dazhang grew tired of wasting time; he stood up and told Li Mingzhao beside him:
"He's still resisting. Give him the treatment."
He didn't spell it out, but both men in the room understood.
Just as he reached the door and pulled it open, Wang Ze suddenly shouted:
"I'll talk, I'll talk—don't leave!"
Why didn't you do this sooner… Yu Dazhang walked back in.
After sitting down again, he said coldly:
"This is your last chance. If you try anything else, you'll bear the consequences yourself."
He didn't know what State Security had used, but he knew how to bluff.
And he was surprised to find that merely this slight threat made Wang Ze turn pale, sweat pouring down, and appear far more alert than before.
"I understand, thank you, really thank you."
Wang Ze nodded and bowed repeatedly, looking as meek as possible:
"Rest assured—I swear I'll tell the truth."
Seeing this, Yu Dazhang regretted not observing yesterday's interrogation.
He simply couldn't imagine how State Security had made the man submit without inflicting physical harm.
Clearly, they'd left deep psychological scars on Wang Ze.
"Same question again."
Yu Dazhang repeated the earlier question:
"Why did you choose that location as your observation point?"
This time, Wang Ze didn't answer immediately; he thought carefully before replying:
"Because that spot allowed me to include the forest below in my observation range."
He guessed right!
The forest definitely had something suspicious!
Suppressing his inner excitement, Yu Dazhang asked again:
"Why observe that forest?"
Wang Ze didn't hesitate—he answered directly:
"I don't know."
Seeing Yu Dazhang glare, he quickly added:
"I'm not lying—I really don't know."
"I was ordered: if there's any unusual activity in either the testing zone or that forest, I must evacuate immediately and report upward at the fastest speed."
That order was strange… Yu Dazhang glanced at Li Mingzhao and saw him staring back with the same puzzled expression—they'd reached the same conclusion.
What kind of unusual activity could that forest possibly have?
Since no one lived there and no one ever went there in normal times, it was just a bare forest; could wild beasts possibly appear there?
Yu Dazhang thought for a moment and asked:
"Did the order specify exactly what kind of abnormal activity to look for?"
"It did." Wang Ze nodded and replied:
"The main focus is observing whether the researchers in the test zone show signs of transferring; the forest area was not detailed."
That's the same as saying nothing at all... Yu Dazhang suspected he was still being slippery.
"Still not being honest, are you?"
He suddenly stood up:
"You have no chance now."
Saying this, he turned and walked out.
Reaching the doorway, he suddenly heard Wang Ze shout:
"Everything I said is the truth! The order was exactly like that; I did not lie, nor did I conceal anything!"
Yu Dazhang stopped his steps and slowly turned his head back.
He saw Wang Ze's eyes wide open, staring at him in terror, his lips trembling.
Not a lie.
Judging from the expression on Wang Ze's face, Yu Dazhang could confirm he was not lying.
It was just...
He had nothing else he wanted to ask.
When he turned to leave again, Wang Ze behind him, terrified, cried out for mercy:
"Don't go! Please, don't go! Keep asking; as long as I know it, I'll tell everything!"
Stepping outside, Yu Dazhang suddenly felt a chill.
A person with actual combat experience should definitely be considered a tough guy, yet now he had become timider than a rabbit.
Wang Ze must have already been scared into wetting himself inside.
Soon, Li Mingzhao also walked out of the room.
"What do you think?"
When Li Mingzhao asked this, he pointed at the room behind him.
The meaning was clear: should they give the person in the room a "job"?
"He didn't lie."
Yu Dazhang waved his hand:
"In the other party's eyes, he is merely a pawn that can be discarded at any time; therefore, they naturally would not reveal their true intentions to him."
He had never intended to extract the truth from Wang Ze when he came here to find him.
Being able to confirm that the forest area had problems meant he had already achieved his goal.
Standing outside for a while, various possibilities flashed through Yu Dazhang's mind, but he still could not figure out why the other party was fixated on that forest.
What exactly was there?
The information possessed was still too little... Yu Dazhang gathered his thoughts and looked at Li Mingzhao:
"Are there dedicated cameras in the test zone facing that forest?"
"No." Li Mingzhao shook his head:
"That forest is too far from the test zone, and there is no need for surveillance there."
"After our previous firefight with the other party, I checked; the perimeter surveillance cannot reach that area at all."
A surveillance blind spot!
Yu Dazhang estimated this was one of the reasons the other party chose that forest.
"What about the team members?" he suddenly asked.
Only then did he realize that Li Mingzhao had become a lone commander today.
"Last night, the armed police had already set up the new checkpoints, and all team members had entered the mountains to set up an ambush."
After Li Mingzhao answered, he glared at him:
"These were all your ideas; how could you forget them so quickly?"
In other words, everyone had already taken action... Yu Dazhang thought for a moment and made a request to Li Mingzhao:
"Arrange for me to join the research team, just like that female researcher before; I will take her place and protect those scientists up close."
He had already decided: since the special action team members were dealing with those agents outside the mountains, he would enter the research team and try to uncover the mole.
Attacking on two fronts, he would root out this entire group.
Li Mingzhao did not agree immediately; instead, he looked at him and smiled:
"Before making this request, please go look in a mirror first; have you ever seen a scientist as fat as you?"
