Chapter 488: Each to Their Own Trade
The State Security's tracking device must be top-grade... Yu Dazhang was quite reassured about this.
Since Li Mingzhao and the others dared to use it, they must be confident it wouldn't be detected.
The only thing he was curious about was whether that tracking device was external or implanted.
Twenty minutes later.
Yu Dazhang suddenly spoke up:
"The car is coming."
The other three in the car immediately looked toward the direction of Unit 53, but saw nothing at all.
"Where?" the three asked in unison.
"It'll appear soon."
Yu Dazhang explained:
"Just now a faint light flashed over there — it was probably the headlights refracting here when the vehicle turned."
A faint light? This was the first time the three had heard such an explanation.
Besides, is that kind of faint light something a human can even detect?
Why does it feel like the three of us have gone blind?
Just as they were puzzling, a bright light flashed past, followed by the sound of a vehicle moving.
It really was coming.
The three were no longer surprised, because by now they had complete faith in Yu Dazhang's words.
Unscientific, but extremely accurate.
Leaving no room for any thought of rebuttal.
Soon, that black SUV sped past them — much faster than when it had come, as if something were chasing it from behind.
Two seconds later.
"Pursue?"
The one asking was Xiao Yi, and he directed the question at Yu Dazhang.
Originally the team had tacitly accepted him as the leader, but for some reason, at this moment he just wanted to ask Yu Dazhang's opinion.
"Wait a bit longer."
Yu Dazhang, however, appeared very calm:
"We need at least a hundred-meter gap, unless we drive without headlights."
He wasn't worried at all about losing them.
With the tracking device, even without them following, the target's location could still be locked.
Having them tail along was simply to guard against any unexpected situations.
For instance, signal loss.
If that happened, it would mean Ying Xuelian had been exposed, and they would have to rush over immediately to snatch her back.
Another three seconds passed.
"About right — go ahead and follow."
As Yu Dazhang's words landed, Xiao Yi immediately started the vehicle and gave chase.
After driving for a stretch, a three-way intersection appeared ahead.
Before Xiao Yi could even open his mouth to ask, Yu Dazhang spoke first:
"Turn left."
Ten minutes later.
"Still turn left."
Another five minutes passed.
"Turn right, pick up speed — we've fallen a bit too far behind."
The three in the car were already numb to it.
From the moment the vehicle started, they had never once seen that black SUV ahead.
They only occasionally caught a small red dot swaying in the distance, but it was far too far away — they could only vaguely make out the other car's tail lights.
Another half hour passed.
They received a reminder from Li Mingzhao:
"The target has stopped. Stay hidden, don't close in."
After the call ended, Xiao Yi asked:
"What do we do? Should we stop first?"
Everyone in the car knew he was asking Yu Dazhang.
"Don't stop."
Yu Dazhang said quickly:
"Don't slow down, just keep driving normally. Even if we do stop, we have to confirm their location first."
As the team's eyes, his words now carried the weight of orders.
The vehicle kept moving, and soon they spotted that black SUV on the roadside. "Whatever you do, don't slow down — drive past," Yu Dazhang reminded them.
Xiao Yi nodded, maintaining the same speed.
As they passed that SUV, everyone except Xiao Yi — who was driving — saw Ying Xuelian step out of the vehicle.
After driving some distance, Yu Dazhang spoke again:
"Turn right up ahead, find a place to park."
Xiao Yi obediently followed instructions, turned the corner, and parked the car in front of a restaurant.
"Report the situation."
Yu Dazhang thought for a moment and said:
"The target vehicle is parked at the back door of a bar; that bar must be their destination."
Xiao Yi took out his phone, but before dialing, he couldn't help asking:
"How do you know it's a bar?"
Just now, when passing the off-road vehicle, he had glanced over as well, yet he saw nothing particularly special about the place.
He had seen no sign resembling a lighted display, nor any signboard or shop name.
The other two in the car also cast questioning glances at Yu Dazhang; clearly, they hadn't spotted anything either.
"I heard the music coming from inside."
Yu Dazhang explained in a low voice:
"The sound wasn't loud, but it was very clear."
That's nonsense... the thought flashed through all three minds almost simultaneously.
They looked at one another, disbelief etched on their faces.
We aren't deaf; why didn't we hear a single note of music?
Besides, while driving, there's already noise inside the car; how could one possibly hear sounds from inside a building from so far away?
We admit your eyesight is good, but your hearing can't possibly be better than ours too.
"Even if you did hear music, how can you be sure it's a bar?"
Xiao Yi's question made sense.
There are many commercial venues that play music, such as KTVs, billiard halls, coffee shops, and so on; all these places play songs.
"They were playing 'Casablanca' inside."
Yu Dazhang explained helplessly:
"At this time of day, only a bar would play that kind of song."
The three of them were stunned again.
It truly touched upon their blind spots in knowledge.
Do bars have specific songs?
This fat guy knows his stuff; looks like he's been to places like this quite a few times.
Not daring to delay, after asking a couple of questions, Xiao Yi immediately contacted Li Mingzhao and reported the situation there.
"You can move closer, but do not act rashly; I haven't received Ying Xuelian's signal yet."
This was part of the plan.
Upon seeing the two enemy agents, Ying Xuelian would send a signal to the National Security Bureau; only then would the operation truly begin.
After ending the call, Xiao Yi turned the car around and drove toward where the black off-road vehicle was parked.
Upon arriving, he didn't drive past; instead, he parked the car on the other side of the road.
"The back door has surveillance cameras installed too," Xiao Yi said, looking across the street, his brow slightly furrowed.
Now they could confirm that the place across the street was indeed problematic.
Ordinary commercial venues don't install surveillance cameras at their back doors because it's unnecessary, unless they fear someone might sneak in through the back.
Put simply, that surveillance camera is meant to deter the police.
The four waited in the car for a while, discovering that no one was entering or exiting the back door, and Li Mingzhao had sent no news either.
Something's off... Yu Dazhang couldn't help asking:
"Why not call for backup?"
The backup he referred to was the SWAT team and the armed police.
Earlier, he had already felt the National Security Bureau's operation was somewhat rash; they had clashed with the enemy several times, yet they hadn't called for backup even once.
Against such armed militants, the SWAT team and armed police are also highly professional; why not use available resources?
"When you criminal police handle cases and make arrests, do you always call the SWAT team and others to do the actual takedowns?" Xiao Yi asked.
This question left Yu Dazhang momentarily stunned.
He instinctively felt this wasn't a compliment, yet he couldn't very well refute it, so in the end, he could only speak the truth:
"That's not the case; in most situations, we can handle it ourselves."
"Then there you have it," Xiao Yi replied, somewhat irritably:
"The guns in our hands aren't just firewood sticks; besides, every trade has its specialists; we are more professional at dealing with agents."
Yu Dazhang could tell that the phrase "every trade has its specialists" in Xiao Yi's mouth carried a specific meaning.
In other words: if the armed police arrived, they'd be useless; they couldn't hold onto those agents.
