Chapter 509: This Time, I'll See It Through to the End With You

~5 min read 806 words

Coming closer, he first greeted his master, then asked:

"There's a suspicion of homicide?"

When he had just walked over, he had deliberately glanced at the corpse on the ground.

It was a girl, neatly dressed, her hair pulled up high at the back of her head; since her face was turned to the side, her features couldn't be made out clearly.

"Based on what we have so far, it does appear to be suicide."

Lu Zhongxin's expression was very grim, and his voice was heavy as he spoke:

"Judging from the scene, she had carefully dressed herself up before jumping — not only was her clothing neat, she had also put on light makeup."

Then why call me here... Yu Dazhang couldn't quite follow his master's train of thought.

He had assumed his master had spotted some other clue, which was why he'd been summoned over.

After all that fuss, it was still suicide.

"Then why did you call me over?" Yu Dazhang asked, looking at him in confusion.

If there wasn't a reasonable explanation, he would even start to suspect his master was deliberately making things difficult for him.

"No suicide note was found upstairs, and none on the victim either," Lu Zhongxin said with a dark expression:

"She was a sophomore from out of town studying in Songhai — would someone like that kill herself for no reason?"

Yu Dazhang understood what he meant.

Whether it was suicide over love or because of excessive academic pressure, before dying people would generally leave behind something like a suicide note — a way of saying goodbye to family.

"Have the call records been checked?" Yu Dazhang asked.

There were also some victims who, before dying, would say goodbye to family through a phone call.

In his view, this girl was studying away from home, and it was quite possible she had used this method.

"Her phone was smashed in the fall; the technical team is currently trying to recover it."

Lu Zhongxin answered quickly:

"The SIM card data has already been successfully read; the call records should be available very soon."

While they were talking, Qian Cheng, who had been examining the scene, walked over toward them.

Coming closer, he first gave Yu Dazhang a nod as a greeting, then said to Lu Zhongxin:

"The time of death matches the time the call was made to police; we can confirm this is the primary scene."

After a brief pause, he raised his head to glance upstairs, then continued:

"No fingerprints or footprints of anyone else were found in the room upstairs, nor any signs of a struggle; additionally, there are no signs of human-inflicted injuries on the victim."

Qian Cheng finished in a tone of reminder:

"The investigation report will be out first thing tomorrow morning, and it won't differ much from what I just said."

As an investigator, he would only state the findings and established facts, and would not insert his own speculation.

But from his words, both master and disciple could tell he was subtly implying the victim did not die by homicide.

After Qian Cheng left, Yu Dazhang looked at Lu Zhongxin:

"Master, if you have something to say, just say it straight — there's nothing you can't tell me; even if it's wrong, I'll do everything I can to help you make it right."

He had noticed when he first arrived that his master seemed to have other thoughts, but had hesitated to speak.

As though worried his own judgment might be wrong, and thereby implicate his disciple.

Lu Zhongxin glanced at Yu Dazhang, and finally asked it:

"Don't you think this suicide case is very similar to the Ceng Xiaoxiao suicide case?"

Very similar? Yu Dazhang thought back for a moment, then realized there was an information gap between him and his master.

When the Ceng Xiaoxiao suicide case happened, he was still at Unit 53 working with State Security to catch a spy.

The reason he knew about the case was because, when master and disciple were chatting about gossip, Lu Zhongxin had told him about it.

Later, it was through Zeng Guilin that he came to understand further the reason behind Ceng Xiaoxiao's suicide.

In other words, Yu Dazhang had heard about it from others from start to finish.

Now, suddenly being asked to compare the two cases, he simply couldn't make any comparison at all.

"Master, just tell me your inference directly."

Yu Dazhang said, somewhat helplessly:

"I have too little information on Ceng Xiaoxiao's case, so I have no basis to make a judgment."

He realized Lu Zhongxin was trusting him a bit too much.

Asking him to make an inference based on a case he'd only heard about — that was being a bit unfair to him.

"Let me first state the common points."
