Chapter 61: What

~7 min read 1,305 words

This was Yu Dazhang’s second time coming to the Qu household.

The first time, he didn’t even step inside—he kissed Qu Tuotuo outside, then carried off their driver.

This time, even with preparation, he was stunned by the opulent interior.

Yu Dazhang had seen mansions before; on short videos, you could see any kind of mansion.

But being inside one in person felt entirely different.

As he walked deeper inside, he couldn’t help glancing around.

That guy in the black vest must be the butler.

Oh~ he’s even wearing a bowtie.

Are those women maids or servants?

It felt like walking into the lobby of a newly opened KTV.

Yu Dazhang followed Qu Tuotuo to the first-floor dining room, where the table was already piled high with dishes.

This must be the famous caviar… Yu Dazhang glanced at it once, then his gaze was drawn to the array of delicacies on the table.

That’s king crab!

Truffle? Is that really truffle?

What a huge lobster!

His favorite crab—shuttlecock crab—didn’t even make it onto the table.

As Yu Dazhang stood there, mouth agape, Qu Wannian and his wife approached.

Logically, they should’ve arrived at the dining room first.

But they’d just been stunned by their daughter’s first love outside the second-floor window, and their emotions hadn’t settled.

The couple sat frozen for a full minute before recovering.

Yu Dazhang instantly recognized them as Qu Tuotuo’s parents.

He was about to greet them when Qu Wannian turned his body aside and let out a loud “Hmph.”

Yu Dazhang froze.

What the hell are you huffing about? I haven’t eaten anything yet.

Is he trying to compete with me?

I’ll have to keep a close eye on him—he’s a serious rival.

When hungry, the desire for food becomes overwhelming; Yu Dazhang was in that state now.

Combined with his relaxed mindset, he felt zero pressure.

He came here just to help Qu Tuotuo fool her parents, and to sneak in a good meal.

He wasn’t really dating her, so he didn’t care about her parents’ attitudes.

Qu’s wife, however, was unusually warm.

After Qu Tuotuo introduced him, she specifically asked about Yu Dazhang’s family background.

At least on the surface, she treated her daughter’s boyfriend with due respect.

After sitting down, Yu Dazhang lowered his head, staring blankly at the feast.

Qu Wannian and his wife assumed he was nervous from being in their home for the first time.

That was normal—it showed he cared about their daughter; only someone who cared would act this way.

But his build… Seeing Yu Dazhang across from him, Qu Wannian huffed again.

Qu Tuotuo couldn’t take it anymore.

“Dad, you invited him over—does our Qu household treat guests like this?”

Qu Wannian didn’t respond, only glared at his daughter.

Qu Tuotuo met his gaze without flinching; the atmosphere between father and daughter turned tense.

Why won’t they pick up their chopsticks… Yu Dazhang was sweating from hunger.

He was the guest, but there were two elders at the table.

By etiquette, only Qu Wannian, as host, could start eating first—he had to wait, or he’d appear grossly rude.

He didn’t care, but manners were ingrained in him since childhood.

He had to follow them, always, under any circumstance.

“I brought him, and you’ve seen him,” Qu Tuotuo said, staring straight at Qu Wannian.

“If you don’t welcome him, we’re leaving right now.”

No, don’t go—haven’t even eaten a bite! That’d be a waste… Yu Dazhang turned his head, bewildered, staring at Qu Tuotuo.

Are you two doing this on purpose?!

“Hey, how much do you weigh?” Qu Wannian spoke, addressing Yu Dazhang directly, tone hostile.

Can’t we eat while we talk…? Yu Dazhang smiled innocently:

“Just over three hundred, but in a bit, I’ll be under three hundred.”

He hoped this would hint to Qu Wannian to start eating—the food would get cold.

“Why don’t you lose weight?” Qu Wannian clearly wanted to keep dwelling on his weight.

His expression was serious; Yu Dazhang half-feared he’d order the dishes removed if he answered wrong.

“Uncle, I’ve only just started gaining weight—I haven’t reached the dieting stage yet.”

That answer should be fine… Yu Dazhang reassured himself, then stared expectantly at Qu Wannian—specifically, at his hands.

He wasn’t sure which hand Qu Wannian used for chopsticks.

“Dad, you’re being unreasonable,” Qu Tuotuo said, voice annoyed.

“So what if he’s fat? Fat people can lose weight. Even if he stays like this, I still like him.”

At this, Qu Wannian and his wife both frowned.

So their daughter liked fat guys.

No wonder she never dated in school—there weren’t any this fat there.

Is he just a little fat?

His build could fit all three of us inside.

The more Qu Wannian thought about it, the more absurd it seemed. His hand, already reaching for chopsticks, slammed down on the table.

“I disagree!”

Yu Dazhang saw him pick up chopsticks and thought the meal was starting—he was about to move, when Qu Wannian slammed them back down.

Please… collect… 6…9…books…com…!

Do those chopsticks have it out for you?

Stop slapping them—slap me instead.

I can’t take it anymore—my hands are shaking from hunger.

“Dad, I’ll listen to you on everything else—except this,” Qu Tuotuo said, ignoring her father’s darkening face.

“I trust my judgment—I won’t misjudge a person.”

She turned to Yu Dazhang beside her and saw him staring blankly at the table, as if struck by trauma.

Seeing him like this, Qu Tuotuo felt a pang of pity.

I shouldn’t have brought him.

I didn’t expect my father to be this cruel—giving him zero dignity.

He suffered so much for me, yet stayed silent… Qu Tuotuo felt more and more guilty.

“Dazhang, say what you think.”

She looked at the silent man beside her and noticed beads of sweat on his forehead.

“Let’s eat first,” Yu Dazhang said, expression utterly defeated.

Even now, he was still trying to preserve harmony… Qu Wannian couldn’t help but reassess him.

He picked up his chopsticks again.

Forty minutes later.

Qu Wannian and his wife watched their daughter and Yu Dazhang walk out the door.

“At first I thought his eyes were vacant—he was just staring at the food the whole time.”

Qu Wannian had started from nothing, serving in the military and on construction sites; back then, he was famous for eating fast.

Yet today, a younger man had out-eaten him at the table.

He didn’t even seem to move his chopsticks much.

How did the entire table turn into empty plates so quickly?

A master. This man was a master.

“Make me another set, exactly the same,” Qu Wannian ordered the butler.

“Stop being stubborn,” Qu’s wife urged.

“Can you even finish it?”

Qu Wannian’s eyes were resolute, sweat beading on his forehead.

“I think I can. I haven’t been this hungry in years.”

On the way back.

Sitting in the back of Qu’s luxury business sedan, Qu Tuotuo complained:

“Did you come to my house just to do eating broadcasts?”

At the dinner table, even she hadn’t eaten much—this guy’s eating speed was simply incomprehensible to an ordinary person.

Now that he was full and satisfied, Yu Dazhang finally realized it.

So Qu Wannian had been humiliating him all along.

Fuck, eating someone else’s food really does make you silent… Yu Dazhang grew angrier the more he thought about it, and couldn’t help saying:

“How did your mom put up with your dad? With that kind of patience, she could succeed at anything.”

“It’s not as exaggerated as you say,” Qu Tuotuo explained. “My dad just cares too much about me.”

“Your mom is no ordinary person,” Yu Dazhang said, his expression grave.

“Enough.”

“Your mom can handle big things.”

“Stop joking.”

“Did your mom ever quit drugs?”

“Shut up!”
