Chapter 747: Actually, I

~3 min read 587 words

“How do you know?!”

Li Jun suddenly widened his eyes, staring at Zhou Dong in disbelief.

“Because I know him.”

Zhou Dong explained seriously:

“He came to my place before; his fiancée and my daughter are very close friends.”

“So you don’t need to be so hostile toward me—your subordinate you value also came to my home.”

He raised his voice slightly:

“Besides, nowadays it’s a society of personal connections; people might form some link at any moment, and there’s nothing wrong with us becoming friends.”

Li Jun had thought Yu Dazhang had become corrupt, but upon hearing that his fiancée and Zhou Dong’s daughter were friends, he finally relaxed.

Although Li Jun did not agree with Zhou Dong’s words, one fact could not be ignored.

That was the society of personal connections.

Too many public officials had fallen because of those two words: “personal connections.”

These seemingly trivial social interactions were often carefully laid traps.

When the other side truly needed your help, the favors you’d once given became leverage, leaving you trapped between advance and retreat.

Li Jun had seen too many similar cases; he naturally knew how to handle them.

“Forget about becoming friends.”

Li Jun stood up, put the receipt into his bag, then looked at Zhou Dong and said:

“I don’t have many friends, and I don’t want any. Besides, even friendships require principles and boundaries.”

“Clearly you don’t understand this—so I definitely won’t be friends with you.”

As he spoke, he waved his hand:

“Since you haven’t done anything yet, I’ll let it go this time. Remember: I can’t tolerate even a speck of dirt.”

After speaking, Li Jun left the room without looking back.

He didn’t even glance at the twenty thousand yuan in cash again.

Outside the study, the middle-aged man immediately stepped forward. He first glanced at Li Jun’s empty hands, a flicker of surprise in his eyes.

But he quickly regained composure, his face resuming a respectful smile as he whispered:

“Director Li, the Master meant well—why refuse?”

Li Jun didn’t even look at him, walking straight toward the staircase.

Outside, the middle-aged man hurried ahead, reached the car, and opened the door for Li Jun.

Once Li Jun was seated in the driver’s seat, the man handed him an envelope, speaking in a voice only they could hear:

“This is a bank card. You don’t have to use it, but please keep it—it’s a safety net if you ever need money urgently.”

As he spoke, he moved to place the envelope on the car’s center console.

Li Jun raised his hand and said coldly:

“Take it back!”

The coldness of his words made the man instinctively pull his hand back.

He hesitated, glancing at Li Jun, saw his grim expression, and dared not speak further.

After Li Jun closed the car door and drove off, the middle-aged man remained standing where he was, his face shifting between dark and light.

As he drove out of the estate, his anger grew.

“A safety net for me?”

Li Jun muttered to himself as he drove:

“Fuck, what right do you have to say that? You think you’re so important.”

Being tricked out of twenty thousand yuan out of nowhere—anyone would be furious.

Especially that final envelope—it made him sick.

Back at the branch, after parking, he didn’t get out immediately, but called Yu Dazhang.

The ringtone rang for a long time before being answered.

“Who is it?”

Yu Dazhang’s voice was drowsy—he’d clearly been woken by the phone.
