Chapter 33: Good Dogs, Learning to Hunt
After hearing Feng Chengmin’s explanation, Wang An was completely shocked!
This dog had fought with a wolf and actually survived in good shape! How fierce must it be!
Normal dogs cannot beat wolves, except for those few breeds with massive builds.
Like this kind of well-trained hunting dog, two working together to fight a wolf to a draw is already incredibly impressive! Dogs and wolves are simply not on the same level.
It seems that the lady who sold the dogs truly didn’t lie!
Buying these dogs was truly worth it! Very good! Very good! His mood was exceptionally great!
Wang An recounted the process of buying the dogs to his uncle-in-law, Feng Chengmin.
After listening, Feng Chengmin sighed endlessly. They were all mountain-goers; although they were accustomed to life and death, even though he didn’t know the other party, he felt a genuine sadness for them from the bottom of his heart.
After speaking, Wang An led Feng Chengmin to see the five little puppies.
When he saw the little black dog, Feng Chengmin’s eyes lit up first, then he squatted down and, ignoring the puppy’s growls and threats, picked it up!
After checking its mouth, he pried it open to look at the teeth, then used his hands to feel the puppy’s four legs, then checked its back, and finally lifted the dog’s tail to look at its anus!
After checking everything, he let out a deep breath and said, "A good dog! Compared to a wolf cub, it’s not much worse!"
Wang An didn’t understand dogs and was full of confusion, but after hearing Feng Chengmin’s words, the smile at the corner of his mouth couldn’t hide his inner joy. He asked, "Uncle-in-law, what do you mean by that?"
Feng Chengmin rolled his eyes at Wang An and said, "If you want to be happy, just laugh! Don’t hold it in and choke yourself!"
Wang An finally laughed out loud, "Hehehe," laughing non-stop!
Feng Chengmin ignored the foolishly laughing Wang An and continued, "To judge a dog, first look at the mouth. A dog’s mouth should be wide. While those thin-mouthed ones are good hunting dogs, their mouths are thin and long, so their bite strength is poor. They are quite useful for catching hares or pouncing on pheasants! But if they face large beasts, they’re finished, useless!"
After finishing, he looked at Wang An. Seeing Wang An nod, he continued, "Then look at the teeth, look at the fangs. Wolf teeth are sharper than dog teeth, so the sharper the fangs, the fiercer the dog! Then look at the shoulders; only a dog with broad shoulders has strength! If a dog has no strength, it can’t pin down a beast!"
After speaking, he seemed to be waiting for Wang An to understand. Wang An was also pondering these few puppies, poking and looking at them. After a while, Wang An nodded again!
Feng Chengmin continued, "Wolves have copper heads, iron bones, and tofu waists. Dogs are the same. The thicker the waist, the more the dog can endure; usually, it can take a few hits and be fine! Finally, look at the anus; the larger the anus, the bolder the dog! Aside from large claws, no matter what beast it encounters, it dares to go up; it just fights, even if it can’t win, it still fights!"
After thinking for a moment, Feng Chengmin added, "Dog legs look about the same thickness, but the thicker they are, the better they can hold their ground. Their endurance is quite sufficient; when chasing beasts, they just keep running!"
"Listening to you say that, I really bought these dogs quite well!" Wang An said happily.
"Mmhmm, your luck is quite high! It’s just that I can’t tell what their sense of smell is like, but wolf-hybrids usually don’t have bad noses. At the very least, this dog must be a top-tier tracker!"
Wang An couldn’t stop his smile and asked again, "What about these four spotted puppies? Uncle-in-law, help me take a look."
Feng Chengmin scanned the four spotted dogs again and said casually, "These are just four ordinary big, clumsy dogs, like most hunting dogs, nothing outstanding!"
Wang An had always wanted to find an experienced hunter to teach him. With his own amateur skills, hunting relied entirely on "luck," and he really didn’t have much of a future!
After thinking, he said flatteringly to Feng Chengmin, "Uncle-in-law, my technique is really poor, I don’t understand anything. Could you take me under your wing?"
To be honest, no experienced hunter is willing to bring along a newcomer, whether they are a relative or anyone else!
They are useless, cause constant trouble, and if they encounter danger, you have to split your attention to protect them. When you catch prey, you have to share it out. What the hell is the point of that!!
Just like when Wang An brought Li Biao into the mountains; although there are very few people as poor as Li Biao, in the eyes of an experienced hunter, all newcomers have the same "flavor" (style)!
Seeing Feng Chengmin frowning, his face full of reluctance, seemingly thinking about how to properly refuse his nephew!
Wang An hurriedly recounted the prey he had caught in detail, explained how he caught them, and patted his chest, indicating that his marksmanship was genuinely quite impressive!
After listening to Wang An’s babbling, Feng Chengmin looked at his nephew with a face full of suspicion, as if asking, why are you so good at bragging!
Seeing Feng Chengmin still not agreeing, Wang An was truly helpless!
After thinking, he told Feng Chengmin about the leopard and led him to the back room to see the leopard skin and bones!
After seeing these, Feng Chengmin completely believed him!
And he was shocked beyond measure! As an experienced hunter, Feng Chengmin knew too well how hard it was to hunt a leopard!
It could be said that if Feng Chengmin caught a leopard now, he would be a genuine marksman, the kind that is publicly recognized!
Although Wang An used a sneak attack, in hunting, as long as you aren’t stealing someone else’s traps, that counts as hard strength!
All that talk about good luck, high chances, and good fate is all bullshit!
Feng Chengmin was shocked for a long time and said silently and slowly, "Your dad didn’t 'thunder' you?"
In the Northeast, disciplining children is graded: scolding, cursing, hitting, beating, whipping, hammering, and 'thundering,' in increasing order. 'Thundering' is the highest level!
"Huh?" Wang An paused and said.
He was bragging quite happily! Being interrupted halfway, this feeling was really unpleasant!
With this interruption, Wang An had no desire to continue bragging!
He also lost his flattery and asked directly, "Uncle-in-law, is it a yes or no? Give me a straight answer. Why are you being so wishy-washy?"
Feng Chengmin laughed, "You can’t take it anymore, are you going to get sour-faced?"
Seeing Feng Chengmin laugh, Wang An knew he had agreed, and said with a grin:
"Look at that! Your nephew’s skills won’t drag you down! Maybe I can even help you bag a big one!"
"Hahaha, you just keep bragging! Fine, I’ll take you for a while! I’ll teach you everything I can!" Feng Chengmin laughed loudly.
"That’s settled then, Uncle-in-law! I’m going to see my father-in-law tomorrow, and I’ll come to your house to find you early the day after tomorrow!" Wang An said happily.
"Fine! It just so happens that in a few days, a few of us who have good relationships in the village are going to have a large-scale dog hunt, so it’s just right for you to witness it!" Feng Chengmin said.
"Hahaha, then I must witness it!"
A group of men were in the room drinking water and fiddling with tobacco, while a group of women were in the outer room helping to tidy up!
After tidying up, everyone stood up one after another, preparing to go home. Wang Dazhu and Liu Guilan took out the meat that had been frozen since yesterday from the vat.
Fair and square, each family got a large piece of boar meat, a piece of sow meat or yellow-haired boar meat, and a small piece of leopard meat!
Leopard meat is just for tasting; this stuff is fishy, gamey, and a bit sour, so the texture is really not great! But in this era, who would dislike meat!
The families of the eldest and second eldest uncles in the same village also brought leftover food in basins; there were many people, so there wasn’t much left!
It was just a gesture of heart. In this era, leftovers still belonged to the category of good things, unlike later generations, where people dislike them and no one wants them!
Just like when they arrived, everyone went home separately. Wang Dazhu drove the sled to take the eldest aunt’s family, who lived further away, back.
Wang An also had nothing to do, so he drove the sled used for going up the mountain to take his uncle’s family back.
Staying over was impossible; every family couldn’t do without people, and besides, there was no room at Wang An’s house!
When everyone was chatting, a group of relatives was also puzzled by the changes in Wang An’s family in such a short time!
However, they were all dealt with by Wang Dazhu and Liu Guilan, who jointly found excuses.
When asked about the two horses, Wang An’s answer was even simpler: he said that when he was messing around in the county town, he helped a friend, and the friend owed him a favor, so he sold them to him cheaply!
Although the relatives had a bunch of questions, which family doesn’t have some secrets!!
Thank you to all the relatives who gave votes, thank you all!
Please add to your bookshelf, please vote, I’m asking for all kinds of votes!
How about adding it to your bookshelf!!
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
