Chapter 545: The Strange Tail-less Fox

~7 min read 1,297 words

Just as Wang An was laughing heartily, he saw the tail-less fox actually squint its eyes and part its mouth, its entire facial expression becoming remarkably similar to Wang An's own laughing face.

Seeing the change in the fox's expression, Wang An's laughter stopped abruptly. The main thing was, how could this fox pull off a human expression? This discovery left Wang An extremely shocked. After staring blankly with wide eyes at the tail-less fox's expression for a while, Wang An bent down, gripped the tail-less fox under its front armpits with both hands, and hoisted it up.

Wang An looked at the tail-less fox's eyes, full of curiosity, and said, "Holy crap, you actually know how to laugh? Come on, tell me, how did you learn to laugh?"

Seeing this, the tail-less fox let out a cry upon hearing Wang An's words, then flicked its two hind legs as if wanting to get back on the ground.

Wang An ignored the tail-less fox's movements and, acting like a lunatic, asked again, "Come on, laugh for your master again and let me see."

Unfortunately, the tail-less fox's current posture seemed rather uncomfortable; not only did it ignore Wang An's question, but it struggled even more violently.

Seeing this, Wang An set the tail-less fox back on the ground and complained,

"You useless piece of trash, I tell you to laugh and you won't, damn it!"

Ignoring the tail-less fox further, Wang An picked up his iron shovel from the ground and continued dragging it along as he searched ahead.

The tail-less fox did not leave either; instead, it followed by Wang An's side, keeping a close eye on his every move.

Soon, an hour passed, and Wang An had not discovered the existence of a fourth gold nugget.

Another hour passed, and Wang An still had no harvest. Fortunately, this kind of thing was extremely normal; after all, if gold nuggets were easily found, they wouldn't be so valuable.

Just as Wang An was sitting on a rock, lighting a cigarette, he looked at the tail-less fox before him. Suddenly, not knowing which nerve had misfired, he asked the tail-less fox:

"Hey, buddy, as a local fox, do you know where there are any gold nuggets?"

After Wang An finished speaking, he noticed the tail-less fox looking at him with a face full of confusion. Only then did he feel that perhaps this fox couldn't understand human speech, or perhaps it didn't understand what a gold nugget was.

And so, Wang An took out the gold nugget he had found earlier and held it out in his hand to display it before the tail-less fox.

And like a lunatic, he said to the fox:

"Look, buddy, it's this thing. You help me find this thing, and I'll give you meat to eat. How about that?"

As he spoke, Wang An even placed the gold nugget near the tail-less fox's nose, letting it sniff it.

To tell the truth, a gold nugget doesn't really have any smell. Of course, the first gold nugget Wang An found—the one he had peed on—was an exception.

Wang An didn't know what kind of chemical reaction his urine had with that gold nugget, but a whole day had passed, and the stench of urine on that nugget still hadn't dissipated.

Seeing the tail-less fox show no reaction after sniffing the gold nugget, Wang An put it away.

To tell the truth, Wang An was just bored out of his mind at this moment, wanting to find some amusement, so he didn't mind the tail-less fox's lack of reaction.

It was just that Wang An's mouth wouldn't stay idle; as he put the gold nugget away, he muttered:

"You fox, you're good for nothing. You can't even find a piece of gold, and you call yourself an Immortal? You're just a freeloading Immortal, damn it."

This was only because the fox couldn't understand human speech. If it could, the tail-less fox would surely have had a few words for Wang An.

Calling the fox "buddy" when asking for a favor, then saying it's a freeloader when it seems useless—wasn't that a bit too much?

Flicking his finished cigarette butt into the river, Wang An stood up from the rock. After scanning left and right, Wang An picked up his iron shovel.

Just as Wang An lowered his head to pick up the shovel, he felt a shadow fly past his eyes. Startled, Wang An didn't even pick up the shovel, but instead whipped out his Type 54 pistol.

Wang An looked up and focused his eyes, only to realize it was the tail-less fox darting away.

After Wang An raised his gun and scanned the area once more, he slowly put the Type 54 away and shouted irritably at the tail-less fox, which had already run far off: "Are you sick in the head? You scared the hell out of me, damn it."

In truth, the reason Wang An reacted this way was because he thought some wild beast had lunged out. After all, the incident with the bear happened just yesterday; if he were to be pounced on by some beast again, that would truly be a case of "getting screwed by a dog"!

However, to Wang An's shouting, the tail-less fox didn't even look back, continuing to run forward.

Wang An thought the tail-less fox wanted to return to its den and didn't take it to heart, so he bent down again to pick up the iron shovel.

Just after Wang An stood up, he heard the fox's cry, and the sound was quite loud.

Wang An looked in the direction of the sound and saw the tail-less fox crying out at him, circling as it did so, looking extremely impatient.

Looking at the tail-less fox, which was acting strangely, Wang An's heart suddenly stirred, and a sense of expectation welled up within him.

And so, Wang An dragged his shovel and walked toward the tail-less fox.

Seeing Wang An walking toward it, the tail-less fox first stopped and waited for a while, then continued running forward, looking back at Wang An from time to time as it ran, seemingly to confirm whether Wang An was still following it.

Thus, in this uninhabited mountain range, a very bizarre scene unfolded.

A fox was running in front, while a man dragged an iron shovel, chasing behind. The whole scene looked like a person chasing a chicken-stealing fox.

Soon, the fox crossed the river at a narrower point.

It had to be said, although the fox itself wasn't large, with one leap, it covered a full 4 meters.

Of course, a distance of over 4 meters was nothing to the fox, but to Wang An, it was even less of an issue.

After all, back in his third year of middle school, Wang An's triple jump record was already 8 meters.

After crossing the river, Wang An followed the tail-less fox on another run. After climbing over a ridge and reaching a mountain hollow, the tail-less fox finally stopped its steps.

This mountain hollow was, in fact, the one where the river shown on the deer-skin map was located—the hollow between the one where Wang An and the others were currently panning for gold.

In other words, countless years ago, the river had also flowed through this hollow.

And the place where the tail-less fox stopped was in front of a large rock.

This large rock looked like a large vat lying on its side, and it looked quite heavy.

Wang An, panting for breath, looked at this large rock and subconsciously asked the tail-less fox:

"What's the meaning of this? Is there a gold nugget under this big rock?"
