Chapter 110: Heaven-Defying Luck (Bonus Chapter 2)

~8 min read 1,429 words

They consciously increased the time they spent together. On the morning of the fifth day, Chen Xun had to return to the military camp. Their time together was scarce, and there was no telling when he would return next.

But the translation progress could not be delayed. She had no choice but to carve out time at night; after translating documents for four hours, she finally climbed onto the kang to sleep.

"Is this a trap you set?" Chen Xun looked at the trap, which had a military style to it. He was feeling a bit curious now.

"Wow, not bad! I actually caught a silly roe deer in the very first trap." An Yinan widened her eyes.

This first trap was located too far on the outskirts, and very few prey came down from the mountain. Most of the time, she only caught wild rabbits, but since it was on the path to the other traps, she had never given up on it.

She hadn't expected a big one to come along today.

Chen Xun looked at the dead roe deer. Was the roe deer too silly? Or was the girl beside him just possessed of heaven-defying luck?

An Yinan was just about to pick up the silly roe deer when a tall figure beat her to it, lifting the roe deer up with one hand.

An Yinan was stunned for a moment, then quickly moved to reset the trap.

The two of them went straight to the second trap. Looking at the footprints in the snow, she casually caught a few rabbits, all of which Chen Xun tossed into the large basket on his back.

The second trap: a deer.

Chen Xun seemed to understand how Zhang Qian felt.

"Is your harvest always like this every time?" he couldn't help but ask.

"Hmm? Not entirely. Maybe it's because we're together, so our luck is better?" Honestly, she couldn't think of any other explanation.

After all, in the two traps they had encountered since they started walking, both had been large game.

And while her luck was indeed better than usual when she was with Zhang Qian, it wasn't this heaven-defying.

Hearing the little girl say this, the corners of Chen Xun's mouth curled up slightly. When they were together, their luck was very good.

When they reached the third trap, their good luck hadn't vanished; a deer lay there, already frozen stiff.

……

By the time they reached the fifth trap, Chen Xun looked at the prey in his hands, which was already slightly stiff. Was this luck a bit too heaven-defying?

Five traps, five large pieces of game.

"Don't move." Suddenly hearing a sound, Chen Xun said softly in An Yinan's ear.

An Yinan was stunned for a moment, then stopped her footsteps and the movements of her hands. She listened carefully to the sound. A full minute passed before she heard the faint noise.

Was this the gap between her and a soldier?

A one-minute gap was enough to kill her hundreds of times over.

"Wild boar," Chen Xun whispered. He had already slowly placed his prey on the ground just moments ago.

In this freezing weather, frozen prey wouldn't give off a bloody scent. The wild boar had just come out to forage as usual, never expecting to run into a pair of demons.

"Stone," Chen Xun said quickly.

Without a second thought, An Yinan threw the stone in her hand quickly. The target: the wild boar's eye.

The completely unguarded wild boar was suddenly struck in the eye by the stone. With a wild shriek, it charged forward violently; this was a bodily instinct.

Chen Xun immediately drew the military dagger strapped to his wrist. Watching the charging wild boar, he jumped directly onto its body. As the wild boar ran frantically, he held onto its neck for dear life.

An Yinan didn't stay idle; the stones in her hand were thrown continuously, striking the wild boar all over its body.

"Watch out!" Seeing the direction the wild boar was charging, Chen Xun shouted loudly.

An Yinan narrowed her eyes slightly. Because Chen Xun was there, she didn't dare take a dagger out of her space. She had long since grabbed a handy tree branch from the side. With its sharp end pointed forward, she didn't dodge as the wild boar charged at her.

"Nan Nan, get out of the way!" Chen Xun's eyes were red at this moment. Watching An Yinan, who seemed frozen with fear, he pulled out his dagger and stabbed the wild boar again.

He wanted to control the wild boar's forward pace or change its direction.

But the one-eyed wild boar seemed to hold a grudge against An Yinan, the human who had destroyed one of its eyes at the start.

She was the only target it could see with its naked eye.

An Yinan took a deep breath; she probably couldn't keep up the act of being a delicate girl anymore.

Holding the sharp tree branch, she quickly lunged forward, shifting her body to the side, but the sharp branch pierced through the wild boar's throat.

At the same time, Chen Xun's military dagger also pierced directly into the wild boar's heart.

The wild boar crashed to the ground with a boom.

An Yinan stood up with a beaming smile. Chen Xun walked over quickly and pulled An Yinan into his arms. His heart was beating violently. Fear—the last time he had experienced this emotion was when she saved Yun Shen.

An Yinan felt that tight embrace; although it was very warm, she was having a little trouble breathing.

Is love suffocating? Is that what it means?

"Cough, cough, if you keep doing this, I'm going to suffocate," An Yinan had to speak up.

Chen Xun's heart hadn't calmed down, but he subconsciously loosened his arms a little bit. However, he didn't let his arms drop; he remained in the posture of hugging her.

"Nan Nan, don't take risks in the future, okay?" Chen Xun rested his chin on the top of her head, feeling her breathing. His voice was very soft, as if he were afraid of scaring the person in his arms.

An Yinan didn't make a sound. Chen Xun pulled her away a little, wanting to see the expression on her face.

"Chen Xun, being a soldier is very dangerous. For my sake, stop being a soldier, okay?" An Yinan looked into his eyes.

He was stunned for a moment, then understood what she meant.

Just as he couldn't let go of the army, she couldn't let go of her freedom.

She didn't want to lie, nor did she want to coax him.

She had never been a canary; she was an eagle. Perhaps not a mighty eagle, but she longed to soar freely.

"Before doing anything dangerous, think of me, think of Beibei, think of our mother, and protect yourself." Chen Xun didn't force her; how could he bear to force her?

"Okay," An Yinan agreed, the corners of her mouth curling up slightly. So, he understood.

Regarding this matter, they didn't speak again.

"Let's go quickly. In a while, large animals will smell the scent and all come over," An Yinan poked the arm wrapped around her with her finger.

Chen Xun held her tighter, resting his head on top of hers, "Let me hold you a little longer."

An Yinan didn't answer. Chen Xun also knew that the bloody scent was very dangerous in this mountain forest, and it would only be for a short while.

Chen Xun simply cut a few branches, used frozen vines to secure them, and placed the wild boar onto the sled.

The basket held wild rabbits, one hand carried game, and the sled pulled a wild boar weighing a full three hundred jin.

It was only because he had great strength; otherwise, how could these things be brought down?

An Yinan carried two pieces of game in one hand, acting as if nothing were the matter; she had long since grown accustomed to this level of weight.

"Did you two go hunting in the Back Mountain?" Zhang Qian asked with wide eyes.

Chen Xun looked at the talkative Zhang Qian, "Except for the wild boar, everything else was in Nan Nan's traps."

Zhang Qian was indeed stunned; he had always known about An Yinan's luck with hunting, but who could one reason with regarding such luck?

Looking at the person showing off so smugly, it seemed even less wise to try and reason with him.
