Chapter 166: Dear, Eat Your Meal

~7 min read 1,389 words

Sun Xiuzhen looked at Company Commander Liu's wife, whose face was mean-spirited, and she really couldn't be bothered to engage, "Your brain must be fried."

As soon as she finished speaking, she picked up the bag in her hand and walked out of the Military District gate.

She had a proper job and had to commute back and forth every day; it was already difficult enough in this ice and snow, so how could she have the spare time to deal with a bunch of gossips?

"Pah, look at that swaying walk; those who know think she's married, those who don't would think she's a young maiden. Who is she swaying for all day long?" Once the person had left, Company Commander Liu's wife shifted the topic from Zhang Qingqing and Chen Xun to Sun Xiuzhen.

Captain Wang's wife didn't dare to interject; Sun Xiuzhen's husband was a Deputy Company Commander, a higher rank than her own husband, so she only dared to gossip behind her back. If it really reached the front, her husband would beat her to death.

An Yinan knew nothing of what was happening outside; recently, the National Compilation Bureau had sent over a large batch of documents, a full thirty-plus books that needed to be completely translated.

Aside from fixed times for eating and sleeping, she spent all her other time at the desk.

It wasn't until half a month later that she set down her pen for the last time, her whole body feeling as if her bones had scattered, and she slumped limply onto the desk.

"Finally finished." This large batch of materials was urgent, and the Project Department needed to use it urgently; no one could guarantee the translation time, so Fang Hong had no choice but to contact An Yinan.

An Yinan roughly estimated the time and, believing it was doable, accepted the task.

"Knock, knock, knock." The sound of knocking rang out, and An Yinan hurriedly threw on a cotton-padded jacket before going out to open the door.

"Leader, I'm here to pick up the materials." Yun Mo stood outside the gate, carrying three Password Cases.

An Yinan waved her hand, signaling for Yun Mo to come in; she didn't even have the strength to speak now.

"There, they're all over here; just pack them in order." An Yinan sat in the chair, watching Yun Mo pack the materials, her whole body feeling the weakness of someone just recovering from a serious illness.

"The Compilation Bureau's meaning is that you should be able to rest fully for a week," Yun Mo said in a low voice.

An Yinan waved her hand, "As long as there aren't any more of these life-threatening urgent tasks."

She could still survive.

Moreover, after she arrived at the Northeast Camp, aside from having some rest time in the first few days, she had entered a half-month-long task, and she only slept four or five hours a day. Chen Xun brought her meals, and sometimes when Chen Xun was busy with training, he would have Yun Shu deliver them.

After Yun Mo packed all the documents, he left Xiao Yuan, but he was seen by Company Commander Liu's wife when he left.

This place was the Northeast Military Region after all, and Yun Mo didn't take it to heart.

An Yinan took it even less to heart and even nodded at Company Commander Liu's wife, counting it as a greeting.

At noon, after Chen Xun finished training, he immediately went to the canteen to get food.

"Battalion Commander, your wife is here, why do you look even busier?"

"Exactly, delivering meals three times a day."

"You can't spoil a wife too much."

Some were teasing, while others were speaking their true thoughts, but Chen Xun turned a deaf ear.

Upon hearing this, Zhang Qian cursed angrily, "Are the wives in your homes the same as the Battalion Commander's wife? Get lost and go eat."

"What's wrong with you lately?" Zhang Qian cursed the group away and placed his hand on Chen Xun's shoulder, looking at the somewhat absent-minded Chen Xun.

Chen Xun looked at Zhang Qian, "I always thought being a soldier was hard, but ever since Nan Nan came to the camp, she sleeps less than five hours a day, spends all day hunched over the desk, and tries to eat and drink as little as possible. Only then did I realize her daily state."

He looked at the busy An Yinan, feeling an unprecedented heartache in his heart.

Zhang Qian patted Chen Xun's shoulder, "Don't we also go ten days or half a month without sleep when we're on a mission? Now that you're married, why have you become so sentimental?"

Chen Xun swatted his hand away, "I'm going to deliver food to my wife."

Once the words fell, he had already strode out of the canteen.

An Yinan looked at the empty desk and only then realized that since arriving at the camp, she hadn't spent much time with Chen Xun.

Just then, Chen Xun pushed the door open and walked in from outside.

As soon as he opened the door, he saw An Yinan running quickly to the doorway. The little girl had been staying up late these past few days; her eyes were a bit listless and her dark circles were showing, but that pretty appearance still made his heart beat uncontrollably, losing its original rhythm.

"Finished?"

"Finished training?"

Both of their words came out at the same time, and then they fell into a brief silence.

Chen Xun hurriedly strode forward, then gripped An Yinan's waist. Amidst her exclamation, she was lifted up by Chen Xun and held in his arms like a child.

"What are you doing? Put me down." An Yinan was very embarrassed; it wasn't a bridal carry, but a way of holding her like a child, which made her feel a bit at a loss.

Chen Xun didn't speak, nor did he put her down, but instead carried her directly into the room.

Afterward, he placed An Yinan on the chair.

"Eat properly." With these four words, the man took off his military overcoat, took the lunchbox out from his chest, and placed it on the table.

"Have you eaten?" An Yinan looked at her watch; it seemed like training had just ended at this time? "Together?"

"Okay." Chen Xun's expression softened, and he nodded.

An Yinan was just about to get off the chair to get bowls and chopsticks when she was stopped by the man. She saw him stride toward the kitchen and quickly bring back bowls and chopsticks.

An Yinan only scooped out one bowl of rice and vegetables, then pushed the entire lunchbox toward Chen Xun.

"Can you get full?" Chen Xun looked at her in confusion, then looked at the rice in the bowl; it seemed like the appetite of a small kitten...

An Yinan nodded, "I can."

She sat there day after day without any exercise, so she wasn't hungry to begin with; a bowl of rice like this was usually enough.

Chen Xun nodded, but he picked up An Yinan's bowl.

An Yinan widened her eyes, "That's mine! That's yours!"

Her small finger pointed at her own bowl, then pointed at the aluminum lunchbox.

Chen Xun looked at the girl who seemed to have her fur standing on end and said gently, "I know."

Then he picked up a small spoon, dug a spoonful from the bowl, and brought it to An Yinan's lips.

An Yinan's face turned red in a "whoosh," starting from her earlobes, to her face, to her neck, looking very much like a wildfire spreading.

"You..." An Yinan was just about to speak when she was fed a mouthful of rice.

She couldn't say a word!

"Rest, rest, I'll feed you." Chen Xun seemed to know what An Yinan was going to say and answered on his own.

An Yinan pouted her little mouth, her whole person flushed a light red, and she acted spoiled as she lifted her foot, "My feet are frozen."

Chen Xun looked at her with amusement, then reached her foot inside his jacket, placing her crystal-clear little foot against his stomach; when he felt the chill, he frowned slightly.

"Be good, eat first, open your mouth," Chen Xun coaxed.
