Chapter 60: The Tsundere Captain

~8 min read 1,452 words

"Aunt Li, I'm going to go tell Uncle Niu! I'm leaving now." While speaking, An Yinan had already walked out of the Captain's house.

Aunt Li, behind her, looked at her old man, "You wanted to help, did you really have to be so stubborn?"

The Captain poked the bowl of his tobacco pouch with a small wooden stick, "Is it me being stubborn? It's that girl who has a stubborn temper!"

In any case, he wouldn't admit it; he was just a bit sulky.

"Is this your first day knowing that girl's temper? Didn't you already know last night?" Aunt Li found it somewhat amusing.

"Hmph!" The Captain gave a cold snort and said no more.

An Yinan went to Uncle Niu's house, told Uncle Niu about chartering the cart tomorrow, and then returned to the Educated Youth Point.

Having made a trip to the County, she couldn't just go for nothing. After telling Beibei she was going to translate and not to disturb her if nothing was wrong, she dove into her space.

It was mainly because the light in the space was better, and there was no need to waste candles.

First, she made one hundred square scarves; the entire process took less than an hour.

Then she took out the translation materials given by Uncle Chen. Without hesitation, she quickly set her pen to paper. She didn't leave the space for the entire day. Looking at the four translated books, she silently put away the translation materials for two of them, truly afraid of startling Uncle Chen...

"Sister." Beibei looked at An Yinan with some worry.

An Yinan rubbed Beibei's hair; it still felt soft, "It's fine, I'm not done yet, but I'm going to the City tomorrow to haul some grain, so I'll translate a bit more today to take to the bookstore directly tomorrow."

"Don't get too tired." Beibei still said firmly. In order to translate and earn money, his sister hadn't even come out to eat at noon, busy for the whole day.

"Alright, I'll be careful in the future." An Yinan nodded. Today, she just didn't want to make a wasted trip; after all, if she delivered some translation materials, she could receive some more.

The two siblings simply cooked some millet porridge and then heated up a few Deer Meat Buns.

She scooped some kimchi into a small bowl and placed it on the dining table. Then she scooped half a bowl more, filled a bowl with millet porridge, and took two Deer Meat Buns directly to Xie Yuanyuan's room.

"Here, dinner." An Yinan looked at the little girl, who was frowning and deep in thought, "What's wrong?"

Xie Yuanyuan put down her pen and took a breath, "Writing a letter to my Lao Xie, thinking about how to explain moving out of the Educated Youth Station."

She definitely had to tell him, but the wording couldn't make Lao Xie worry, otherwise she couldn't guarantee whether Lao Xie would come running over.

"I can't help you with this, eat first and think slowly." An Yinan thought of that heavy fatherly love and expressed that she was unable to help.

After delivering to the little girl, she scooped another half bowl of spicy cabbage and four Deer Meat Steamed Buns, plus a large bowl of millet porridge, and carried them to Zhang Qian's room.

An Yinan knocked on the door and heard the voices inside pause. Then Zhang Qian came to open the door. When he saw An Yinan, he visibly felt relieved.

"If it's not enough to eat, come to my place to get more; there's still some left." An Yinan asked nothing and said nothing. She had an idea of Zhang Qian's status, and the people in his room had nothing to do with her. Some things were better left unknown; after all, curiosity could kill the cat!

Returning to her room, An Yinan and Beibei ate dinner, while at this moment in Zhang Qian's room...

"Meat buns from the State-run Restaurant." Chen Xun directly made the final decision.

Zhang Qian thought for a moment and nodded, "An Yinan goes to the County every week, and every time she comes back, she brings a lot of buns and Steamed Buns."

Chen Xun calculated secretly. By this count, well, he would have to take on more missions, otherwise how could he afford to support this little girl?

"Tell Nan Nan tomorrow that she can go up the mountain." Chen Xun had only returned to the village this afternoon, but he had shown his face during the mission and could not appear in the open, let alone see An Yinan, otherwise, it would bring her danger and trouble.

The leads in the County had been removed, but no one could guarantee there were no fish that slipped through the net. Everything should still be based on safety.

"Mm." Zhang Qian nodded, then looked at Chen Xun again, "Boss, why do I feel like you're not acting right?"

They had worked together for many years; with just one look, the other would instinctively cooperate.

In the Northeast Military Region, everyone called them Light and Shadow, because where light moves, shadow follows.

But during missions, their identities switched at any time, yet no matter who was the light and who was the shadow, they would cooperate seamlessly.

"I smell the scent of prey." Chen Xun gave a cold laugh, then pulled open the door and disappeared into the gradually darkening night.

And Zhang Qian, realizing the meaning of that sentence, discovered that besides a bowl of porridge, nothing was left...

"That animal!" Zhang Qian gritted his teeth and cursed to himself.

Early the next morning, the ox cart stopped at the entrance of the Educated Youth Station. An Yinan jumped directly onto the ox cart, and Uncle Niu pulled the cart to the County.

When they arrived at the County, the sky wasn't quite bright yet. An Yinan went to the State-run Restaurant first.

"Liu Meijie, I might have to trouble Ershu. I want to order two hundred meat buns." An Yinan felt a bit embarrassed; after all, she had just taken one hundred Deer Meat Buns yesterday, and here she was troubling Liu Meijie again today.

Liu Mei thought for a long while before saying to An Yinan, "I'll go to the back kitchen and ask Ershu first to see if anyone from above has ordered meals. If no one has, everyone can help out and get them made."

Now that people were coming and going, it wasn't suitable for them to chat for too long, "Then I'll come back after eight o'clock."

There were twenty people in total building the house. She planned to give each person a meat bun for three days; ten days would use up about seventy.

First, her space grain was different; she couldn't take it out and could only eat it with Beibei. Second, she had the ability to let the villagers eat a little better. Third, regarding the matter of moving out of the Educated Youth Courtyard, the Captain and the villagers had all helped, and she was very grateful.

An Yinan went to the Xinhua Bookstore first, waiting for Chen Shao to come to work.

Chen Shao came to work very early. Although the higher-ups required the doors to open at 7:30, he arrived at the bookstore at 7:00 every time to clean up, check the weather, and air out the books in order to prevent them from getting damp and moldy after being stored for too long.

"Eh, why did you come to the County today? Did something happen?" Chen Shao asked anxiously.

Before yesterday, he regarded An Yinan as a pitiful person sent to the countryside, and it didn't hurt to take care of her a bit more.

Yesterday, An Yinan saved his wife. He viewed An Yinan as a junior and also as a benefactor. In short, she was one of his own, and if she needed his help with anything, he would find a way to assist.

"Uncle Chen, it's nothing major. I've translated two magazines. Could I trouble you to mail them to the City for me, and get me a few more materials that need translating?" An Yinan said with a smile.

Seeing her expression, Chen Shao felt relieved. If it was just about translation, that was easy to handle. After all, ever since their bookstore had a translator, translation materials were constantly being mailed over. There were still over twenty magazines piled up in the back. He was also afraid that An Yinan would lose them, making it hard to explain later, not to mention, who could translate that fast?
