Chapter 78: Grain Distribution Day

~8 min read 1,451 words

An Yinan only then reacted; fine, not seeing this bunch of annoying people, it actually felt quite nice.

"My courage fluctuates; fine, I plan to move over tomorrow. If you all are sending grain, just send it directly over there." An Yinan was too lazy to move things back and forth; in any case, they didn't have many belongings, and moving tomorrow would only take an hour.

She had originally wanted to seal off the small door in the passageway, but Ershu Xie suggested leaving the small door as is, instead building a separate earthen wall outside the small door to unilaterally seal it off. If she wanted to dismantle it later, she would just need to move the earthen wall, and that small door could still be opened.

An Yinan planned to build a small wall after the grain distribution, but Ershu Xie took the job upon himself, saying he wouldn't take a cent for anything.

"Are you moving tomorrow? We have to go to the Daduibu to line up. Basically, the Educated Youth Station is the last to distribute grain. Even if we know we're at the back, we still have to go and line up." Li Xiue was a bit troubled.

An Yinan patted her shoulder. It was fortunate for this girl to have been sent down to Quanshui Village; if it had been another village with many wicked people, she would have long since been picked clean.

"I have few things, and moving them myself won't even take an hour. Tomorrow, I don't even plan to leave Beibei at home; you all just go ahead and line up." The reason An Yinan decided on this day on a whim was because there would be no one at the Educated Youth Station, allowing her to use her space to move, which would save so much trouble and she wouldn't have to worry about being seen.

"Are you sure that's okay? I won't go line up tomorrow, I'll just go over at the end to collect the grain. Anyway, my Lao Xie always provides support." Xie Yuanyuan was a bit worried; although she loved joining in the excitement, Nan Nan's affairs were more important.

"Sure, sure. Wouldn't it be more fulfilling to see the grain earned by your own ability? Later, go to the Post Office and send some back to your Lao Xie, let him taste the grain his daughter harvested." An Yinan comforted her.

Xie Yuanyuan nodded, "Alright, your reasoning has convinced me, then I'll go line up tomorrow."

An Yinan didn't go out that day either; aside from eating her meals as usual, she locked herself in her room. Beibei knew his sister was translating.

And An Yinan was indeed translating, though she was inside her space. In these two days, she had already finished translating one book; the material was vast, comparable to the previous five magazines.

That thick stack of white paper used about eight hundred sheets, and that didn't even include the pictures in the books. These books were foreign textbooks, likely rubbings made by overseas students and then shipped back to the country.

She knew these materials were extremely important for Huaxia, and time was pressing. With more materials, she could guide the country's rapid development. Development in machinery didn't just represent scientific research; it would also drive technology and the economy.

Thinking of this, An Yinan felt even more urgent. Her speed was what it was, and since she had her middle school grades on record, her English was quite good, so she wasn't afraid of those people probing her.

The next day, as soon as the sky brightened, let alone the Educated Youth Station, the entire Quanshui Village became lively. Today was the day of grain distribution, a grand joyous event of the year.

An Yinan rarely slept until ten o'clock before slowly getting out of bed. Last night, she had already told Beibei to go to the Cowshed to study and not to worry about the moving. After two refusals, Beibei knew his sister had made up her mind. He got up very early, heated up some steamed buns, and with a bun in one hand and a book in the other, he walked quickly toward the Cowshed.

She first put everything into her space, then looked at the empty room and thought of when she first arrived in Quanshui Village. She had gone to quite some trouble for this room, and it was also then that she met Auntie Li and Ershu Xie's family. Now, several months later, the distance between everyone had vanished, and they got along much more comfortably.

But this room was now empty.

Without too much sadness, she observed her surroundings and discovered there wasn't a soul at the Educated Youth Station. She threw all the firewood she had gathered into her space, then walked out of the Educated Youth Station through the small passageway door. After opening the small door, she locked it from the direction of the vegetable garden, and only then did she pass by the vegetable garden to walk to her own courtyard.

Seeing the brand-new and spacious courtyard, her previously heavy mood felt a bit better.

She arranged everything neatly and put the firewood into the woodshed, even taking five extra bundles of firewood from her space to stack with the previous ones, making it impossible to tell how much there was.

She then moved the sauerkraut and kimchi jars to the storage room and hung the six rabbits she had air-dried recently on the hooks prepared in advance.

"Right, the pot!" An Yinan placed the new pot on the stove; the size of the pot was standard, and it fit perfectly on the stove.

There was no need to clean either; after she pasted the newspapers yesterday, Xiue and Yuanyuan had helped her clean it once more. Now it looked clean and spacious, though it felt a little empty inside the room.

The corridor shelves that were originally packed full at the Educated Youth Station had all been moved by her to the storage room behind the house, leaving the living room empty instead.

She believed it would be filled up bit by bit by her in the future.

"A housewarming, what should I make?" An Yinan thought for a moment, and a recipe came to mind.

But she needed to go buy a pig's head, and she also needed to buy some pork to pull the wool over people's eyes. Chen Xun said he loved eating meat sauce; his meat sauce was only a spoonful at a time, he wouldn't even give it to a god, and that was how he made it last half a month!

This time she could simmer a bit more and mail some extra to her godmother, godfather, and eldest brother and sister-in-law.

She could also keep some in a small jar for herself; later, if she was in a rush to make noodles or something, she could just scoop out a spoonful of meat sauce—it would be absolutely delicious.

Thinking of this, An Yinan secretly made up her mind to buy more meat. On one hand, it was to pull the wool over people's eyes, and on the other, the pork in this era was more fragrant. Without the hormones and drugs of later generations, it didn't have so much fat, but was instead a perfect mix of fat and lean.

"Nan Nan." Just as An Yinan finished scrubbing the pot, Auntie Li's loud voice came from outside.

Just now, in order to move things, she had simply locked the courtyard gate, fearing someone might see items appearing or disappearing out of thin air and take her away as some kind of monster or demon.

"Auntie Li, come in quickly." An Yinan cleared the way, and Brother Li and Brother Xie each pushed a small cart from outside into the courtyard.

"Where should this grain be put?" Auntie Li asked, "Let these two big boys move it for you. Although you have strength, a young girl should be pampered."

After the Captain was injured and retired from his mission, his health had issues, and they never had a second child, only Brother Li. Auntie Li loved daughters, and seeing An Yinan, that soft and sweet little girl, she couldn't help but feel doting.

"It needs to be put in the storage room in the back." An Yinan didn't even need to point; Brother Xie and Brother Li each shouldered a sack and pushed the door open to go to the back room.

Both of them were there when the house was built, so they both knew the structure of the house.
