Chapter 433 – New Spells

~7 min read 1,347 words

Damion did not return to his spell crafting until the next day, deciding instead to spend the evening playing with Helge until the toddler was tucked into bed. When he resumed crafting Summon Fire, he did so with a content heart.

Having both Summon Earth and Summon Ice as references, constructing Summon Fire was considerably easier than creating an entirely new spell. Given the similarities of the spells, he was able to easily tell which elements would transfer to the new spell and which would have to be altered or completely replaced since it was a Fire affinity spell and not Earth or Ice. The biggest hurdle Damion ran into was that both Ice and Earth were tangible. This meant certain other parts of the magic seal had to be adjusted as well to allow for Fire to be summoned and maintained.

By the end of the third day, Damion succeeded and he was happily greeted with notifications from the Magic System for his success.

The small bit of credits and experience for the System no longer phased Damion. He had over nine million credits currently and was a tenth of the way to unlocking the fifth level of the Magic System. He was confident he had enough credits to do whatever he wanted and that, given time, he would reach the final level of the Magic System.

With his new spell complete, Damion did not hesitate to try it out. Leaving his study he again headed outside the city and began casting. Fire flared to life around him, altering shape and form as he continued to channel magic into the spell. He had long since been able to control spells he cast through his will, but now that he understood the finer principles of Nashto he was not so much forcing his will on a spell as he was telling it what he wanted and having it do precisely that.

With Summon Fire completed, Damion decided to try his hand at a Spatial spell. Since his Spatial affinity was now at the same level as his Ice affinity he felt he needed a good offensive spell, the question was, what would such a spell look like.

Damion did not think making a summon spell for the Spatial affinity would be useful. At first he had considered it impossible, but he realized that what it would do would be essentially create a new dimension around him. This could be useful, trapping an opponent in a pocket of space he completely controlled, but he was not sure if creating such pocket dimensions would affect Realm Breaches, or even what would happen if he collapsed one in on itself, let alone what would happen to anything inside.

As great of a weapon the spell would be, there were too many unknowns, and he did not want to risk creating a situation that he could not undo. More research was required, but he felt when he had more time he would explore the possibility more thoroughly.

With that possibility put out of the equation, Damion considered how else he might create a purely offensive Spatial spell. Unfortunately, he kept coming back to the same problem. What happens if the spell he makes causes damage to Nerotath or Realm Breaches that he is in? Without a solution, Damion decided to consult with Mage Fletcher again at a later time to see if she had ever given thought to such spells or had an idea that would solve the potential problem.

Giving up on creating a new Spatial affinity spell, Damion moved on to his other A Rank affinities. He already had Summon Earth, so he decided instead to work on a spell for his Shadow affinity. Shadows, not being tangible, made the spell closer to Summon Fire than Summon Ice or Summon Earth, however, offensive Shadow spells often had the ability to go from intangible to tangible, such as with Shadow Blast and Shadow Blade.

Since Damion wanted his Shadow affinity spell to be versatile, able to shield him, just disrupt an opponent’s vision and capable of actually striking an enemy, it was not a simply spell to create. As Damion worked, he realized that while he understood Nashto and how to create the spell he wanted, his A Rank affinity was not enough to let him easily create the spell. Thankfully, he had an easy solution to the problem and he decided to apply the same solution to his Earth and Fire affinities as well.

‘System, purchase upgrades to increase my Fire, Earth and Shadow affinities to EX Rank.’

{Affirmative. Cost to increase three affinities to EX Rank is 649,322 credits.}

{Do you wish to proceed?}

‘Yes,’ Damion told the Magic System. He had expected a high cost, and thankfully he had more than enough credits to make the jump.

{Upgrades complete. Congratulations Host for acquiring EX Rank Fire, Earth and Shadow affinities.}

The sudden burst of understanding Damion received when his affinities rose was familiar to him. The same had happened when he increased his Spatial affinity. Even though his understanding of Nashto was perfect, his understanding of an affinity was limited by the Rank he had for the affinity. Now that he had boosted his Rank, he could better understand his new Summon Fire spell as well as know how to better use his various Earth spells.

As for the Shadow affinity spell he was trying to create, Damion instantly knew where he had been going wrong and what he needed to do to create the spell he wanted. He began working on the spell again and after just another day of work on it, he was able to complete the spell.

Considering that Shadows could be both solid and ethereal, Summon Shadows being a tier 4 spell was not too surprising to Damion. He was actually a bit surprised the Summon Fire had not turned out the same way, but when he reviewed the magic seal again he realized that the fire he summoned with his spell never truly turned solid. It could be condensed and brought to a state very close to being solid, but fire would no longer be fire if it was solid, though now he had the question of how was a shadow still a shadow if it was solid?

Deciding to find out for himself, Damion Portaled himself further from Atlantis to cast his new spell. Despite it being a clear and sunny day, when he cast the spell and shadows burst to life around him, it seemed the entire world grew darker. Shadows circle around Damion like a whirlwind. At will he could change them from being nothing more than mist to being a solid defensive shield or even spraying them outward from his body was darts or blades.

The shadows completely surrounded him and obscured him from view, but with True Sight, Damion was still able to easily see his surroundings, but he was sure that even without the aid of the passive spell he would know from the shadows he created what was happening around him.

In the distance Damion could sense Mage Thresbane coming towards him. No doubt the SS Rank Shadow mage had detected the eruption of his affinity close by and was coming to investigate. Damion released his spell and the world seemed to return to its previously bright day while he waited for the older mage to arrive.
