Chapter 114: If He Dies, I Won't Live Either
Cheng Xi's heart felt heavy as she hurried toward Sixiang Peak, with Precious Flower and Beacon Fire following closely behind. Along the way, the wind whistled in her ears; her mind was entirely occupied by Cheng Yunjian's disappearance, various speculations surfacing in her thoughts only to be dismissed one by one.
Just as she stepped into the territory of Sixiang Peak, she saw Cheng Fenglan standing in the courtyard, brows locked in a frown, her expression grave. Cheng Xi stepped forward quickly, and before she could speak, Cheng Fenglan spoke first: "I have already sent people to search everywhere, but there has been no news yet."
Cheng Xi took a deep breath, struggling to calm herself down. "Cheng Yunjian is usually cautious in his actions; his sudden disappearance must have a reason. Where did you get the news? Did Jiang Weiran tell you?"
Cheng Fenglan turned her head to look at Cheng Xi, her eyes slightly red; not wanting to be seen in her moment of incompetence and weakness, she immediately turned her head away again.
Her only relative in this world was her brother.
If something happened to him, she would not be able to go on living either.
"Yes, my brother left Jindu Academy and arrived at Wanxing City. The day I came down the mountain, I happened to run into them," Cheng Fenglan explained.
Cheng Xi nodded, and just as she was about to speak, she heard Cheng Fenglan say, "Thank you for this."
"No need to thank me; your brother did things for me, so he has already repaid the favor," Cheng Xi replied to her.
Cheng Fenglan was silent for a moment, but still said, "It's different."
Cheng Xi frowned. What was different?
As the two were talking, Jiang Weiran hurried over. Seeing Cheng Xi, he said with a complex expression, "Cheng Xi, I'm sorry. I was tracking some clues with Cheng Yunjian when we were suddenly attacked midway. By the time I shook those people off, he was gone."
Cheng Xi waved her hand. "This is not your fault. Did you see the appearance of the attackers clearly? Or did you discover any special clues?"
Jiang Weiran recalled, "Those people were masked, their cultivation was not low, and their methods were ruthless; one look and you could tell they were well-trained. However, during the fight, I noticed a strange tattoo on one of their arms, like some kind of symbol, but I have never seen it before."
A symbol?
Cheng Xi was startled and took out a piece of jade. "Is it this?"
Jiang Weiran looked closely and immediately nodded, saying, "That's it. Where did you get it?"
"The City Lord's Mansion," Cheng Xi said.
The City Lord's Mansion?
"Didn't the City Lord's Mansion get destroyed?" Jiang Weiran asked, his expression very ugly.
"The City Lord's Mansion was destroyed, but that doesn't mean all the members of the Ji Family are dead."
"I'm going to find Ji Tang," Cheng Fenglan said, taking off at a run.
"Wait, Ji Tang ran away long ago; I just came from Xuanyin Peak."
Cheng Fenglan's expression was very ugly, and she then looked at Cheng Xi with a blank face. "Then what about my brother?"
Just then, a Transmission Talisman flew over. Cheng Fenglan reached out to catch it, and her expression instantly became even uglier.
"What happened?" Jiang Weiran asked hurriedly, seeing that Cheng Xi's expression was not good.
"Cheng Yunjian might have been captured and taken into Wanxing Mountain," Cheng Xi said.
The recent events at Wanxing Mountain had long since spread everywhere, with rumors flying throughout the Academy, and with the four Deans gathered together, people had long been in a state of panic.
Cheng Fenglan almost fainted. She only hated that her own cultivation was low now, but even so, she had to enter the mountain to find her brother.
"I want to enter the mountain," Cheng Fenglan said, wiping away her tears and looking up at the two of them.
Cheng Xi glanced at her; she hadn't expected her to still have such courage now, which was rare.
Jiang Weiran grew anxious. "With our current third-rate skills, I'm afraid that if we enter the mountain, we won't be able to save anyone and will just end up getting ourselves killed too."
"Then I still have to go. Even if I die, I want to find my brother and die with him." Cheng Fenglan looked at Cheng Xi. "I know that even if I don't beg you, since you know about this matter and appeared here, you won't just ignore it. But I also know that you are very important right now."
Cheng Xi looked at Cheng Fenglan and did not speak for a moment, listening as she continued: "I only ask one thing of you: if my brother and I don't come back, when you see our remains one day, please bury us siblings together."
Cheng Xi looked at Cheng Fenglan, speechless. "They captured Cheng Yunjian probably to threaten me; he definitely won't be in mortal danger for a while. What are you going for? If you go, you'll either die or just become another hostage. If you go now and become a hostage, who do I choose to save when it comes time to save you or your brother?"
Cheng Fenglan's leg, which had been stepping out, stopped stiffly in mid-air. She turned her head to look at Cheng Xi—she was still so annoying!
Should she go or not?
Jiang Weiran was intimidated by Cheng Xi's aura and subconsciously took a step back, pulling Cheng Fenglan back as well. He advised her, "Cheng Xi makes sense. Although we are incompetent, we cannot add to her troubles. We can't do big things, but we can do small ones. Don't be impulsive."
Given Cheng Xi's foul temper—she had slashed his arm with a blade back then, and later dealt with Cheng Zhouxing and his wife in a few moves—if Cheng Fenglan caused her trouble, it was highly possible she would save no one.
This person could not be threatened; she would just flip the table.
Persuaded by Jiang Weiran, Cheng Fenglan remembered Cheng Xi's dog-like temper. She was silent for a moment, then looked up at her. "Then what can I do now?"
Cheng Xi was very satisfied with Jiang Weiran's awareness of current affairs, and also satisfied with Cheng Fenglan's sensibility, so she said directly, "They kidnapped Cheng Yunjian to threaten me, probably for the sake of the Wanxing Sect. I have always suspected a connection between Ye Wujin and Ji Hang. How about this: you two go to Wanxing City to continue gathering information, and I will make a trip into the mountain."
Cheng Fenglan wanted to say something else, but Jiang Weiran grabbed her and left. As they walked, he said to Cheng Xi, "We'll go right now. We'll tell you once we have news. You must be careful entering the mountain."
Cheng Xi watched as Jiang Weiran dragged Cheng Fenglan away like a dog chasing her; for a moment, she didn't know what to say.
Was she some kind of evil spirit?
As soon as Jiang Weiran and Cheng Fenglan entered Wanxing City, they felt an oppressive atmosphere.
There were few pedestrians on the streets, most shops were tightly shut, and the occasional Cultivator passing by in a hurry also looked vigilant.
The two couldn't help but look at each other; the collapse of the City Lord's Mansion had filled everyone's hearts with fear.
The two found a restaurant to stay at, and as soon as they sat down, they heard two Cultivators at the next table whispering.
"Have you heard? Some strange people have appeared in the city recently, acting weirdly. Who knows what they're up to."
"Indeed. Yesterday, I even saw a few men in black going in and out of the abandoned residence of the City Lord's Mansion. I got a bit closer and was almost discovered by them; I was so scared I ran away immediately."
Cheng Fenglan and Jiang Weiran exchanged a look. After finishing their meal calmly, they walked toward the ruins of the City Lord's Mansion.
Outside the ruins, the surroundings were silent, with only the sound of the wind whistling through the empty courtyard. Cheng Fenglan carefully pushed open the courtyard gate, and a foul odor rushed toward them.
As soon as the two stepped into the courtyard, they heard a faint sound of footsteps. Jiang Weiran immediately took out the Invisibility Talisman Cheng Xi had given him and, taking Cheng Fenglan with him, hid silently behind a broken wall to the side.
