Chapter 38: Injured

~8 min read 1,528 words

"Lord Jiang, why are you not speaking? Is there some difficult matter?"

Jiang Boyu sighed, "Eldest Miss Cheng, the State Duke Mansion was haunted last night. It is said to be the work of Cheng Laotaitai, and she has already been beaten until her soul was scattered by Yan Yu."

"There is such a thing?" Cheng Xi looked surprised, "In that case, the deaths of Cheng Zhouxing and his wife were also her doing?"

Jiang Boyu nodded.

Cheng Xi gave a faint sigh, "The grievances of their family have nothing to do with me anymore. However, I am just curious: why would Cheng Laotaitai go to the State Duke Mansion to cause trouble? She had no dealings with the State Duke Mansion while she was alive; it is truly baffling."

Jiang Boyu lowered his voice and said, "Eldest Miss Cheng, Cheng Laotaitai was pinned down by coffin nails; she could not have broken out of the coffin on her own. Someone helped her, which is how she was able to leave the coffin to seek revenge."

Cheng Xi suddenly realized, and looking at Jiang Boyu, she said, "You mean the person who let her out was Yan Yu?"

Jiang Boyu said, "It is hard to say without evidence, but the fact that Cheng Laotaitai went to the State Duke Mansion last night is also hard to explain."

Cheng Xi nodded solemnly, "I understand. Many thanks to Lord Jiang for the reminder."

"Our Division Master intended to come and remind you personally, Eldest Miss, but the Empress Dowager suddenly summoned him, and he could not get away, so he sent me to make the trip."

"Please thank the Division Master for me; I accept his kindness," Cheng Xi said sincerely.

Jiang Boyu carefully scrutinized Cheng Xi's expression and found nothing unusual. He couldn't help but mutter to himself that the Division Master was just too suspicious; what could Eldest Miss Cheng possibly have to do with last night's events?

He actually felt that Eldest Miss Cheng was truly unlucky; the people of the Cheng Family treated her poorly while alive, and even after death, they continued to cause her trouble.

"Lord Jiang, I would like to ask how Cheng Yunjian and his sister are doing now. Is it convenient to say?" Cheng Xi looked at Jiang Boyu and asked.

"After the commotion last night, the truth is basically clear, and the two of them already left the Tongtian Division this morning. From what I heard from Cheng Yunjian, it seems he intends to sell off the family property and take his sister to the Qinghe Academy," Jiang Boyu said.

Cheng Xi nodded slightly. Cheng Yunjian was still quite calm and acted decisively; leaving Jindu was indeed the correct course of action. Cheng Laotaitai causing such a scene at the State Duke Mansion had caused the Yan Family to lose a great deal of face; she feared that as soon as they were free, they would come to trouble the siblings.

Now that they had no backing in Jindu, they could only be at the mercy of Yan Yu. It would be better to take the opportunity to leave Jindu. Both siblings possessed talent; it would be the best strategy to return and demand justice once they had achieved success in their studies.

Cheng Xi gave the calming incense she had made to Jiang Boyu, "This is a token of gratitude for Lord Jiang; thank you for making this trip." She then handed him another box, "Please trouble Lord Jiang to give this box to the Division Master."

Jiang Boyu knew that Cheng Xi's skill in making incense was peerless—this was good stuff. He immediately reached out to take it and said with a smile, "I would be honored to comply. Many thanks, Eldest Miss."

Cheng Xi had Zhao Kang see Jiang Boyu out, and she sat back down on the lounge chair to continue basking in the sun.

Her ties with the Cheng Family ended right there.

In the future, there would likely be no chance to meet Cheng Yunjian and his sister again.

Only, she did not expect to be slapped in the face by noon; Cheng Yunjian brought Cheng Fenglan to bid her farewell.

Cheng Xi:...

She had not wanted to see them, but Zhao Kang had already led them in.

Upon seeing the two, her brows furrowed. No wonder Zhao Kang had led them in without asking her; the siblings were truly in a sorry state, both of them bearing injuries.

They certainly wouldn't have been tortured at the Tongtian Division, as they were the ones who reported the case.

"Were you taught a lesson by Yan Yu?" Cheng Xi's voice was somewhat cold.

Cheng Fenglan had suffered blow after blow and had lost her usual sharpness and pride. She was unwilling to look at Cheng Xi, not wanting to let her see her make a fool of herself.

However, her brother insisted on coming to bid Cheng Xi farewell, so she had no choice but to follow along; she dared not be left alone.

Cheng Fenglan kept her head down and said nothing, but Cheng Yunjian was poised and open. Looking at Cheng Xi, he said, "They are just some flesh wounds; they will be better in a few days. Feng Lan and I have sold the Cheng Family's property and are preparing to go to the Qinghe Academy to study for exams. Before leaving, I thought we should come and bid you farewell."

"We have no relationship anymore."

"I know," Cheng Yunjian smiled, "We have wronged you, but we have no other relatives. Since we are leaving, we had to tell you. In the future, we will be in different places; I hope we can both be well."

Facing Cheng Xi's indifferent expression, Cheng Yunjian did not mind. He smiled at Cheng Xi, then turned and left with his sister.

Cheng Xi felt irritable. If they were leaving, then leave—why come to bid her farewell?

Like strangers on the road, never to meet again.

"Jinxiang!"

"Eldest Miss," Jinxiang hurried over, "What are your orders?"

"Take the blue porcelain bottle on my vanity in the inner chamber and send it to them," Cheng Xi said with a cold face.

Minor injuries?

Injuries caused by Yan Yu would not be helped by ordinary medicine.

Seeing that the Eldest Miss was in a bad mood, Jinxiang dared not say anything more. She hurriedly agreed, dashed into the inner chamber, grabbed the bottle, and went to chase after Cheng Yunjian and his sister.

"Young Master, Second Miss, wait a moment."

Hearing Jinxiang's voice, Cheng Yunjian stopped and looked at the approaching Jinxiang, asking, "What is the matter?"

"This is what the Eldest Miss asked this servant to give to the Young Master and Second Miss." Jinxiang shoved the item into the Young Master's hand, not even looking at the Second Miss's face, and turned and ran away after delivering the item.

She still deeply resented the Second Miss for stealing the Eldest Miss's marriage.

Cheng Yunjian was slightly startled as he looked at the porcelain bottle. Beside him, Cheng Fenglan spoke up, "It's just a bottle, what's there to look at? Brother, let's go quickly; I don't want to be targeted by Yan Yu again."

Cheng Yunjian put the bottle away without saying anything and took his sister out of the city.

After leaving the city, he found a quiet place and took the porcelain bottle out again. Cheng Fenglan looked on, impatient, and said, "It's just a bottle, what is there to look at?"

Cheng Yunjian opened the bottle, held it to his nose to sniff it lightly, and opened his palm, from which two pills rolled out.

He swallowed one without hesitation. Cheng Fenglan couldn't even stop him, "You just ate it like that? What if it's poison?"

"It's not," Cheng Yunjian looked at his sister, "This medicine is useful for our wounds; I don't feel as much pain now."

Cheng Fenglan was stunned.

Cheng Yunjian said, "Big Sister must have seen that our wounds were unusual and that ordinary medicine would be useless. Feng Lan, Big Sister actually still cares about us in her heart."

Cheng Fenglan gritted her teeth; this was the funniest joke she had ever heard.

Cheng Yunjian stuffed the other pill into her mouth, "The road to Qinghe Academy is long and arduous; you cannot suffer this heart-piercing pain every day. We will just have to repay Big Sister's kindness when we have the chance in the future."

"How will we repay it?" Cheng Fenglan said with a wooden face.

As the pill went down, a cool sensation wound its way down her throat.

The sharp pain from her wounds indeed lessened significantly. Cheng Fenglan turned her head to look at Jindu; the tall, imposing city looked like a giant beast.

She would not admit defeat; she was unwilling to be looked upon as a joke by Cheng Xi for the rest of her life.

She would certainly be able to make a comeback, and the humiliation she suffered today would sooner or later be repaid tenfold or a hundredfold.
