Chapter 6: Lawless
Cheng Xi was escorted from Dali Temple to the Tongtian Division; the name of the Tongtian Division appeared often in the original owner's memories, and in her understanding, it was an extremely terrifying place.
If you have the life to enter, you may not have the life to leave.
Outside the Tongtian Division, Division Guards clad in black armor stood watch day and night, and the figure of a Bi'an flickered in and out of view above the main gate.
Cheng Xi looked up; the Bi'an distinguishes right from wrong and judges impartially, so it is often used as a mascot in front of government offices.
However, as she gradually drew closer, the figure of the Bi'an on the Tongtian Division gate became increasingly clear, and she faintly sensed that the Bi'an's eyes were moving as she walked.
Could it be alive?
It had been many years since Cheng Xi had seen a living Bi'an, and she was instantly interested, unable to resist taking another look.
As she looked, her gaze collided with the Bi'an's eyes; Cheng Xi's brows arched slightly, and the Bi'an's pupils stiffened.
She could actually see it?
The Bi'an's pair of True Dragon Pupils had seen countless human souls and demon spirits, distinguishing loyalty from treachery and judging demon souls at a glance, but the aura on this young girl...
Cheng Xi stepped through the gates of the Tongtian Division and was led by the Division Guards to the main hall.
A plaque with the words "Bright Mirror Hung High" hung above, and in the hall, over a dozen black-armored Division Guards with Long Blades at their waists stood in two rows, radiating a murderous aura; sitting on the high dais was a person wearing a python robe and a golden crown, whose sharp eyes were like blades, making Cheng Xi feel somewhat uncomfortable.
She averted her gaze and saw the Zhenguo Duke and his wife in the hall.
The Zhenguo Duke looked at her with a face full of shame, "Xixi, my good child, you have been wronged."
Cheng Xi spoke expressionlessly, "Lord Duke, I have already severed all ties with your noble house; it is inappropriate for you to address me in such a way."
The Zhenguo Duke's old face turned a mix of green and red, and he let out a heavy sigh.
The Zhenguo Duke's wife, however, looked at Cheng Xi with some dissatisfaction, "Even if your engagement to my son is broken, you are still a junior; that the Lord Duke is still willing to look after you is your good fortune."
"I'll return that 'good fortune' of repaying kindness with enmity to you, Madam Duke."
Jiang Boyu nearly failed to hold back his laughter; this Eldest Miss Cheng was quite interesting.
The Zhenguo Duke's wife was about to say something more when the Zhenguo Duke roared, "Shut up!" He then looked at Cheng Xi, "You are a good child; it is Weiran who lacks the fortune."
"I am glad you know that." Cheng Xi nodded slightly.
Even the Zhenguo Duke was left with a strange expression on his face, stifled by these words.
"Cheng Xi, why did you sever Jiang Weiran's arm?"
Cheng Xi could not quite grasp the situation; how could a case from Dali Temple be transferred to the Tongtian Division?
Seeing Eldest Miss Cheng actually spacing out, Jiang Boyu's face twitched, and he coughed lightly, saying, "Eldest Miss Cheng, our Chief is asking you a question."
Cheng Xi came back to her senses and looked up at the Chief of the Tongtian Division, "In reply to your words, my lord, that is indeed the case."
"I am asking you for what reason?"
"Jiang Weiran engaged in illicit relations with my stepsister, and thus broke off our engagement..."
"Cheng Xi, do not spout nonsense!" the Zhenguo Duke's wife shouted angrily, her face looking extremely ugly.
Great noble families value their reputation above all else; she had not expected Cheng Xi to be so bold, completely disregarding the reputation of the Zhenguo Duke Mansion and the Cheng Family to expose this matter.
Cheng Xi ignored the Zhenguo Duke's wife entirely and continued, "This matter is absolutely true; my lord may go to the Cheng Family and the Duke Mansion to verify it. If there is a single word of falsehood, this young woman is willing to accept punishment. Furthermore, my mother once saved Jiang Weiran's life, which is why the two families set the engagement."
"Jiang Weiran broke the engagement, so by rights, he should pay with his life; however, this young woman is kind-hearted, so I only took one of his arms. From this moment on, I have severed all ties with the Zhenguo Duke Mansion, and our debts and grievances are settled."
"Then why are you in prison?"
Li Zhi'an's voice was cold and crisp, carrying a sense of chill; Cheng Xi met his pitch-black, indifferent eyes and tilted her head slightly, "That would have to be asked of the Zhenguo Duke's wife; after all, it was she who accused me of intentional injury."
At this point, Cheng Xi's eyes brightened, "Chief, this subject's daughter wishes to file a complaint; does the Tongtian Division accept them?"
Li Zhi'an met Cheng Xi's shining eyes, which seemed like two burning flames, also revealing a hint of cunning.
She had quite the nerve, actually wanting to use him.
"Cheng Xi, this is the Tongtian Division, not a place for you to act recklessly." Hearing this, the Zhenguo Duke's wife felt her knees go weak and hurriedly spoke up to reprimand her.
Jiang Boyu watched as the Chief remained silent, and seeing that Eldest Miss Cheng was truly pitiful—the Zhenguo Duke Mansion was truly despicable, their own son had done such a shameless thing, and yet the Mansion still wanted to sue the young girl—they were truly the worst!
"Eldest Miss Cheng, ordinary complaints should go to regular government offices; the Tongtian Division does not accept such cases," Jiang Boyu kindly pointed out.
Cheng Xi's gaze swept across the Chief's face; it was a pity, seeing how the Zhenguo Duke and his wife feared him so much, if he could take this case, she imagined he would surely be able to grant her justice.
The look of regret on Cheng Xi's face was too obvious; Li Zhi'an pursed his lips, his eyes becoming even more indifferent—she truly did not know the immensity of heaven and earth!
The Zhenguo Duke did not want to stay in the Tongtian Division for a moment longer, and looking at Li Zhi'an, he said, "Chief Li, now that it has been proven that my wife and I did not lie, may we leave now?"
Since the Tongtian Division would not take Cheng Xi's case, it would return to the jurisdiction of Dali Temple, and there would be no reason to detain them.
They had indeed gone to Dali Temple to see Cheng Xi, and it had nothing to do with the Four-Eyed Demon Fox.
Li Zhi'an looked toward Jiang Boyu.
Jiang Boyu immediately stepped forward, bowed, and lowered his voice to reply, "Chief, news has come from the Bi'an side; the Zhenguo Duke and his wife have indeed not had contact with the Four-Eyed Demon Fox, and there is no aura of a Demon Beast on them. However..."
"However what?" Li Zhi'an asked with displeasure.
"The Bi'an says the aura on Eldest Miss Cheng is somewhat strange, and suggests that you test her, my lord."
Strange?
Li Zhi'an frowned slightly.
As soon as Li Zhi'an frowned, the Zhenguo Duke and his wife both became somewhat nervous; what, they still couldn't leave?
Even the Tongtian Division could not be lawless!
Cheng Xi was still wondering why the Tongtian Division would intervene in her affairs with the Zhenguo Duke Mansion; a mere severed arm, no matter what, should not have reached the point of alarming the Tongtian Division.
Just as she was thinking, a fierce wind suddenly struck; Cheng Xi dodged, but a curved blade was pressed against her neck.
The blade's edge was tempered with cold, piercing her skin, and her blood felt as if it were about to freeze.
Cheng Xi tilted her head slightly, "Chief, what is the meaning of this?"
As her neck moved, the thin skin slid across the blade's edge, and beads of blood seeped out one by one.
Li Zhi'an did not slacken in the slightest, looking at Cheng Xi, "I only wish to know if the Four-Eyed Demon Fox is in your hands?"
The Four-Eyed Demon Fox?
Cheng Xi was full of suspicion, then decisively shook her head, "Not here."
The Duchess of the State watched this scene, her eyes suddenly flashing, and she suddenly said: "Cheng Xi, you had best confess honestly. No wonder you were able to sever my son's arm; if there was no outside help, how could a piece of trash like you have done it?"
The more the Duchess of the State thought about it, the more it made sense; she was also just an ordinary woman, and in any case, she absolutely could not sever a person's arm, "Chief of Tongtian, you should arrest her and interrogate her properly; perhaps the Four-Eyed Demon Fox really is in her hands!"
