Chapter 349: The Delighted Chanxi

~17 min read 3,344 words

At six o'clock in the morning.

In the boys' dormitory of Fu Yi High School, Lin Suifeng of Class 8, Grade 1, woke up on time, tidied his bed, washed up, and prepared to leave.

"Class monitor, you're up so early?" a classmate, woken by his noise, opened his eyes and asked.

"Yeah, I'm going for a morning run. Anyone want to join?"

"No no, I'll sleep a bit longer."

Lin Suifeng smiled, didn't press further, and turned to walk out of the dorm.

People out this early were still rare; he occasionally saw other Fu Yi students on the path.

By the time he reached the playground, it was completely empty.

Lin Suifeng placed his backpack beside the flagpole, stretched toward the sun, did a few warm-ups, then began jogging along the track.

After running about two laps, Lin Suifeng suddenly saw four people enter through the playground gate.

All wearing uniforms—one boy and three girls—the boy looked handsome, and the girls were each more beautiful than the last, leaving Lin Suifeng momentarily stunned.

As they drew closer, he stole a glance at their uniform sleeves and noticed the enrollment year—suddenly realizing they were upperclassmen.

Three Gao Er, one Gao San.

Why was the Gao San senior hanging out with three Gao Er students?

Strange.

Lin Suifeng thought this but didn't stop running; he kept jogging slowly, though he couldn't help glancing over occasionally.

Among the four, the three girls were all extremely beautiful, leaving a deep impression on Lin Suifeng.

After observing for several minutes, Lin Suifeng's gaze settled mostly on Yan Zhusheng.

Too bad she's a senior… Lin Suifeng scratched his head; he actually preferred girls slightly younger than him—or at least the same age.

Plus, he didn't know the relationship between that boy and the three girls.

Honestly, Yan Zhusheng—her appearance, everything—really appealed to Lin Suifeng.

Especially when he saw the four of them start running, he could clearly tell that among the three girls, Yan Zhusheng had the most beautiful and most standard running form.

Lin Suifeng really couldn't resist athletic girls.

Originally, he'd planned to run four or five laps and be done, but he ended up following them for several more.

Finally, gasping for breath, he stopped and watched them leave.

Too bad he didn't get to ask which Gao Er class she was in… Lin Suifeng thought, but felt too shy to chase after them.

Still, he was surprised—he'd never expected his very first morning run after the official start of school to turn up a senior who hit his xp so perfectly.

He just didn't know if they came here occasionally or every day.

Lin Suifeng pursed his lips, feeling tempted, but then shook his head and pushed the daydreams away.

…

On the other side, Xu Youyu, who had escaped to rest after just one lap of the morning run and was still panting, draped one arm over Li Luo's shoulder and sighed: "Can we please not do morning runs anymore? I'm dying—my head's even spinning."

"Precisely because of that, you need to exercise more," Li Luo said cheerfully. "You don't want to give up halfway through a national trip someday from exhaustion, do you?"

As it happened, in his past life, Xu Youyu had been an absolute beginner at stamina—climbing a mountain left her exhausted.

She'd taken from eight in the morning until four in the afternoon just to reach the summit of Huangshan—another kind of extraordinary talent, in a way.

"Are you going on a national trip?" Ying Chanxi asked curiously.

"It's just a dream, a dream," Xu Youyu waved her hand. "That's way off—what does it have to do with me now?"

"Exercise properly now, and you'll have the stamina for travel later," Li Luo laughed.

"I don't care," Xu Youyu shook her head violently. "If you ever drag me out for morning runs again, I'll kill you!"

"No," Yan Zhusheng said seriously. "Senior, pick another punishment—you can't kill Li Luo."

"Then chop off his legs so he can't run anymore," Xu Youyu threatened fiercely.

"Don't chop them off—just break them," Ying Chanxi whispered. "Chopping looks ugly."

Li Luo: "... Could you two at least consider the feelings of the person involved when talking like this?"

…

After the morning run and breakfast, Li Luo parted ways with Xu Youyu on the second floor of the cafeteria, watching her comfortably stroll through the open space below the corridor straight toward the Gao San teaching building, and sighed: "It'd be great if there was a bridge connecting Gao Er and Gao San."

"Just build a corridor straight from Class 8 to the cafeteria," Ying Chanxi rolled her eyes.

"That's not impossible."

"You're dreaming."

"Deputy monitor, why do you always contradict the class monitor?" Li Luo frowned, pointing at Ying Chanxi. "During morning self-study, remind the classmates to rearrange their desks and chairs."

"For the next few days are entrance exams—the classroom must be arranged in a 5x8 grid. You know that, right?"

"You handle the exact seating plan—I won't interfere."

Ordered like this, Ying Chanxi immediately recalled last night's defeat by his weird tactics, puffed out her cheeks, still resentful.

She huffed loudly and gritted her teeth: "Fine, Class Monitor my lord, I'll do it right away!"

She stomped her feet twice in irritation. Back in the classroom, seeing Yan Zhusheng and Li Luo return to their seats, Ying Chanxi rolled her eyes and suddenly thought it might be better to let Yan Zhusheng handle the seating arrangement.

Thinking this, when the morning self-study bell rang and all classmates arrived, Ying Chanxi stepped onto the podium and briefly explained the desk rearrangement for the exam setup.

"... So everyone, start self-studying—I'll handle the exact seating."

After saying that, Ying Chanxi stepped down from the podium and went straight to Luo Jiajia's seat, telling her, "Luo Jiajia, starting from you, the three of you move back to behind Li Luo's spot."

As she spoke, Ying Chanxi had already passed by Qiao Xinyan and arrived at Yan Zhusheng's seat, proactively helping her push the desk backward, all the way to the corner at the very back of the classroom.

Then she had Qiao Xinyan and Luo Jiajia slot into the empty spots between Li Luo and Yan Zhusheng.

The first row of eight desks was now arranged.

Then Ying Chanxi repeated the process, arranging all the remaining seats, then clapped her small hands happily and returned to her own seat, turning to glance back: "How's that, Class Monitor my lord? Are you satisfied with my work?"

Li Luo glanced at Ying Chanxi, then turned to look at Yan Zhusheng sitting three seats behind him, and couldn't help laughing and shaking his head: "Hmm, fine."

Meanwhile, Yan Zhusheng had been seated in the corner of the classroom—for the first time ever, so far from Li Luo—and immediately pouted unhappily.

But Ying Chanxi, pleased with how perfectly her arrangement had turned out, turned back around with a faintly smug expression, her lips pressed tight to keep from smiling.

It was rare for her to win once, so no wonder she was so delighted.

Especially when morning self-study ended and the morning exam was about to begin; as one of the top forty students in the entire school, Ying Chanxi could still walk with Li Luo to Class One's classroom.

Although Yan Zhusheng had improved greatly and had consistently ranked within the top 160 in the previous final exam, he could still only take the exam in Class Four, unable to walk alongside Li Luo.

"You look awfully happy," Li Luo said as they entered Class One's classroom, glancing at Ying Chanxi's beaming smile.

"Do I?" Ying Chanxi huffed twice. "I'm always happy. Why do you care so much?"

…

After the morning Chinese exam ended, the group ate lunch together, and Li Luo and Ying Chanxi, as class monitor and vice monitor, went to the student council meeting room for the meeting.

oC〇

This was the first meeting of the new semester.

Lin Suifeng, as class monitor of Class Eight in Gao Yi, naturally came to attend.

After sitting down, when he looked toward the student council president's seat and saw Xu Youyu's face, he froze for a moment.

She looked kind of familiar…

Thinking this, Lin Suifeng suddenly remembered the four people he'd met on the playground that morning.

Wasn't the Gao San senior who collapsed after running one lap and sat down to rest the student council president?

Lin Suifeng blinked, staring at Xu Youyu's serious expression as she sat upright at the head of the table, suddenly feeling as if he'd uncovered her secret side—and oddly, he found Xu Youyu kind of cute.

Huh… Xu xuejie really isn't bad—beautiful, student council president, and beneath that stern face, she's a running novice.

Lin Suifeng swallowed, feeling his heart waver slightly.

But then he remembered the image of the Gao Er senior with the long ponytail from his mind, and immediately expelled all thoughts of Xu Youyu.

At the first student council meeting of the semester, Xu Youyu first skimmed through the collected personnel list, then scanned the room.

When she saw Ying Chanxi and Li Luo, she wasn't surprised; she smiled and nodded to them, and once everyone had arrived, she moved on to today's agenda.

On one hand, she mainly explained to the Gao Yi freshmen the usual schedule and responsibilities of the student council.

On the other hand, she outlined the upcoming tasks.

For example, during the first week of school, after the entrance exams end, the first major event at Fuyi High will be the club recruitment drive.

All Gao San students except club presidents have been assumed to have withdrawn from clubs; the Gao San members of the student council will primarily be responsible for maintaining order at the scene.

Gao Er students, as the main force of the clubs, must handle information collection and scheduling for external recruitment, and coordinate closely with each club.

Gao Yi new members must promote club recruitment within their classes, and also follow the Gao Er upperclassmen to learn how to arrange coordination work and gain experience.

Lin Suifeng and Jiang Liuxian, as class monitor and vice monitor of Class Eight, were naturally assigned to work with Li Luo and Ying Chanxi from Class Eight.

When Xu Youyu asked the Gao Er and Gao Yi pairs to get acquainted, Lin Suifeng looked at Ying Chanxi and thought she looked familiar too…

Wasn't she the other senior from the playground this morning?

And the boy beside her, the class monitor of Class Eight, was the only male who'd run with them during morning exercise.

What a coincidence.

"You're Lin Suifeng, right?" Li Luo glanced at the boy before him, then at the delicate-looking girl beside him. "Jiang Liuxian? That's a pretty ethereal name."

"Thank you for the compliment," Jiang Liuxian murmured shyly, sneaking a glance at Li Luo, then turning to Ying Chanxi, instantly feeling inferior.

Lin Suifeng, however, was startled, looked down at the desk and the papers in his hands, glanced left and right, then couldn't help asking: "Do you know us? I haven't even introduced myself yet."

There were no name tags on the table; Lin Suifeng had only seen Li Luo on the playground that morning and didn't recall ever meeting him before.

"Don't remember?" Li Luo chuckled. "A week ago, when you first enrolled, I was sitting by the notice board on the first floor, telling you which class you were in. We met once then."

"Huh?" Both Lin Suifeng and Jiang Liuxian were stunned.

Back then, Li Luo had just asked them their names and immediately known their class, walking straight to the right classroom—they hadn't paid much attention to what Li Luo looked like.

Yet Li Luo had accurately remembered their faces and names among over six hundred new students—truly impressive.

"Anyway, just a brief introduction," Li Luo said. "I'm Li Luo, she's Ying Chanxi. Names are here. We'll rely on you for the work ahead."

"Of course, it's our duty," Lin Suifeng nodded quickly, glanced at the paper Li Luo handed him, saw their names, and immediately memorized them.

But as he noticed others were still chatting, Lin Suifeng couldn't resist striking up a conversation with Li Luo: "Senior."

"Hmm? What is it?"

"Do you remember—I saw you two this morning on the school playground during morning run?"

"Oh." Li Luo nodded, matching the face to his memory palace. "So it's you."

"Yeah, it's me," Lin Suifeng nodded eagerly. "You were four people—besides you and the senior, the president ran with you too. Was there another person? Is he also in your class?"

"Mm." Li Luo nodded but said nothing extra about Yan Zhusheng.

But upon learning Yan Zhusheng was also in Gao Er Class Eight, Lin Suifeng felt a flicker of delight.

Asking Li Luo directly for the senior's name would've been too blunt—he disliked doing that.

Now that he knew her class, he could pay more attention to her later.

Using the student council as an excuse, he might have to go to the Gao Er building for work—then he could casually drop by Gao Er Class Eight.

Lin Suifeng, already imagining in his mind the scene of meeting the ponytail senior, felt cheerful.

It felt like he'd gained a new reason to look forward to high school.

After the exchange ended, Xu Youyu distributed the club coordination assignments.

Based on the clubs Li Luo and Ying Chanxi themselves belonged to as Gao Er class monitor and vice monitor, they naturally received assignments for the Literature Club and the Rock Club.

"This is easy," Li Luo said with a smile after seeing the assignment.

Next to her, Ying Chanxi also laughed, and Jiang Liuxian, sitting neatly beside them, curiously asked, "Senior, why did Senior Li say he's relaxed?"

"Because the two of us are vice presidents of the Literature Club—our president is sitting right up front," Ying Chanxi chuckled. "Also, Li Luo is a member of the Rock Club, so coordinating between them isn't difficult at all."

"Senior Li is in the Rock Club too?" Jiang Liuxian's eyes lit up at this. "What instrument does he play?"

"He's the guitarist," Ying Chanxi replied with a smile, sounding even more proud talking about Li Luo than Li Luo himself would.

"That's amazing," Jiang Liuxian couldn't help but glow with admiration.

"Don't just talk about me," Li Luo pointed at Ying Chanxi. "This one's the top student in our grade—since freshman year, she's never dropped from first place in any exam."

"Why are you bringing that up?" Ying Chanxi shot him a glare. "There's nothing to brag about."

Watching their interaction, Jiang Liuxian glanced between them and whispered, "Senior Li, Senior Ying, are you two a couple? You two seem so well-matched when you talk."

"No way!" Ying Chanxi's face flushed red as she denied it. "Don't go making things up—I've known him since middle school, that's all."

"Oh, I see," Jiang Liuxian nodded, then her gaze settled on Li Luo's handsome face, and she fell into deep thought.

After the Student Council meeting ended, everyone returned to their respective classes.

But as they went downstairs, Xu Youyu walked up to Li Luo and Ying Chanxi, checked his list, then chuckled: "By the way, you two never mentioned yesterday—how come Xi Xi is your Class 8 vice monitor?"

"It's all because of someone's dirty tricks," Ying Chanxi puffed out her cheeks and let out a loud huff.

"Cough… those were legitimate campaign tactics. You should just accept your loss gracefully," Li Luo chuckled. "What? Do you really think I'd lose the class monitor election to you?"

"Then how else?" Xu Youyu gave him a puzzled look. "Your class has so many boys—how did you even win?"

"Because I asked them a question," Li Luo said simply. "Do you want a beautiful class monitor who only thinks but never lifts a finger—or a beautiful vice monitor who works tirelessly to serve you all?"

Xu Youyu instantly understood his meaning and shook his head, laughing: "You're really devious—did you even come up with a trick like that?"

"Exactly!" Ying Chanxi immediately chimed in. "He's so mean!"

"But then," Xu Youyu turned to Ying Chanxi and couldn't help laughing, "Xi Xi, you might be the first vice monitor in Fuyi High's history to become Student Council president."

"Huh?" Ying Chanxi, suddenly reminded by Xu Youyu, blushed furiously, feeling embarrassed.

But beside her, Li Luo suppressed his laughter and said, "Isn't that great? You're making history."

"It's all your fault!" Ying Chanxi huffed and punched him.

Li Luo didn't even flinch, grinning: "Xi Xi's Student Council president, but she's still my vice monitor—so I'm even more powerful than the president. Does that make me the Student Council's Supreme Emperor?"

"Go die!" Ying Chanxi punched him again. "Don't get too cocky!"

"What's cocky about it? I'm just stating facts," Li Luo said, still grinning after taking the punch.

If I were just the class monitor alone, it wouldn't mean much.

But if the vice monitor is Ying Chanxi, Li Luo suddenly realized, being class monitor actually felt meaningful.

At least he could finally outdo Ying Chanxi at the school level.

Not academically, of course—but it was still satisfying.

Seeing Ying Chanxi pouting, he couldn't resist teasing her more—when her cheeks puffed up in anger, he'd poke her face.

Watching her flustered and powerless against him, Li Luo beamed with delight.

"Oh, by the way," Xu Youyu said as they were about to part, "after the exam this evening, after dinner, we need a Literature Club meeting to plan recruitment."

"Let everyone know today—ask them to gather in the activity room after dinner."

"Once we finalize the promotion plan, we'll need school approval for materials and advertising spots."

"Got it," Li Luo nodded, then turned to Ying Chanxi. "Vice monitor, you handle the notification."

"Dream on!" Ying Chanxi shot him a scowl. "This isn't a class task—we're both vice presidents of the Literature Club, so we both answer to Senior Xu."

"So, Senior Xu," Li Luo asked, "after you step down as president, who will you make the new president?"

"Xi Xi's already overloaded—she's taking the Student Council presidency and joining the competition class," Xu Youyu said. "I'll just hand it over to you."

"See?" Li Luo patted Ying Chanxi's shoulder. "I'm the future president—you better behave now, be obedient and well-mannered, or I'll make your life hell later."

"Get lost!" Ying Chanxi huffed and stomped on his foot. "You're not president yet—come with me and help deliver the notice."

"Miss, you're not playing fair," Li Luo yelped in pain, then clucked his tongue.

Xu Youyu watched the whole scene with amusement, then waved as they parted: "See you this evening."

After waving goodbye to Xu Youyu, Li Luo and Ying Chanxi returned to Class 8.

It was nap time, and their footsteps were quiet, not disturbing the classmates sleeping.

But when Ying Chanxi returned to her seat, she turned—and realized Yan Zhusheng's desk had been moved behind Li Luo's!

And Luo Jiajia, who should have sat behind Li Luo, had been relocated to the far corner.

Probably hearing their footsteps, Yan Zhusheng, who had been napping, lifted her head, saw Li Luo sit down, glanced at Ying Chanxi turning around, and waved at them both in greeting.

Ying Chanxi forced a smile, then turned away in a huff and sulked off to sleep.

As she buried her head, Yan Zhusheng quietly slipped one earbud into Li Luo's hand.

Soon, the gentle melody filled both their ears again.

Only when nap time ended did Ying Chanxi walk over to Yan Zhusheng's desk and feign casualness: "Why did you move here, Zhusheng?"

"I wanted to sit behind Li Luo—it's easier to ask him questions," Yan Zhusheng blinked at Ying Chanxi. "Is that not okay, Xi Xi?"

"Uh… of course it's okay!" Ying Chanxi waved her hands quickly. "I was just asking out of curiosity."
