Chapter 80: The Literature Club

~6 min read 1,195 words

The final results of the class officer election remained unchanged: Li Luo and Hua Xiuxiu were still class monitor and deputy class monitor.

The two sports officers also remained the same.

Shi Yanran, who ranked second in the class in the entrance exam, was elected as the Youth League branch secretary, while Xu Yinghuan secured the position of study officer thanks to her sweet and adorable voice.

Jin Yuting did not run for any position, but during English class, she had already volunteered to serve as the English class representative.

Shao Heqi did not even run this time.

He believed he couldn't compete with Li Luo; since he couldn't become class monitor, he naturally wouldn't try for any other class officer role under Li Luo's leadership.

After the class officer election ended, the first self-study period was over.

Yan Zhusheng looked at his name written on the blackboard, labeled as sports officer, and sighed.

"Why didn't any girls run for sports officer?"

"Why didn't any warriors run for class monitor?" Li Luo also posed a soul-searching question.

Yan Zhusheng glanced at him, dropped the thought, and asked, "Are we going straight to my place after school today?"

"I have to attend the literature club's welcome meeting at noon," Li Luo said. "After that, we'll head to your place together and buy some groceries on the way."

"Alright," Yan Zhusheng thought for a moment. "I'll check out the rock club at noon."

"Is the rock club fun?"

"It's okay," Yan Zhusheng gave a serious evaluation. "Not very professional, but everything else is fine."

"They're just Gao Zhongsheng—don't expect too much," Li Luo said, then suddenly asked curiously, "If you joined the rock club, what position would you take? Keyboardist? Guitarist? Or lead vocalist?"

"I can do any of them," Yan Zhusheng said. "I can play drums too—it depends on the arrangement."

"Sounds pretty interesting."

"Then why didn't you join before?"

"Mainly because it's too much trouble…"

The rock club had very few members.

After all, at a school like Fu Yi High, most students were top performers who focused more on grades than other activities.

Activities like a band, with their high barriers to entry, could deter many just by the threshold alone.

Moreover, most students learned piano; guitars, basses, and drummers were painfully rare.

Plus, every year, Gao San students quit the club, so the actual band members were only Gao Er and Gao Yi students.

Thus, the rock club was one of the few small clubs on campus, consistently maintaining fewer than ten members.

It was already a win if they could gather one person per position to practice songs.

"You can come check it out whenever you get interested," Yan Zhusheng said. "Sometimes we're short on people—you can drop in as a guest."

"That could work."

Soon, the bell for the second self-study period rang.

Li Luo began doing his homework, occasionally picking up his scratch paper to chat with Yan Zhusheng.

The morning passed quickly.

At noon, Li Luo called for Yan Zhusheng, waited for Ying Chanxi to come downstairs, and then headed to the cafeteria together.

They met up with Xu Youyu on the way, and the four of them had lunch at the cafeteria, then agreed to meet at the school gate afterward.

Afterwards, Yan Zhusheng went to the rock club, while Li Luo and the other two headed toward the literature club's classroom.

The club president, Duan Qintian, had already finished eating and arrived early, instructing the Gao Er members to set up the room simply.

By around twelve-thirty, most members had arrived.

Li Luo sat with Ying Chanxi in a corner, idly spinning the ballpoint pen in his hand.

After a series of simple self-introductions, President Duan Qintian explained the literature club's rules and requirements, then moved into the pen pal interaction segment.

This was the system Xu Youyu had mentioned to him earlier: members could correspond with each other via letters.

Provided both parties agreed.

Duan Qintian took a stack of envelopes from Qin Yawei and placed them on the podium, smiling. "Now, everyone can try writing a letter, put it in an envelope, and hand it to a pen pal here you'd like to get to know."

"The recipient can choose to reply or not reply within the next few days."

"And in the letter, indicate whether they wish to become your pen pal and continue correspondence."

"We've prepared plenty of envelopes today—you can write multiple letters."

Ying Chanxi had never heard of this before; when Xu Youyu mentioned pen pals to Li Luo, she had been in the bathroom showering.

Now her eyes sparkled as she turned to Li Luo: "This sounds kind of fun?"

"Who are you writing to?" Li Luo took the letter paper handed out by Duan Qintian, spun his pen, and asked with a smile.

Ying Chanxi rolled her eyes and huffed, "I'm writing to a senior."

"Oh," Li Luo nodded and began writing. "I'm writing to a senior too."

Ying Chanxi: "?"

Frustrated, Ying Chanxi secretly stepped on Li Luo's foot under the desk.

Li Luo looked at her blankly. "Are you serious? Why are you stepping on me?"

"I'll step if I want to—what are you gonna do about it?" Ying Chanxi pouted, lowered her head, and started writing, ignoring him.

Soon, the classroom was filled only with the rustling of pens on paper.

Li Luo wrote two letters, went to the podium to collect two envelopes, sealed them, then leaned back in his chair and glanced around the room.

Among them, Hua Xiuxiu and Lin Yuan sat in another corner, writing earnestly.

Of the other club members, besides Xu Youyu and the other three officers, Li Luo didn't know anyone.

He'd only memorized their names during the self-introductions.

Few students from the key class joined the literature club—they'd all chosen competition-focused clubs instead.

Most people who join a competition club would also pick a hobby club, and certainly wouldn't go to the literature club just to hang around like Ying Chanxi.

"Sigh…" Li Luo placed two envelopes on the table and sighed helplessly, "If it weren't for promising Senior, I'd be running circles on the basketball court right now."

"You think it's a hardship to come with me?" Ying Chanxi had just finished writing one letter and was working on the second; hearing him, she turned sharply and glared at him.

"You're writing two letters?" Li Luo glanced over and asked, "One for Senior— who's the other one for?"

"Definitely not for you," Ying Chanxi huffed, then asked, "Aren't you writing two too? One for Senior— who's the other one for?"

"For you."

"Huh? Oh… right… so that's how it is…" The moment Li Luo said this, he threw off Ying Chanxi's rhythm.

She had assumed Li Luo would copy her and say, "Definitely not for you."

She hadn't expected Li Luo to come straight out with it— his words left Ying Chanxi stammering, suddenly as if she couldn't speak, her heart pounding wildly, feeling strangely unsettled.

"Fine, you're wise," Ying Chanxi muttered under her breath, returning to her letter, though her head now dipped lower than before.
