Chapter 70: Declaring Ambition
San Mao and I ran all the way home. Even now, I hadn't quite recovered. I couldn't believe Wang Li had died just like that. How was I supposed to investigate the previous events now? I lay on the bed with a headache.
"It's fine, don't think about it. That guy Wang Li offended many people; it might not be what you think," San Mao comforted me from the side.
"But isn't this too coincidental? He was just about to speak when he was shot dead. It's most likely related to that Su Xueyan incident. I really don't know what to do now. The other party's strength is truly too terrifying, and I have no background or strength. How can I fight them!"
"I know, but everything is unclear right now, it's all just your speculation. Of course, as your brother, I also hope you give up on investigating. Because it's indeed quite dangerous for you. But if you do, Su Xueyan died in vain. I don't want you to live in endless guilt. Think about it yourself!"
After San Mao finished speaking, he left.
I lay on the bed, staring at the ceiling, my heart in chaos. Not long after, my phone rang. I looked at the caller ID and saw it was Su Xueya.
"What's wrong? What's the matter?"
"Can't I call you if there's nothing wrong? Are you really prepared to just eat and run and not care about anything?"
"No, that's not what I meant!"
"Come out, I'm downstairs at your place!"
I quickly climbed out of bed, poked my head out the window, and saw that Su Xueya had indeed arrived.
I went downstairs and saw Su Xueya. Su Xueya smiled at me for a rare moment: "I want to have a drink, can you accompany me?"
I nodded. I was annoyed to death right now and just happened to want to drink too. We bought some alcohol, and Su Xueya brought me to the riverside.
I looked at the riverside in front of me, a bit surprised. This was exactly where I had drunk with Su Xueyan back then. I still remembered Su Xueyan getting drunk and acting crazy, pinning me down and wanting to kiss me. That look was truly adorable.
Su Xueya sat on the ground and then turned to look at me: "Sit down, what are you standing there for!"
Seeing me sit down, Su Xueya said to me: "Do you know? My sister drank with you right here and didn't go back all night. When she went home the next day, my mom was furious and wanted to hit my sister. But my sister wasn't afraid and even talked back to Mom. That was the first time my sister talked back to Mom. My sister was beaten half to death, but when she went back to her room to sleep, her face was still filled with a shy and happy expression!"
Hearing this, I fell silent. Xueyan was truly wonderful, her kindness making me feel ashamed of myself at the time, so I never dared to respond to her directly.
"Come, bottoms up!" Su Xueya handed me a can of opened beer and then clinked glasses with me.
I drank it all in one go with bitterness. After Su Xueya finished drinking, her face was flushed red as she said to me: "Do you know what my sister liked most about you back then?"
I looked at Su Xueya, puzzled.
"My sister liked the sense of justice and courage you had most. For a girl you hadn't really interacted with, you could risk your life to help her. My sister said she had never had that kind of courage because it's hard for people like us at the bottom of society to overcome cowardice and humbleness. Yet, you overcame this fear and cowardice for my sister, so my sister liked you very much!"
I knew Su Xueya most likely knew about today's events. It was probably San Mao who asked her to come and persuade me, since she came not long after San Mao left.
"I know about Wang Li's matter. I know what you're worried about. If it were me, I definitely wouldn't investigate further either, because compared to those things, being alive is the most important. I believe that no matter what choice you make, my sister would support you!"
Su Xueya picked up a can of beer, handed it to me, and watched me: "I will support you too!"
I picked up the beer, drank a few mouthfuls, and then said to Su Xueya: "Thank you, I think I understand what to do!"
Su Xueya didn't speak, but sat obediently beside me, her body leaning slightly against mine. I drank a lot that night, drinking until I was completely unconscious.
When I woke up, I found Su Xueya lying beside me. I only felt that I had sweated a lot, and my head was still dizzy. Seeing me wake up, she slowly got up, took a wet wipe from her body, and helped me wipe the sweat from my forehead. I subconsciously dodged, but immediately reacted. Just as I was about to say something, Su Xueya acted as if nothing had happened and came over again to wipe the sweat from my forehead. My face turned red, and I lowered my head, not daring to speak.
Seeing my reaction, Su Xueya said: "You haven't dated before, have you?"
I shook my head awkwardly: "I hadn't had time to express my feelings to your sister before!"
Hearing my words, Su Xueya put down the wet wipe and didn't speak. At this moment, I also felt I was stupid. Why did I suddenly mention Su Xueyan? This made both of us very awkward.
"Um, let's go back quickly, your mom will probably be complaining again!"
"It's fine, she already called and complained while you were sleeping!"
"Uh, she didn't say anything, did she?"
"It's fine, she just scolded me a few times and scolded you once along the way!"
My expression was awkward. This mother-in-law must be furious, with two daughters staying out all night twice, and both times with the same boy. I looked at the time; it was already one or two in the morning. Su Xueya and I quickly packed up, and then I sent Su Xueya home.
However, Su Xueya and I didn't expect that Zhang Fengnan hadn't gone to sleep yet. Seeing us return, she felt relieved, and then stared at me fixedly, making my hair stand on end.
"I'm sorry, Auntie, I drank too much today. Su Xueya stayed to take care of me, that's why we came back so late!" I quickly apologized to Zhang Fengnan.
"Hmm? There won't be a next time!" Zhang Fengnan didn't fly into a rage but simply gave me a reminder.
I nodded quickly, promising it wouldn't happen again.
"What? Why are you still standing there? Do you want to sleep at my house?" Zhang Fengnan looked at me, her expression displeased.
I was so scared I quickly said: "Leaving now, leaving now!"
On the way home, I smoked the whole way. Through my chat with Su Xueya today, I confirmed the idea in my heart. Since I had chosen to walk this path, no matter how difficult it would be in the future, I had to walk it. It was just that now Wang Li was dead, and the only one who knew the situation was Zhang Longtao. Zhang Longtao was not easy to deal with; he was the boss of the whole street, had many people under him, and that was not even counting his father's influence. I decided to go see Zhang Longtao tomorrow and talk to him. Of course, I didn't hold any hope that he would tell me anything; I just simply wanted to go and probe the reality and the situation. ===== CHAPTER 71 =====
