Chapter 142: Another New Merit Added to the Resume!

~8 min read 1,418 words

Tang Ye strode into the Interrogation Room; Chu Kun had a shaved head and was wearing a prison uniform, possessing none of his former luster.

Tang Ye tossed a cigarette to Chu Kun.

The corners of Chu Kun's mouth curled up, and he sneered as he clamped the cigarette in his mouth.

Tang Ye walked forward and lit the cigarette for him.

"Although this is our second time meeting, I am very well-informed about your situation. The things you've done are backed by ironclad evidence, it's a done deal, so don't harbor any delusions. It would be better to cooperate with our work straightforwardly and confess everything in detail; you might end up serving a few years less in prison."

Chu Kun took a few deep drags of the cigarette and said, "I really didn't expect that after all these years of roaming, braving the wind and rain, and seeing all kinds of people, I'd never once flipped my car, only to end up falling into your hands. I'm just curious, when did you discover I had a problem?"

Tang Ye didn't hide anything and said directly, "You incited Hong Yu, wanting to drag me into the water too, so I kept my guard up and started to be vigilant! Later, I collected some information and reported it to the County Party Committee!"

Chu Kun's eyes instantly turned bloodshot, as if he wanted to eat someone, and he asked viciously, "The person who sent the anonymous letter to the County Party Committee office was you?"

Tang Ye nodded and admitted it generously, "That's right. You reacted fast enough, planting eyes inside our ranks; the moment you sensed danger, you decisively cut ties and pulled out—it exceeded my expectations!"

Chu Kun gasped, then asked, "Was Guo Liang arranged by you to get into my place?"

Tang Ye shook his head, "Guo Liang... he really wasn't arranged by me. I also didn't expect Guo Liang would go undercover on his own and burrow into your gang. However, I had other backup plans. Even if Guo Liang hadn't revealed the address of your lair to us at the highway exit, I had already figured out your situation well enough."

Chu Kun was completely stunned.

He had never imagined that Tang Ye still had an ace up his sleeve.

"Come, let me introduce you to a friend!" Tang Ye said, walking outside the Interrogation Room and leading in a man.

"This is Tan Feng, a reporter from the Southern Weekly! Reporter Tan received a tip a year ago and has been quietly investigating your whereabouts. I only got in touch with him last week; otherwise, how could I have let you scam so many people in Pinghu!"

Chu Kun no longer had his previous calm and composure.

He had always thought that it was Guo Liang who ruined his good deed, but he hadn't expected that he had long since fallen into a net cast by others.

Tan Feng took out a fountain pen and said to Chu Kun, "Chu Kun, I've been watching you for a long time. You are indeed smart; every time you succeeded, you wiped away the traces completely. If Town Mayor Tang hadn't provided me with key clues, I really wouldn't have been able to link you to those other fraud cases. I want to ask you a few questions, can you answer them?"

Chu Kun retorted, "Why should I answer you?"

Tang Ye looked at the no-longer-calm Chu Kun and continued to provoke him, "Chu Kun, just tell Reporter Tan about your affairs. He is one of the best reporters in the country. If this story of yours is told, it can let many people know how terrifying fraud gangs are, and it can also keep more people from falling into the traps you set."

Chu Kun laughed out loud, "You overestimate my moral standards; I'm not that noble."

Tang Ye shook his head and changed his tone, "You aren't that kind of thorough villain, either. You anonymously donate money every year to the orphanage where you grew up. If the Dean of the orphanage knew you had become a criminal now, how heartbroken she would be. She has always treated you like her own son; if she knew that the money donated was ill-gotten... if the outside world knew that the orphanage was associated with a fraud ringleader..."

Chu Kun's face turned deathly pale in a flash.

Tang Ye saw his reaction and understood immediately.

This arrow had struck his vital point.

After struggling with himself for a while, Chu Kun finally relented.

"Fine, I'll cooperate with the investigation and also with Reporter Tan's interview.

But, I hope you won't involve the orphanage in this.

The Dean is a good person! Those orphans are innocent."

Tan Feng hurriedly promised, "Don't worry, when I write the article, I will use a pseudonym and won't expose the fact that you were once an orphan."

Seeing Chu Kun agree to the interview, Tang Ye secretly breathed a sigh of relief.

Chu Kun usually spent money like water, but fortunately, the arrest was timely, and the funds of the victims in Pinghu had not yet been squandered by them.

However, the victims in other places were miserable; it was probably unlikely they would get all their losses back.

But having something is better than having nothing; if you commit a wrong, you must pay the price—everyone understands this principle.

Before long, Tan Feng came out of the Interrogation Room and said with a relaxed face, "Town Mayor Tang, I really have to thank you. Before, when I contacted other townships, good heavens, they were strictly guarding against me; not only did they not help me understand the case, they even tried every way to trip me up."

Hearing this, Tang Ye laughed and teased, "Pinghu is different from other places. We have sharp eyes for capital; when auditing qualifications, we are very strict. If any scammers want to fish in troubled waters, we can spot them at a glance—they can't hide at all."

Tan Feng nodded in deep agreement, took the initiative to hand his business card to Tang Ye, and said, "After the draft is written, I will send it to you immediately."

Tang Ye smiled and replied, "I will be sure to read it carefully then."

At this moment, Wan Ming strode over, his face full of smiles as he said to the two, "Let's go, let's go have lunch together and have a good chat."

"Director Wan, look at how happy you are—are you treating us?" Tang Ye teased with a smile.

Wan Ming waved his hand and said generously, "That's a must, I must thank you two properly!"

Wan Ming had achieved another great merit, and it was a case of national concern, with the amount involved exceeding one hundred million.

The case was valued even more by provincial and city leaders than the human trafficking gang case from a short while ago.

More importantly, Tan Feng was going to write an in-depth report.

With the influence of the Southern Weekly, once the report was published, a brand-new entry would be added to Wan Ming's resume!

After finishing lunch, Tang Ye and Tan Feng found a bathhouse and soaked in a bath.

By the time they returned to Pinghu, it was already six o'clock in the evening.

Parking the car at the Government Compound, he saw a woman standing not far away, wearing a trench coat and looking around.

As soon as that woman saw Tang Ye, her eyes lit up immediately, as if she had seen a savior, and she trotted toward Tang Ye.

"Sister Yu, is something the matter? There's no need to wait here; you could have given me a call," Tang Ye asked.

Hong Yu smiled a bit embarrassedly and said, "Sister wants to ask you for a favor!"

Tang Ye's eyes darted around, and he immediately understood what Hong Yu wanted to do, "Let's go, I'll go with you to find Brother Song!"

Hong Yu didn't expect Tang Ye to guess her thoughts so quickly, and her eyes instantly turned red...

"I really have no other way! He doesn't answer my calls, and I'm afraid of affecting his work if I go to his unit. The money has already been recovered. Why is he still unwilling to forgive me?"

"I have a way!"

Tang Ye was just thinking about finding an opportunity to have a good talk with Song Jin.
