Chapter 132: Kairben's Black Staff

~6 min read 1,159 words

Standing before the Black Staff Tower, Naimi Xisi felt extremely insecure.

Because he had entered Deepwater City, he had lost the option to revert to dragon form.

Deepwater City harbors an inexplicable, powerful force that targets beings in True Dragon form; Naimi Xisi could sense that if he changed back to his original shape, he would immediately suffer a tremendously powerful spell attack.

He also asked Gonde about this, and Gonde had exactly the same feeling.

"That's the Dragon-Preventing Barrier set up by Sir Ya Gai Lun back then—Ya Gai Lun's Dragon-Preventing Barrier. Didn't you know?" Xia Nai asked with a strange expression.

"The Dragon-Preventing Barrier will instantly suppress any True Dragon in dragon form within the barrier, causing nausea, vomiting, and fainting. I thought you knew, which is why you turned human and came with me."

Upon learning this, Gonde became extremely irritable; unlike Naimi Xisi, whose power mostly relies on his dragon breath and body, his strength in human form is very weak, comparable only to a level‑7 Sorcerer. Thus, under these conditions, entering a Legendary Mage's residence gave both dragons a sense of tension.

"No need to worry," Xia Nai smiled, "Mr. Kairben may appear stern in rumors, but he's actually a very good‑natured person. He won't get angry unless you blaspheme the Magic Goddess in front of his nose."

Shrugging his shoulders, Naimi Xisi stepped through the gate of the Black Staff Tower.

Behind the gate guarded by six knights lay an extremely spacious hall, apparently covering at least about 1,500 square meters.

The Black Staff Tower is almost the tallest structure in all of Deepwater City; based on the floor height, Naimi Xisi estimated it has at least twelve levels! Inside the hall, many apprentices in mage robes bustled about. Most of them are noble youths from Deepwater City; after testing reveals decent magical talent, their families spend large sums to send them to the Black Staff Tower for training.

Of course, these apprentices do not study directly under Kairben Heizhang.

Besides Kairben himself, the Black Staff Tower also hosts several mentors—his children and former disciples.

Currently, they are being received by a black female mage named Jiafa La Saifar.

"Welcome, honored guests from the Masked Mage Society. Mr. Black Staff has been waiting for you on the top floor for a long time."

Jiafa La Saifar smiled and summoned a translucent, green‑glowing humanoid energy construct.

"Black Staff Tower spirit, please lead them to the teleportation array."

The construct obeyed, walked toward a small alcove on the left side of the hall, and the three entered, passing through a teleportation gate in the alcove to reach the top floor of the Black Staff Tower.

A spacious reception hall.

Unlike most mage towers that turn the summit into an Arcane Garden, Kairben has lavishly arranged this as a private reception hall.

By the fireplace at the center of the hall, on a soft genuine‑leather sofa, a man facing away from them sat, holding a glass of red wine.

"You've arrived, Miss Xia Nai of the Masked Mage Society, and Mr. Naimi Xisi."

The man turned his head; he wore a black outfit with a silver button, a cloak lined with gray fur, was tall and muscular, sported a full beard, and had silver stripes in his black hair.

"Mr. Kairben," Xia Nai said with a smile.

Naimi Xisi was surprised that this Archmage knew his name. Juan Ce Long seemed smug; perhaps his White Mystery title was finally going to echo across the continent?

Perhaps having seen through his thoughts, Kairben gave a faint smile and said, "Archbishop Losite of the Church of Knowledge has already greeted me. She asked me to look after you on the New Continent; she's very worried about you." Naimi Xisi understood—it was because of the Church of Knowledge. But having a Legendary Mage watch over oneself… the powerful church's prestige is enough.

Kairben snapped his fingers, and the door swung open quickly.

An elderly man with white hair and beard, dressed in a mage robe, entered. Though advanced in age, he walked with vigor, his green eyes bright.

"So this is the little girl who took me to Anmu, right?" the elder stroked his beard and smiled gently.

"Uh," Xia Nai said, bewildered, "I was told to escort your son Saifar Aoluo Sang to Anmu, Mr. Kairben. If he isn't your direct descendant, the Grand General might not let us pass."

"He is indeed my son," the old man said helplessly, shaking his head.

Even Gonde's eyes twitched; what kind of family is this? The robust middle‑aged man is the father, the old man the son? "Ha ha, kid, don't be surprised; you're not the first to be curious." the old man said with a mischievous glint, like an old prankster.

"My father is a chosen of the Magic Goddess; his life has been fixed—immortal, unlike me, a frail old man with a trace of elf blood who's lived nearly 300 years; staying like this is already good."

The old man shook his head, sighing in an old‑fashioned tone, making Kairben laugh as well.

Then he seemed to recall something, a hint of worry crossing his eyes as he asked Saifar, "How is she?"

"Father, mother is still the same; this trip to the New Continent, I'm afraid I won't be able to look after her."

"Don't worry, I've already decided to step down from the Masked Lord's position. From now on, I'll hand over the affairs of Deepwater City, as appropriate, entirely to Dagete Wujin. I'll take good care of her."

Saifar nodded anxiously, which surprised Naimi Xisi and the others.

Kairben's wife is also renowned across the continent, very famous.

Because his wife is likewise a chosen of the Magic Goddess, a Legendary Mage—Laila Yinshou.

But Laila Yinshou disappeared two hundred years ago; rumors say she died on another plane. According to Kairben's current account, she may not be dead yet, just trapped in a bad state.

Kairben then let Naimi Xisi and the others leave first, and gave Saifar some instructions.

A few minutes later, Saifar emerged from the door.

"Let's go. Our mission on the New Continent will be quite heavy," Saifar said with a smile.

"Oh, right, my father just told me—when you reach the New Continent, if you encounter any difficulty, feel free to find me."

"As for the people of the Anmu Empire, you'd better not get too involved. I know the Grand General fairly well; he despises True Dragons, and the Anmu Empire has the highest number of Dragon Slayers on the continent."

Naimi Xisi frowned; this was unexpected.

"But you needn't fear them," Saifar stroked his beard and smiled kindly, "After all, I'm also a Nine Ring Mage. I'm familiar with the Golden Legion's second‑in‑command, the Moving Gate—Baolisi. As long as you don't cause major effects on the colonial troops, they won't dare do anything to you."
