Chapter 183: Terrifying Mana
A yellow tide broke through the city walls, and in its wake, tens of thousands of bulbous monsters spread through the city like a virus.
Outside the city, several massive leader monsters were slowly walking into the walls; in their huge eyes, crimson Mana beams periodically coalesced, sweeping into the city like swords. Countless Nikesalan people struck by the beams underwent horrific mutations—either their bodies became covered with eyes, or an arm sprouted from their abdomen.
Saifaar watched the monsters ravaging the ground, a flash of compassion in his eyes. His power was far from enough to contend with these beasts; even if he exhausted his Spell Slots, it would be but a drop in the bucket.
But he could not stand by idly.
"lagreenalfisty"
The old Mage clenched his staff with both hands, his eyes shimmering with a pale green light. He muttered an ancient incantation, and as his voice fell, a dark‑green orb gathered at the staff's tip, its contained power tightening the surrounding air.
As the wizard swung, the dark‑green orb transformed into an immensely thick green beam, twisting and leaping as if alive, accompanied by a deafening roar that shot straight into the heavens. The beam's outer wall flowed like molten gem, radiating a dazzling brilliance—a beauty that seized the soul.
Nine Spell Circle Evocation spell — 【Kairben's Spirit Flame】!
The ground appeared dim under the green light. Where the beam passed, the air seemed torn, and the howling wind and intense vibration made Di Luo Na Ou's heart race with fear.
The green beam struck a bulbous monster leader. In an instant, green flames erupted like a wild beast tide, scorching tongues dancing and devouring everything nearby. The sturdy shell warped under the heat, and the green fire, as if alive, chased every flammable thing.
The surrounding monsters let out shrieks, but they gradually faded in the horrific explosion, erased by the merciless spirit power. The green flames leapt in the air, spreading through the monster horde like an apocalyptic disaster.
The massive bulbous monster leader fell with a howl, and alongside it thousands of smaller monsters collapsed. The green flame tide continued to spread; the remaining surviving bulbous leaders, seeing this, let out angry roars, and crimson twisted Mana shot straight into the sky.
Nine Spell Circle Psychic Ability — 【Reverse Reality】!
The remaining five monster leaders combined their casting; the twisted ability instantly altered reality, causing the green flames to retract as if time were reversing. Each time the flames receded, monsters that should have been utterly consumed rose again in place.
Until the flames finally reconvened at their origin, the power of 【Reverse Reality】 was exhausted.
It could not revive the powerful monster leaders.
Saifaar, watching from the sky, felt both shocked and delighted. He was shocked because the monsters' strange power far exceeded his expectations; he did not understand Mana well, but the scene before him seemed achievable only by the Nine Spell Circle spell 【Wish Technique】!
He was pleased because the power clearly did not surpass the Nine Spell Circle tier; at least the strongest monster leader was not revived!
"Nine Spell Circle level casting power," Saifaar immediately concluded.
At some point, the sky was shrouded in dark clouds, and a torrential downpour washed the blood‑stained brick streets, while the monster leaders hurled crimson Mana into the heavens; the rain, amplified by the Mana, grew threefold.
"Kill, kill, kill, kill!"
The ordinary people on the streets, under the influence of the bizarre rain, gradually acquired wild, ferocious gazes. They seemed possessed by demons, their reason replaced by madness.
A burly man, who had been merely fleeing the monsters, suddenly seemed provoked and threw a fierce punch at a bewildered passerby beside him.
The passerby, caught off guard, was slammed to the ground, but quickly rose, fury blazing in his eyes, roaring toward the burly man. They grappled, fists striking flesh with dull thuds.
The rain warped their wills; facing the oncoming monster tide, the Nikesalan citizens in the city lost sanity and began attacking each other.
"How could the mind be twisted on such a massive scale!" Saifaar exclaimed, his eyes filled with disbelief.
This strange rain was just like what was encountered in the rainforest; the ordinary people affected by it slaughtered each other like the animals.
Could these monsters be responsible for this?
The rain affected at least tens of thousands of beings, let alone the millions of animals in the rainforest.
Such an exaggerated range was far beyond what Nine Spell Circle Psychic Ability could achieve; Saifaar instantly realized the monsters' power was off. The gap between Nine Spell Circle casting power and Legendary was astronomical; even the widest‑range Evocation spell could only affect at most a few thousand level.
Even a Nine Spell Circle spell of this tier required sacrificing damage.
Legendary spells, however, represent a cliff‑edge leap, with damage ranges of tens of thousands, even hundreds of thousands—terror akin to nuclear weapons—powers only Legendary spells can wield.
As a Nine Spell Circle Mage whose father is a renowned powerful Legendary Mage, Saifaar possessed an exceptionally broad perspective on spells. He knew these monsters were far from Legendary; otherwise, he would have no chance to slay even one, likely being instantly killed by their Legendary abilities upon contact.
In other words, the problem lies in that oddly colored Mana!
Although his knowledge of Mana was limited, Saifaar knew its external manifestation was an invisible, silvery, transparent energy.
But the Mana wielded by these monsters was crimson, and each approach to it evoked a twisted, maddening sensation.
"I say, old Mage, I think you'd be better off not getting involved; these monsters give me a very dangerous feeling." Even Di Luo Na Ou, watching everything, swallowed hard and said with a tremor.
Saifaar sighed, "I know, I just can't bear it. These monsters are cruel; if they breach the city, there won't be a single survivor left."
He cast a complex glance toward the city's pyramid, puzzled, "Why, why do the strong Nikesalan not step forward to stop this?"
!
Inside Naska City, blood now flowed like a river; the bodies of Nikesalan lay on the ground, eyes wide with rage, and atop each corpse's skull, several bulbous monsters gorged themselves.
Yet the pyramid at the city's center remained silent.
Just as Saifaar was about to summon the Red Dragon, a blue portal flickered beside them, and a silver‑haired man in a black Mage robe, wielding a white staff, stepped out.
"Naimi Xisi?!" Saifaar and Xia Nai exclaimed with surprise.
Naimi Xisi nodded, gazed intently at the city for a moment, then curled his lips in a smile:
"I see, no wonder they set that thing up inside the city—what a bunch of lunatics."
Saifaar was puzzled, but Naimi Xisi gave no explanation; instead, he raised his staff toward the ground, and torrents of magic surged out like a great river.
"If you want them, I'll destroy them!"
The power of a Nine Spell Circle spell is that of a normal Mage's casting, not the protagonist's. The protagonist's current Six Spell Circle spell range is already absurdly high.
Before Legendary spells, each Spell Circle's range did not increase dramatically; a Six Spell Circle death formation could kill nearly a thousand, while a Nine Spell Circle could affect at most several thousand.
Only the damage of each Spell Circle spell rose noticeably.
Plainly put, before Legendary spells the AOE increase was minimal, with only damage rising significantly; once Legendary spells began, both AOE range and damage surged greatly.
However, special spells like Banshee's Wail or single‑target spells have higher power tiers but very small ranges, which will be discussed later.
