Chapter 71: Descent

~6 min read 1,083 words

Losri En doesn't know whether Charis really killed Mende Rosa, but he knows how to say it to catch everyone's attention.

His words left people staring in amazement, even though Mende Rosa's reputation had already plummeted after the disastrous battle armor three years ago. Yet the public became even more fascinated by this ethically‑defying patricide.

"You... what on earth are you saying!" Charis blazed with anger, a flash of panic flickering in his eyes.

Losri En precisely caught that hint of panic, and a doubt rose in his mind—could he have actually guessed correctly?

He gave a vague glance toward the six‑mage group behind him—Naimi Xisi was not among them—and slipped into the castle, hoping to find evidence to subdue Charis; if none existed, he would compel some cleaning servants to lie.

He only needed to drag the master here.

Losri En, confident, demanded, "What nonsense am I spouting? You know full well that the 【Silent Mage Association】 already has solid proof that you killed Count Rosa!"

Finishing, he turned to the crowd, raised his hands and said, "Citizens of Degeng City, I am Losri En, chief of the 【Silent Mage Association】. Our Divination mages have, through mysterious arts, confirmed Charis's sins! Tell me, what should we do with this evil patricide?"

Behind him, an enchantress mage whispered incantations, each mind‑controlling spell washing the emotions from the heads of a dozen or so citizens.

They raised their fists and shouted angrily, "Seize Charis! Let the Noble God's Church judge his crimes! We cannot let this shameless scoundrel rule us!"

Some trouble‑making citizens joined the uproar, their clamor stirring the bewildered crowd, and everyone began to believe that the Charis before them was indeed a perpetrator of unforgivable crimes.

Losri En curled his lip, turned leisurely toward Charis and said, "Did you hear, Charis? This is the will of Degeng's citizens."

"Surrender and be taken; I will deliver you to the Noble God's cathedral, where a priest will judge your sins."

Charis did not become angry at those words; he simply lowered his head in silence, and after a moment his whole body began to tremble.

"Hehehehahaha!"

He lifted his head, a wild grin on his lips, his eyes full of mockery.

"How splendid, you elfin brat. Tell me, how did you discover I killed that old Mende fellow? I recall I handled it quite cleanly," Charis asked with a manic grin.

The criminal confessed, and the crowd gasped in shock at Charis's admission—this was actually true!

But Losri En was not pleased; instead, his expression quickly turned serious.

Charis's reaction surprised him; the other party not only offered no denial but openly admitted it.

His brazen demeanor led Losri En to swiftly assess the danger he now posed.

What is it? The Red‑Robe Mage? Possibly; the other side has already partnered with the Red‑Robe Mage, so protection is expected.

Yet it is not yet the moment for a desperate last stand; why lay all cards now? Does he think a Red‑Robe Mage can defy the Noble God's Church and the power of the Yinbu Tu royal house to rule Degeng City? Suddenly, a strange voice sounded at his ear, ethereal yet grand, echoing in every corner of Degeng City.

"Dong dong."

"Dong dong."

"Dong dong."

Charis, hearing the sound, gazed at the night sky in rapture, "Ah, it finally begins. Come, come, Bottomless Abyss, I welcome your grandeur here! Let chaos fill Degeng City tonight, hahahaha!"

In the next instant, a scarlet pillar of light shot skyward from the ground beneath the crowd, a massive wave of evil mana stinking the air; citizens engulfed by the red column dissolved in agony within it. The pillar surged into the clouds, crimson dyeing the entire sky, even the moon turning blood‑red.

A gigantic pentagram sigil appeared in the sky, countless profane Abyssal chants entwining it, continuously siphoning the power conveyed by the crimson pillar.

"Damn—it's the power of the Abyss! He's opening an Abyssal portal!" Losri En shouted in alarm.

He turned back at Charis, roaring furiously, "You idiot! What have you done?! Do you even know what exists in the Abyss?! How dare you summon the Abyss with the Sai Er!"

Charis gave a bizarre grin, "What's in the Abyss? Of course I know—chaos, evil, and demons."

Losri En sank onto the ground, staring at the sky in despair.

"The Bottomless Abyss of the Infinite Plane," a place of endless, suffocating terror.

There, the environment is extremely harsh and life is exceedingly perilous.

There, morality is absent and unending slaughter reigns.

There, there is no friendship, kinship, or love—only betrayal, killing, and destructive evil.

Its infinite space gathers countless terrifying demons, embodying ultimate destruction, mercilessly invading the Prime Material Plane and slaying any creature they encounter.

It is the most terrifying plane among twenty‑five universes, pure chaos and evil.

Normally, Abyssal demons cannot reach the Prime Material Plane, but massive blood‑sacrificial rites by cultists can briefly open an Abyssal portal.

Projections of the demon army will pour through the portal into the world, voraciously devouring flesh and looting souls.

The current situation clearly matches.

Losri En never even dreamed that the Red‑Robe Mage would dare such a deed; aren't they afraid neighboring nations will unite against them?

Know that the Red‑Robe Mage is not a clandestine cult like the Dragon‑Worship Sect; they are semi‑rehabilitated official rulers! What benefit do they gain from this? Losri En racked his brain but found no answer; he could only stare hopelessly at the center of the sky's pentagram, where a tiny black hole was gradually forming.

Then the black hole kept expanding, a massive evil will projecting from the dark depths; ash drifted like goose‑feather snow, and a square red barrier enveloped all of Degeng City.

"Phase One," Losri En muttered to himself blankly.

He had once read in ancient texts about the form of Abyssal portals; this terrifying conduit of Abyssal power has three stages.

In Phase One, the portal casts an unbreakable barrier, completely covering the sacrificial area; no non‑divine power can breach it.

In Phase Two, the portal evolves into a primary stage, and low‑rank demons sprout from behind the gate like bamboo shoots after rain, guarding its safety.

In Phase Three, the portal matures, its scale allowing a demon lord's projection to reach the Prime Material interface and persist for three days.

When the portal reaches maturity, it signifies absolute annihilation, for even a Legendary demon lord's power cannot match it.
