Chapter 174: What to Do When the Catch Is Too Much?

~8 min read 1,474 words

After the water had been mostly pumped out, Wu An moved the water pump to the fourth pit; less than a minute after placing it, his Luck Value dropped a little.

There's hope.

Wu An silently praised, let the water pump run, put on his full-body fishing pants, and also went down into the third pit.

Upon going down, he felt something under his foot that was still struggling.

He bent over, grabbed it, took a closer look, and found he had picked up a sole fish; it was indeed a fish, which they around here call a sole fish.

It's a type of flatfish, scientific name dragon sole.

The price is not bad, should sell for about fifty per catty; worth mentioning is that some unscrupulous vendors in the market pass off basa fish as dragon sole.

He had been taken in before.

"Brother, there are a lot of fish."

"Good thing you didn't listen to me; if we had left, we would have suffered a huge loss."

"Look, what a big flower crab."

"My lobster isn't small either, it's about a little over one catty."

A Qing and Mai Hangyu showed off the seafood they had caught in their hands.

Wu An smiled and nodded, glanced at the bucket beside them—he had gone down a little earlier and already caught about half a bucket.

There really is a lot of seafood in this pit.

Although they were all fairly ordinary seafood, the sheer quantity meant that in a short while Wu An had filled a bucket with fish, shrimp, crab, octopus, caught two cuttlefish, and accidentally got sprayed all over with ink; luckily, wearing the full-body fishing pants saved him.

The catch was mainly fish.

Black bream and yellow bream were the most abundant; yellow bream, also known as yellow leg, is a kind Wu An particularly likes to eat, whether steamed or pan-fried, it suits his taste.

Sea bass were also plentiful; they were everywhere around here.

After working for over half an hour, the three had searched the edges of the pit, turning over every stone big and small; when they came out of the pit, they quickly sorted the catch, separating fish from shrimp and crab, packed them into several snake-skin bags, and tossed the bags into the water to soak.

A Qing quickly took out a cigarette, smoked one, and also gave one to Mai Hangyu.

Mai Hangyu puffed on his cigarette and said contentedly, "The catch feels great."

After saying that, he glanced sideways at the few people making sarcastic remarks.

"Hey, good-looking guys, your luck isn't bad."

"Now we can make a small profit."

"Really, we've stepped in dog shit luck."

These people stopped making sarcastic remarks and turned to backhanded comments.

That's normal.

Besides having no personal connection, these people are just here to watch the fun; seeing that they haven't made money, they naturally want to mock them a bit.

Seeing them make money, they naturally feel envy and jealousy; it would be strange if they could say anything nice.

Wu An paid no attention.

He noticed that two-thirds of the water in the fourth pit had been pumped out, and the boosted Luck Value had been exhausted, so he quickly added more Luck Value.

When the water in the pit was drained, signs of pumping were spread across the entire bottom.

Wu An was quite pleased.

His luck was good.

Aside from the first two pits being mediocre, the later pits he randomly chose were all not bad.

So far, he had already consumed 20 points of Luck Value.

He still had 15 points left.

With about two and a half hours left until high tide, if nothing unexpected happens, he could exhaust his Luck Value completely.

He estimated that he could easily earn twenty or thirty thousand.

As he was spacing out, he heard A Qing shout, "Brother, I'm going down first."

"Hangyu, hurry up."

Mai Hangyu wiped the sweat from his forehead, responded, and followed him down.

Wu An then tossed the water pump into the fifth pit, couldn't be bothered to check the situation, picked up his bucket, and walked into the fourth pit.

Ahead, there was a small pit where water was being drawn; the water was a bit turbid, making it hard to see what kind of fish it was, but judging by the size it wasn't small, so she reached in directly to grab.

She grabbed it in one handful.

Then she lifted it up to look; it was entirely reddish, with a slight protrusion, looking ugly, like a big chunk of Stone Nine Public.

Upon closer inspection, it wasn't Stone Nine Public, but a tiger fish!

His hand trembled, and he quickly threw the fish into the bucket.

"Damn, scared the hell out of me." Wu An exclaimed in fright, took off his glove, saw nothing was wrong, then breathed a sigh of relief: "Good thing I was wearing gloves."

Seeing Wu An toss a tiger fish, A Qing laughed and said, "Brother, you're still fierce—catching tiger fish with your bare hands."

Mai Hangyu caught one, handed it to A Qing, and asked, "Is this a tiger fish?"

"Not Stone Nine Public?"

A Qing was so frightened he plopped down in the pit, shouting, "Keep your distance—this thing's spines will mess you up."

"You also hurry up and throw it away."

Mai Hangyu tossed the fish into the bucket.

Wu An asked, "Is your hand okay?"

Mai Hangyu shook his head: "No, no, I feel nothing; if it stabbed you, it could kill you from pain."

Wu An walked two steps forward, moved a stone, saw two tiger fish underneath, and said, "These tiger fish are gathered together."

Mai Hangyu also shouted, "Brother, I also found a tiger fish."

This is a poison pit!

A Qing said, "I'll go up and get the tongs and scoop net."

After speaking, he leapt sideways to the pit's edge and ran to the roadside motorbike. Having the scoop net and tongs, Wu An and Mai Hangyu then dared to keep catching.

Besides the tiger fish, they also found a sea catfish, which somewhat resembles the angler fish; it's also poisonous, not lethal but able to cause excruciating pain.

Although poisonous, it's much cheaper than the tiger fish.

"A Qing, you were right—this is a poison pit. Look, what is this?" Wu An shouted, holding up the scoop net. A Qing stared intently and shouted, "Golden Drum!"

"I've found one too." Mai Hangyu also lifted up an unattractive-looking fish and said, "It's a mud fish, and not small either."

Good fellows.

Such toxic fish, normally found offshore, have all turned up in this little pool.

What's up?

What about this fight?

Or are you trying to raise gu?

Fortunately they were prepared today; otherwise, if they'd rushed into the pool like last time, they'd already be sitting in the hospital getting IV drips.

Several people on the shore sighed repeatedly.

The onlookers were really anxious and angry.

How can these three greenhorns have such good luck!

None of them got hit!

After Wu An and the others crawled out of the fourth pool, the fifth pool had already been drained. Wu An glanced and saw his luck value drop by five points.

There weren't many fish in the pool, but the quality was good; they caught several groupers, and together with the miscellaneous fish and shrimp crabs they filled a bucket.

They then drained three more pools, with average yields; under the envious, jealous gazes of a few idlers, they caught a sack of seafood.

Luck value exhausted, Wu An stopped running the water pump.

Mai Hangyu asked, "Brother, we're not catching anymore?"

Wu An nodded: "No more."

The tide's coming in too.

Let's hurry and finish up this pool.

Later we still have to sell the fish, wash up, and who knows when we'll be done.

Mai Hangyu shouted happily, "Yeet! Finally we're not catching—if we kept going I'd probably drop dead from exhaustion."

Those few idlers staring wistfully muttered to themselves.

They leaned to the north.

What does that mean?

If they could make money like that, I'd be willing to drop dead from exhaustion.

After Wu An and the others finished their work, the sky had already darkened; looking around, those few idlers had already left at some point.

Mai Hangyu still felt a bit regretful: "Why did they leave without saying goodbye?"

"They're not stupid; they're just waiting for you to show off."

Alright.

Let's also hurry up and pack up while the fish are still alive so we can get a good price.

"Exactly, hurry up."

The three hurriedly worked, but loading the vehicle still took some time.

The motorbike tricycle was still too small.

Sometimes, too big a catch can be quite a headache.
